most of us have been model citizens in said communities.”
Ejiofor agrees with ANAC’s view.

After EMTs Watch
Pregnant Woman Die
Two emergency medical
technicians (EMTs) who
watched a pregnant New
York woman suffer a seizure
and then die have been put
on restricted duty and cannot
provide patient care, according
to blackvoices.com.
Eutisha Reeve Rennix, 25,
was working at an Au Bon
Pain restaurant in Brooklyn
when she began to experience
shortness of breath, stomach
pains, and later seizures. Two
EMTs, Jason Green, 32, and
Melissa Jackson, 32, were also
in the crowded restaurant at
the time, but told patrons they
were on break and to call 911.
According to the
blackvoices.com report,
people called out, “She’s
turning blue. She’s pregnant.”
Another witness allegedly
said, “I remember them saying
they couldn’t do anything
because they were on their
break.”
However, Rennix had died
by the time the ambulance
arrived.

In an interview with

Department of Fire has not
offered an explanation or
apology for their employee’s
actions.
“We’ve heard nothing from
the city. No one has called
to apologize or explain. Her
[3-year-old] son, Jahleel,
senses what is going on,”

interview. “He keeps asking,
‘Where’s Mommy?’”

East. “What’s so clear is that
this country, from the outset,
is projecting the interests of
wealth and property.”
The blog noted that
Glover is among a growing
contingency of African-
American leaders who have
begun expressing, both
publicly and privately, varying
degrees of disappointment
over a president for whom
they held high hopes.
Obama responded that
his efforts at health care
reform have been just one
example of his compassion
toward Black America.
“So this notion, somehow,
that because there wasn’t a
transformation overnight,
that we’ve been neglectful
is just simply, factually not
accurate,” Obama said during

Reed, founder and chairman
of the Black wing of the state
Democratic Party.
Southern politics expert
Ferrel Guillory told The
Associated Press there is a
“generational cleavage” in the
emergence of younger Black
leaders such as President
Barack Obama and Davis,
who were not old enough to
participate in the civil rights
era.
As the younger generation
rises, leaders of that
movement wish to retain their
influence, Guillory suggested.
Davis, 42, first saw
opposition from Reed and
Arrington in 2002 when
he earned support from
Whites to claim victory in a
congressional race over an
incumbent Black politician
who was active in the civil
rights struggle. He was again
a target in 2008 when Davis
served as Obama’s Alabama
campaign chairman while
many Black leaders were still
supporting Hillary Clinton.
“There is a group of
insiders in this state who
benefit from protecting the
status quo,” Davis told the AP.

unsuitable for the governor’s
seat because Reed claimed
he failed to help constituents
in his majority Black, low-
income district.

a result of the physical abuse
her White co-worker inflicted.

continue to do the shopping

said Washington. “I have
other bills that I have to pay
and I look forward to paying
with the money I work hard

