Textbook: Transport Phenomena by Bird, Stewart, Lightfoot; 2nd Revised
Edition, 2007
Objective: To develop the ability to (i) analyze chemical-engineering fluids
problems (ii) formulate the problems in mathematical terms (iii) solve
the equations with appropriate methods, and (iv) understand the
physical meaning and the limitation of the solutions.

Homework policy:
1. Homework assignments are due at the beginning of the class on Fridays. If the homework is not
turned in within ten minutes following the start of class (at which time the TA will collect homework
papers), the homework will be considered late. Only one late homework will be allowed during the
semester, provided that the paper is turned in to Prof. Hsieh by 12:00 PM on the day that the
homework is due.
2. We do encourage discussion of class material between students. Note, however, homework
should represent ONLY your work. You may collaborate with other students only when
conceptualizing the problem and outlining the solution strategy. You should NEVER copy
homework solutions from other students.
3. The homework assignments must follow the guidelines given below:
• Use only standard A4 paper and only write on one side of the paper.
• Write neatly and legibly. Please clearly mark your final answers (for example, box them)
to avoid any ambiguity.
• Use a software package (or ruler and graph paper) when making sketches and graphs
• Write your name on all pages and number all pages.
• Staple all pages together.

Regrade Requests:
Requests for regrades on homework (to TA) or exams (to instructor) must be made no later than
three days following the distribution of the graded article.

Excused Absences:
If you are unable to complete an assignment by its due date because of illness and request an
extension, you must provide a signed doctor’s note that states that the illness prevented you from
completing the assignment. If you miss an examination because of an illness, you must provide a
signed doctor’s note that states the illness prevented you from taking the examination at its scheduled
time.

Reminder for Ph.D. pre-candidate and any one who might persude the Ph.D. degree in our
department:
If your final score is in the top 60% of both this class and the class of ”Advanced heat and mass
transfer” (offered next semester), you can avoid taking “Transport phenomena” in future Ph.D.
Quilify exam.
