HIV/AIDS Counseling and Testing*
Three-Day Training

Location: Atlanta Date: May 3 – 5, 2011

Who should attend?

All HIV staff that provide individual-level HIV prevention and risk reduction
counseling services.

Goal:

This 3-day training assists providers with preparing for the implementation and
integration of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s 6-step HIV
prevention and risk reduction counseling model into their agency’s programs.

Objectives:

By the end of the training, participants will be able to:

• Improve client self perception of risk;

• Support appropriate behavior change initiated by clients;

• Negotiate a risk reduction plan;

• Develop essential communication and basic counseling skills.

* Effective May 1, 2011, agencies being funded by the Georgia HIV/AIDS Program office must
have their counselors attend a state sponsored or approved HIV/AIDS Counseling and Testing
Course.

Social Networks Strategy
Two and a half day Training

Location: Atlanta Date: June 1 – 3, 2011


Macon July 6 – 8, 2011

Who should attend?

All HIV prevention service providers that want to explore a more targeted
approach to HIV Counseling and Testing.

Goal:

To provide participants with the knowledge and skills needed to successfully


implement a Social Networks Strategy (SNS) for Counseling, Testing, and
Linkage (CTL) in their agencies

Objectives:

At the end of the training, participants will be able to:

• Define Social Networks;

• Differentiate Social Networks Strategy from other agency strategies;

• List the four phases of Social Networks Strategy;

• Describe three benefits of using the Social Networks Strategy to reach


people at high risk for HIV infection;

• Develop a plan for implementing a Social Networks Strategy in their


agency.

3MV
Four-day Training

Location: Atlanta Date: June 7 - 10, 2011

Who should attend?

Prevention providers in public health and community-based organizations


(CBOs) and others who want to learn to use a science-based, small group
intervention for STD/HIV prevention for Black men who have sex with men.

Goal:

The goals of 3MV are to promote changes that reduce HIV and STD risk and
encourage health-promotion behaviors among black gay men. The
intervention focuses on helping participants to better understand the social
and behavioral determinants (i.e., influencing factors) that put black gay men
at increased risk for HIV and other STDs.

Objective:

The primary objectives of the intervention are to positively influence or increase


participants’:

• Identity, values, and self-standards as black gay men;

• Perception of personal susceptibility to HIV and STDs;

• Knowledge of STDs and the interrelationships between STDs and HIV;

• Knowledge of risk-reduction and health-promotion behaviors;

• Intentions to reduce their risk and adopt health-promotion behaviors;

• Skills and self-efficacy (i.e., belief about their ability and capacity to
engage in a certain behavior) related to consistent condom use, condom
negotiation, and partner communication;

• STD and HIV testing behaviors; consistent condom use.

SIHLE

Location: Atlanta Date: T.B.A.

Who should attend?

Group facilitators (or any staff) who will facilitate the SIHLE sessions or
prevention providers in public health and community-based organizations
(CBOs) and others who want to learn to use a science-based, small group
intervention for HIV prevention for sexually active adolescent African-
American females ages 14 – 18.

Goal:

SIHLE is intended to increase knowledge about HIV/AIDS and improve


communication, decision making, and condom use among sexually active
African American female adolescents aged 14 to 18 years.

Objectives:

The objectives of this intervention are to:

• Emphasizes ethnic and gender pride;

• Enhances awareness of HIV risk reduction strategies such as


abstaining from sex, using condoms consistently, and having fewer
sex partners

Motivational Interviewing
Two-day Training

Location: Atlanta Date: June 14 – 15, 2011


Savannah June 29 – 30, 2011

Who should attend?

Prevention providers in public health and community-based organizations


(CBOs) who want to enhance their counseling skills through motivational
interviewing.

Goal:

Motivational interviewing is a directive, client centered counseling style. The


goal is to eliciting behavior change by helping clients explore and resolve
ambivalence in order to change unhealthy behaviors.

Objective:

Following the training, participants will be able to:

• Demonstrate understanding of change theory and motivational strategies

• Explain the relationship between motivational interventions and stages of


change

• Demonstrate basic skills for enhancing client motivation • Identify their own
strengths and learning needs

• Assess clients’ readiness for change

Group Facilitation
Two-day training

Location: Atlanta Date: July 12 – 13, 2011

Who should attend?

Prevention providers in public health and community-based organizations


(CBOs) responsible for facilitating small and large groups.

Goal:

The goal of Group Facilitation is to provide participants with essential skills


needed to effectively facilitate groups, with a particular emphasis on effective
behavioral interventions

Objective:

The training is designed to:

• Provide a basic understanding on the characteristics and role of a facilitator in a


group setting that can influence the response to and delivery of HIV prevention
service;

• Discuss various facilitation styles, scenarios and situations;

• Discuss how cultural factors can impede as well as strengthen the group
facilitation process towards meeting the needs of group members;

• Increase familiarity with group processes and the role group dynamics play
within the scope of HIV education and risk reduction interventions;

• Increase familiarity with the leadership skills that enable providers to foster
positive group interaction for group members;

• Provide an orientation to the role theoretical models have in the process for
developing capacity to provide effective group facilitation for HIV prevention;

• Provide an opportunity to practice skills and techniques that encourage


participation