Another former employee,
Kandis Arzu-Thompson, said
the situation was painfully
familiar.
“Last year I had another
job and I was laid off in
December and for this to
happen again it was just kind
of surreal for me,” she said.
“Especially since I worked
that night until 12-12:30 and
got an e-mail at 1:27 a.m.”
The Sideline had its share
of problems this year. In
March, a Bowie man was
shot and killed as he left the
restaurant. And, under the
appearance of the restaurant’s
smooth day-to-day operations,
money troubles were brewing
as three months later, it filed
for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
The June 9, 2009, filing set
off a legal struggle which is
still raging today. According
to court documents, The
Sideline’s total debt is close
to $1.5 million, with creditors
ranging from the companies
contracted to renovate
the restaurant to utility
companies such as Pepco and
Washington Gas.
The restaurant’s legal fight
seemed to have culminated
in a Nov. 24 notice that a
hearing would be held Jan.
5, 2010, to surrender the
property. That hearing has
since been canceled as the
property has been turned over
to the property managers.
On Dec. 18, the restaurant
entered an application to
employ Yorke, Burke & Lee,
an accounting firm based
in Gaithersburg, Md., for
the purpose of generating
the numbers related to its
bankruptcy filing. Five days
later, the doors of Sideline
were abruptly closed,
shocking everyone involved,
including creditors. Inland
Management, the property
management company for
the Capital Centre, where the
eatery was located, didn’t
expect the sudden close, but
were very realistic about the
environment in which the
restaurant was operating.
“We worked diligently
with The Sideline to try to
continue operations there,”
said Bill Parks, vice president
of Inland U.S. Management.
“Unfortunately, the economic
climate really affected him
[Arrington] and some of
the other big box tenants as
well— Linens ‘N Things and
Circuit City—and he was
unable to continue operations
and filed bankruptcy.”
Jessica Ashton, a former
patron, said there were
no obvious signs that the
restaurant would be closing
“anytime soon,” as there
were events held regularly. “I
just celebrated my birthday
there on a Friday night in
November and things seemed
to be going good based on
the large number of people
that were there that night,”
said the 27-year-old Landover
resident.
Former employee Shaneka
Green said that the day before
the closing, Levin e-mailed
a work schedule to the staff,
further promoting the false
image that things were
under control. “They were
making money and there was
a lot going on and even the
radio station (WPGC 95.5)
was there. I was under the
assumption that everything
was going well,” said Green.
Employees were able to
receive partial payment on
Dec. 29, money owed from
previous pay periods. They
were told to expect to receive
all of the money they’re due
by this week. However, the
employees are skeptical of
whether or not they’ll receive
anything.
“Our issue now is that
we’ve been told that we
should no longer try to
correspond with the former
general manager but to
address all concerns to the
bankruptcy attorney, Bernie
(Bernard) Brooks,” Arzu-
Thompson said. “He’s
requesting that we send him
our information based on
how much we’re supposed
to be getting paid on this
check, which means we
have to give him our hours
and our total tips from sales.
That can only be done by a
handful of people because not
everyone kept those records;
management kept those
records.”
Neither Arrington, nor
Brooks, his representation,
have responded to phone
calls or e-mails from
the AFRO regarding the
matter. Arrington, a former
Washington Redskin, is still
popular in the District and
hosts “The LaVar Arrington
Show” on 106.7 The Fan, a
local sports talk radio station.
But Arrington’s former
employees say while he may
be moving on with his life,
they still need a measure of
closure.
“He didn’t say anything
to us about us closing; he
didn’t have a meeting,” said
Washington. “He basically
said ‘the heck with us.’ We’re
the ones who work hard up
until the wee hours of the
morning. We worked hard at
his restaurant to keep it
open.”

authorities the full story
behind his decision to store
four pistols in his locker room
and his intentions on Dec. 21.
“As I have said before, I
had kept the four unloaded
handguns in my house in
Virginia, but then moved
them over to my locker at the
Verizon Center to keep them
away from my young kids,”
Arenas stated. “I brought
them without any ammunition
into the District of Columbia,
mistakenly believing that
the recent change in the DC
gun laws allowed a person
to store unloaded guns in the
District.”
But that wasn’t the only
mistake Arenas would make
as he went on to admit that he
took the unloaded guns out in
a misguided effort to play a
joke on his teammate, Javaris
Crittenton.
Arenas didn’t share the
exact details of how the
incident played out, but he did
state that he never threatened
or assaulted anyone with the
guns and never pointed them
at anyone.
“Joke or not, I now
recognize that what I did was
a mistake and was wrong.
I should not have brought
the guns to DC in the first
place,” Arenas continued. “I
now realize that there’s no
such thing as joking around
when it comes to guns even if
unloaded.”
Crittenton, 22, didn’t take
the prank lightly, according to
multiple news reports.
Unnamed sources told
ESPN.com that a heated
argument between the two
players escalated during a
card game on the Wizards’
flight back home from a
game played at Phoenix
on Dec. 19. According to
unnamed sources quoted by
the Washington Post, the
argument led to Crittenton
allegedly saying he would
shoot Arenas in his surgically
repaired knee, which fast-
forwarded to Gil playing
a bad joke the next day by
sitting three pistols on a
locker room chair, inviting
Crittenton to pick one.
Crittenton then allegedly
tossed one of the guns on the
floor out of anger, claiming he
had his own.
The Wizards said Arenas
will not be available to speak
on the allegations beyond the
statement he already released
to the media, and Crittenton’s
agent, Mark Bartelstein, told
the media his client’s name
would eventually be cleared.
Arenas used the rest of his
statement to apologize for his
foolish actions.
“I am very sorry for the
effect that my serious lapse in
judgment has had on my team,
my teammates, the National
Basketball Association and
its fans,” he stated. “I want to
apologize to everybody for
letting them down with my
conduct, and I promise to do
better in the future.”
But Arenas’ future could
face punishment administered
by both the NBA and the
federal authorities.
NBA.com reported that
league commissioner David
Stern will more than likely
wait to see if police charges
are filed before he administers
his own penalties, although
he could act now since Arenas
has already admitted to
breaching the league’s code of
conduct.
Federal authorities said
they aren’t releasing any
information now because
the case is still pending
but according to the Post,
law enforcement sources,
who spoke on condition of
anonymity, said prosecutors
presented evidence of the case
to a Superior Court grand jury
on Jan. 5 and an indictment
could come within a week.
Arenas can possibly face
a felony charge of carrying
a handgun without a license,
which carries a five-year
maximum prison sentence.
He admitted to investigators
that he had four firearms,
so he could face five years
for each. He could also face
a misdemeanor charge for
possessing an unregistered
firearm, which carries a
maximum 12-month sentence.

Recession Keeps District’s Black Residents Rooted Close By

Despite the slow economy, when it comes to relocation,
the nation’s capital remains among top cities for which people
clamor for residency.
“From 2008 through 2009, the District had a fairly high
migration rate of about 11 per 1,000 [persons],” said Carl Haub,
a demographer for the Washington, D.C.-based Population
Reference Bureau, “and most of that – about 80 percent [of
newcomers] – was domestic from the 50 states.”
Overall, the District’s population currently hovers at a little
over 591,800 residents, compared to 572,059 residents 10 years
ago and 606,900 a decade before that, according to the Census
Bureau.
On the other hand, while the District ranks No. 5 for cities
with increased populations since the recession began in 2007, it
has seen a dip in African-American residents.
In fact, in a city where tradition has dictated an
overwhelming African-American presence, just 54.4 percent
of the District’s residents were African American last year
compared to 60 percent a decade ago, according to the Census
Bureau.
“Really, I was surprised to learn recently that the
District’s African-American population is 54 percent,” Ward 1
Councilman Jim Graham told the AFRO. “I found that startling
because I never imagined it to be so low [as] I’d been saying
throughout this decade that the African-American population
had been around 68 percent. So if the new [percentage] is
accurate, then that shows a very precipitous decline.”
There has been some decline, Haub agreed, but not as
dramatic as some would think.
“It’s a fact that Washington’s African-American population
has been slowly declining, with people moving on to the
suburbs,” Haub said. “But it has not been a very dramatic
process. In the year 2000, the Black population in Washington
was about 349,000 and fell to 322,000 in July 2008.”

to find financing to buy new homes, buyers for their existing
homes or new jobs in more desirable areas.
Michael Hicks, director of the Center for Business and
Economic Research at Ball State University in Indiana, said he
didn’t have data on migration to the District from other states,
but that in light of the recession, the city’s African-American
residents in particular, aren’t as freely able to pick up and move
far away in search of new beginnings.
“I think that’s part of the problem [maintaining and
obtaining affordable housing among African-American
residents]” he said, “because this recession has hit
disproportionately the working class which includes middle-
aged and older men.”
According to Hicks, they’re the ones that were employed in
sectors like transportation and construction that have been hit
hardest by the recession.

Torian Election to Va. Legislature Bucks GOP Advances

Last November while the GOP was basking in their sweep
of Virginia’s top elected offices, the Democrats were able to
find a silver lining with the election of Luke E. Torian, 51, to
the Virginia House of Delegates in Northern Virginia’s 52nd
district. The Rev. Torian garnered 52 percent of the votes
against his GOP opponent Rafael Lopez in this contest to fill
the seat left open when Jeff Frederick became the state’s GOP
Party chairman.
When the Legislature convenes Jan. 13, the pastor of First
Mount Zion Baptist Church in Dumfries, Va., said he is anxious
to get to work on priorities that include a $1.35 billion deficit
that has to be addressed, funding transportation, new job
creation projects, education and health care. These are issues
raised by voters during nine months of primary and general
campaign travels.

been involved deeply in the Woodbridge/Dumfries community
for more than 14 years, building a new facility to support

Happy New Decade
(NNPA) - As we say goodbye to 2009, one thing is clear:
The first 10 years of the 21st century have been as tumultuous
and noteworthy as any in American history. During the past
decade, we’ve experienced an almost equal mix of tragedy
and triumph. But as the National Urban League prepares to
celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2010, I share the belief of
millions that America’s best days are yet to come. 
The decade began with a presidential election in which the
man with the most votes lost, and the horror of 9-11, when
nearly 3,000 people died in the worst terrorist attack ever on
American soil. 
The decade ends with the first African American in the
Marc H. Morial Oval Office, the first Latina on the Supreme Court and the
nation in the grips of a great recession even as Congress nears
a final vote on historic health care reform.  And while the goal of “Peace on Earth” remains as
elusive as ever, we are ending a major war in Iraq, setting the stage for the return of our troops
from Afghanistan and celebrating Barack Obama’s 2009 Nobel Peace Prize. 
If Sept. 11, 2001 will be remembered as the day of terror in America, Aug. 29, 2005, will
forever be known as the day of Katrina. More than 1,800 people in the Gulf Coast and my
hometown of New Orleans lost their lives in the storm, hundreds of thousands were displaced
and property damage exceeded more than $100 billion. But while the levees failed, the spirit
of New Orleans remains unbroken. The city is rebuilding and with any luck, in a few weeks,
you will see our New Orleans Saints in the Super Bowl.
The past decade also included a number of breakthrough achievements by African
Americans and women.  The election of Barack Obama in 2008 tops the list, but there have
been other notable “firsts.”  In the business world, Dick Parsons, Ken Chenault and Stan
O’Neal became the first African-American chairmen and CEOs of Time Warner, American
Express and Merrill Lynch, respectively.  And in May of this year, Ursula Burns became the
first African-American woman CEO of a Fortune 500 company when she took over the reins
at Xerox.

Wish List for 2010 and Beyond

my new decade’s wish list. I
hope:
PRESIDENT OBAMA
stops gutting his domestic
programs in an effort
to appease Republicans
who have no intention of
supporting him on anything.
GOP leaders are lower than a
snake’s belly and it is useless
to try to satisfy them or their
No.1 ally, Joe-the-Traitor
Lieberman. President Obama
correctly states that he is the
president of all of the people.
And that includes African
Americans. We’re not asking
Hoping for Change: U.S. Policy Toward Colombia

to the topic of violence
against Afro-descendants in
Colombia. Unfortunately,
violence, intimidation and
injustice continue to dominate
conversations about our
brothers and sisters of African
descent in Colombia, who
conservatively make up
26 percent of the national
population. Recent months
have seen a marked increase

For 17 years, Hrabowski
has led UMBC. He is one of
the few African-American
presidents of a predominantly
White university, but
him to be a Black president,
just a president who realizes
the needs of Blacks should be
targeted just as he targeted the
needs of Wall Street, banks
and the automotive industry.
DEMOCRATS

THE
CONGRESSIONAL
BLACK CAUCUS follows
through on its threat to
oppose major bills that do
not improve the plight of the
masses. After threatening to
vote against the health care
bill if it did not include the
public option, members of the
CBC are poised to support
a bill likely to emerge from
in violence and threats against
Afro-Colombians throughout
the country, particularly in
coastal communities where
high concentrations of Afro-
Colombians reside.
Multiple conditions have
created an environment for
such heightened pressures
against Afro-descendants
in Colombia. The pending
U.S.-Colombia Free
Trade Agreement (FTA)
has led to the preemptive
displacement of thousands
of Afro-Colombians. It
is estimated that between
1995 and 2005, 65 percent
of Afro-Colombians living
in supposedly protected
ancestral homelands were
forced to flee their lands.
This exodus has been the
result of armed conflict and
corporate development.
Such displacement has only
exacerbated the marginal
existence many people
already were facing.
In September, the State

these parts anything we didn’t
already know. I’ve been saying
for at least the past several
years that UMBC, not UMCP,
is Maryland’s flagship public

need a Black president. He’s nice to have; we just don’t need the guy.”

Here’s what Time
magazine wrote:

REPUBLICANS revert
to the big tent philosophy
that characterized the party
before it became captive
of right-wing zealots. At
its best, the GOP embraced
liberal New York City Mayor
John Lindsay, progressive
Sens. Lowell Weicker of
Connecticut and Edward
Brooke of Massachusetts
along with conservative GOP
lawmakers. It also embraced
former Assistant Secretary
of Labor Art Fletcher and
Transportation Secretary
Bill Coleman, two ardent
supporters of affirmative
action. It now appears that
in order for any African
American to be accepted by
the GOP leadership, he or
she must be a vocal critic of
affirmative action. Contrary

affirming that improvements
have been made by
Colombia’s armed services.
The certification meant the
Colombian government
and armed services were
“meeting statutory criteria
related to human rights and
paramilitary groups.” Such a
certification demonstrates the
important position the country
plays in U.S. foreign policy
priorities in Latin America.
The State Department views
Colombia as key to securing
U.S. interests in the region.
This certification, part of
the foreign aid bill, allows
the U.S. to provide military
aid to the Columbian army.
Despite continued violence,
and spikes in intimidation
and attacks against Afro-
descendant and Indigenous
communities, the State
Department claimed that the
“Colombian government has
made significant efforts to
underrepresented – that he
fears the university will be
forever typed as a hard-
discipline powerhouse at
the expense of everything
else ... UMBC is one of the
nation’s leading sources of
African-American Ph.D.s in
science and engineering, and
almost half of its seniors go
immediately to grad school.”
I visited Hrabowski in
his UMBC office recently to
talk about the Time magazine
honor.
“My accomplishment
has as much to do with my
students and faculty as with
myself,” he said with typical
humility. “We have a team
of people here who lead the
institution.”
During our interview,
Hrabowski would pace his
office, pointing to photos
of Black UMBC alumni of
whom he was especially
proud. There was the young

to GOP assertions, Blacks
are not in love with the
Democratic Party. Rather,
Republicans who routinely
oppose programs that benefit
people of color offer no viable
alternative.
CIVIL RIGHTS
LEADERS return to being
outsiders instead of insiders.
Many of our leaders have
become shills for the Obama
administration. Instead of
presenting the usual “Black
Agenda,” their top agenda
item these days seem to be
getting an invitation to some
White House event. And
when they don’t get invited,
they profess to be personally
offended. Jesse Jackson, for
example, recently whined
about not getting invited to
a White House conference
on jobs. In the eyes of many
Blacks, Jackson rendered
himself irrelevant when
he threatened to cut off
certain body parts of the
president-to-be. For Blacks
already suffering from “Jesse
Fatigue,” that was the last
straw. And no one should
blame Obama for not wanting
Jesse Jackson around to rain
on his parade or, even worse,
neuter him.

Reports from Afro-
Colombian civil society
organizations paint a very
different picture. Advocacy
and organizing by Afro-
descendant communities
have always been met
with resistance across the
Colombian political spectrum,
but in recent months violent
opposition has only increased.
A recent United Nations
report noted that while the
Colombian government has
made some progress, “a
climate of fear pervades the
country’s judicial system due
to attacks and threats against
the judiciary, victims and
witnesses.” Colombia continues
to have some of the highest
impunity rates among countries
where human rights violations
are seldom prosecuted.
Access to a fair and speedy
trial is also problematic

former UMBC star basketball
player and math major, who
now works for Constellation
Energy, with his quote that
Hrabowski simply adores:
“I’ve always loved math and
making money.”
That’s not a quote
typically heard from a Black
student. But UMBC’s Black
students break the mold.
There are as many Black male
students on its campus as
Black females; Black students
have the highest graduation
rate of any group on campus,
and Hrabowski said it’s not
unusual to visit a hard-science
class and discover that a
Black student has the highest
score on an exam.
As Hrabowski was
recounting all this, that’s when
HEADS OF BLACK
PROFESSIONAL
ORGANIZATIONS finally
assume the leadership role
in their area of expertise.
We expect too much from
our civil rights organizations
and too little from our
professional organizations.
The National Bar Association
should lead the way on
criminal justice matters. The
National Medical Association
should present our collective
position on health care
and racial disparities. The
National Association of
Black Journalists should lead
the charge against racism
in the media. The Urban
Financial Services Coalition
should provide the last
word in our community on
financial literary. Of course,
this would necessarily lead
to the emergence of some
fresh, new voices. And that
would be a good thing for our
community.
THE JOSHUA
GENERATION – the young
leaders-in-waiting – should
find another name. I can
understand their wanting to
put some distance between
them and the various icons
who poses as the Moses of
for Afro-descendant and
Indigenous persons who are
often held for long periods
without any trial or charges
brought. Institutional factors
including socio-economic
conditions, coupled with
massive displacement from
constitutionally protected
lands, make Afro-descendants
particularly at risk for unfair
jailing.
Such threats have not
been the only recent attacks
against Afro-Colombian
communities. Conversations
spurred by the COP-15
Copenhagen global climate
summit shed light on the
increasing deterioration of
Colombia’s coastline and
the links between worsening
environmental degradation
and the security situation.
Acute weather events,
including a massive flood
in Tumaco, Colombia, in
February 2009 left about
30,000 people homeless. In
addition to existing threats

suspect will most of Obama’s

mathematicians and scientists.

we just don’t need the guy.
Now, before some readers
– you know who you are – go
off on one of your “there goes

again” rants, let me point out
that I have some interesting

Neither Jesse Jackson nor
Julian Bond rose to leadership
by waiting their turn. In fact,
if you had studied history, you
would have known that they
fought for their place at the
civil rights table. And if you
are the leader you proclaim
to be, you will not wait for
their permission to assert your
talents.

I’ve proposed, I am sure we
will indeed have a happy New
Year and prosperous decade.

The Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Command presented the 2009
U.S. Army Soldier Show produced by the Army Entertainment Division, “For the Soldier,
By the Soldier.” Starring the talented soldiers of the United States Army, the event was
held at the Warner Theater in Northwest, Washington, D.C. This year’s show paid tribute
to the Noncommissioned Officers (NCO), the backbone of the Army since the Army Senior
Leadership made 2009 “The Year of the NCO.”
The Army Soldier Show is a highly integrated, high-energy, cabaret-style ensemble
production offering a wide range of popular music with colorful set designs, costumes
and props coupled with cast members that represent the military’s
diversity. The 15 cast members, six crew members and
17-member production team traveled to more than
60 locations in America and the Republic of Korea
before culminating with their final performance in
Washington, D.C., before senior Army members
and civilian personnel .
After the show, audience members
greeted the talented soldiers and
congratulated them for a job well done.

DVD Examines Effort to Reach

Troubled NYC Teens via Rap

Chris ‘Kazi’ Rolle was born in the Bahamas where he was abandoned soon after birth by his
mother, who decided to start over on her own and set out for America. Understandably, Kazi grew
up with a hole in his soul and headed for New York City at age 14 to track her down.
But their reunion was to be short-lived and at 15, the unwanted orphan was kicked out of the
house and ended up having to survive by his wits on the hard streets of Brooklyn. He temporarily
joined a gang and turned to a life of crime until he hooked up with a program called Art Start.
This self-help group enables troubled teens to channel their frustrations positively by giving them
a chance to express their emotions through the rhymes associated rap. The organization even has
a recording studio to attract aspiring hip-hop artists, though with the goal of getting them to write
about the real issues affecting their souls, not ghetto fabulous gangsta’ fantasies about guns, bling
and Black-on-Black crime.
The upshot is that, with the help of Art Start, Kazi was not only able to heal himself and
become a productive member of society, but he then started serving as a mentor to at-risk kids

in need of help. This spiritual transformation is the subject of The Hip Hop Project, a warts-and-
all documentary which pulls no punches about the prospects of those stuck in poverty while
simultaneously making a powerful statement about human potential.
Despite their considerable disadvantages, the triumphant participants in the program prove that,
as Kazi claims, “The criminal mind is a creative mind.” For they manage to channel their negative
experiences constructively by collaborating on a meaningful CD containing insightful personal
narratives which touch on a variety of universal themes. As the closing credits roll, postscripts
updating the current status of all the folks we’ve gotten to know leave you with a sense of
satisfaction.

23-year-old multi-instrumentalist blends elements of West Africa’s
djembe drum, oral storytelling traditions, the ukelele and pop into a
mash up of infectious ear candy music lovers of all ages can enjoy.
For Bacon, creating cross-cultural music is not only a passion,
it’s a continuous learning experience.
“I refer to myself as a progressive hip-hop artist. I utilize
traditional elements such as the human Beat-box and the messages
conveyed through rapping/rhyming. The progressive aspects of
my work comes from the use of slightly untraditional methods,”
Bacon told the AFRO. “Instead of sampling records from the genre
of music, bhangra, for example, I will study the genre, apply music
theory and analysis, and implement it in a personal and creative
interpretation. Or, I will just collaborate with an expert musician in
that style. I prefer this method.”
Bacon’s own expertise has made him a sought-after talent in the
District and abroad. He’s been featured at the National Cathedral,
sold out concerts at the Mansion at Strathmore and was the first hip-
hop artist featured at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival.
But it was his collaboration with Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer,
popular folk music artists, that landed the Southeast, D.C., native his
first Grammy nod for Banjo to Beatbox.
AFRO: What message do you hope your
readers will take away after reading the book?
KW: What I want readers to take away
from Pulling it from the Roots is hope and that
we do not have to be held back by our past.
That we have been given everything we need
to overcome any and all situations and we
need to learn how to love all of ourselves not
just the parts that we want others to see.  Also,

Quest for the Super Bowl Starts Saturday

After a long season, the
NFL playoffs are set to begin
on Jan. 9. While the top two
seeds in both the AFC and
NFC will be home resting this
week, teams ready to begin
Wild Card play enter the
postseason hotter than some
of the league’s higher seeds.
The Minnesota Vikings
and New Orleans Saints
earned first-round byes after
both teams combined to go
25-9 on the season but both
squads ended the regular
season on sour notes. The
Vikings lost three out of
their last five games and the
Saints lost three straight to
close their campaign. While
the Vikings showed signs of
life with a 44-7 demolition
of the reeling New York
Giants in their season finale,
a power struggle between
head coach Brad Childress
and quarterback Brett Favre
cast a dark cloud over the
last quarter of the season
for Minnesota. With Favre,
40, tiptoeing the line of
retirement, it’s officially
Super Bowl or bust for the
Vikings this year.
The Dallas Cowboys,
Green Bay Packers,
Philadelphia Eagles and
Arizona Cardinals will hit
the ground running. For
the Cowboys and Packers,
they wouldn’t have it any
other way. Winners of three
straight, the Cowboys will be
gunning for their first playoff
win since 1996. A road-win
against the once undefeated
Saints and back-to-back
shutouts have the Cowboys
flying high while they attempt
to reverse their recent trend of
late season woes.
The Packers have won
seven of their last eight games
and will open their playoff
run against a Cardinal team
they just annihilated, 33-7,
in Arizona’s home finale.

This case is before the
Court upon consider-
ation of the Plaintiff´s
Motion to Serve By Pub-
lication. The plaintiff filed
a complaint for Absolute
Divorce on August 19,
2009, by which she is
seeking an absolute an
absolute divorce from
the defendant, Meseret
Bezabih. The plaintiff
states that she and the
defendant were married
on June 20, 1994 in
Gondar Ethiopia and
they have continuously
lived separate and apart
since January 1996.
She Claims to not know
the defendant’s current
whereabouts. In her cur-
rent Motion to Serve By
Publication, the plaintiff
has filed an affidavit,
which specifically sets
forth the efforts that
have been made to as-
certain the defendant’s
present address.
Before an Order allow-
ing Service by Publica-
tion may be issued, the
plaintiff must dem-
onstrate that he made a
diligent but futile effort to
locate the defendant,
and must furnish the
court with the following:
(1) the time and place at
which the parties last re-
sided together; (2) the last
time the were in contact
with each other; (3) the

court finds that the
plaintiff has performed a
diligent search. The
plaintiff has provided the
court with the time,
place, and cir-
cumstances of her last
contact with the defen-
dant, which occurred in
January 1996 when she
last resided with the
defendant. The plaintiff
attempted to contact the
defendant’s family in
Ethiopia and spoke with
defendant’s brother, sis-
ter, father and sister-in-
law. Defendant’s family
members told the
plaintiff that they had not
heard form the defen-
dant since 2001. Plaintiff
has also tried to call var-
ious businesses in Gon-
dar, Ethiopia in the
defendant’s past line of
work, however, none of
the businesses she con-
tacted has hired the
defendant. Additionally,
the plaintiff called the in-
