Thesis

• Autism Spectrum Disorder starts out at a young

age and continues into adulthood with delays in
social interaction, communication, and different
skills that are developed. Although there has
been many new studies, there is still no known
cure, and that is why we never stop trying to
solve the puzzle.

http://media.photobucket.com/image/autism/shygirl_236415/autism.jpg?o=33

Thesis is explaining what autism is about and how it works. It talks

about how autism is diagnosed as a child and continues into
adulthood. It explains the main disabilities and what skill are
developed. There have been many advances to autism but still there is
no known cure.

Personal Relevance

One of my cousin’s has autism spectrum disorder, and I’m really

familiar with working with her but i wanted to learn more about what
the disorder actually is and how it effects her. I want people to reach
out and help others and try to make a difference in there lives. I know
my cousin helped me become a better person and really touched my
life.

History

Autism comes from “Autos,” Greek

Eugen Bleuler first to discover in 1911
Emotionally disturbed children
The word autism has been used for over 100 years.

• Mayo Clinic. “Autism.” Autism. Mayo Clinic, 2011. Web. 3 Mar. 2011. <http:/‌http://www.mayoclinic.com/‌health/‌autism/‌DS00348>.
http://autismcauses1.com/autism-stories

The word autism comes from the Greek word autos which means self.
For the past 100 years this disorder autism spectrum disorder. In the
year 1911 Eugen Bleuler a psychiatrist who was the first to diagnose
the disease. When autism was found it was used to describe
emotionally disturbed children, still not knowing the entire mean of the
disorder. This was because it was still early and the researchers have
not looked into the autism disorder as much.

History
Leo Kanner was the first to introduce autism to
the world.
1960’s medical researchers had an understanding
of autism.
1980’s-90’s, when learning facilities opened up for
autism.

• Mayo Clinic. “Autism.” Autism. Mayo Clinic, 2011. Web. 3 Mar. 2011. <http:/‌http://www.mayoclinic.com/‌health/‌autism/‌DS00348>.
http://media.photobucket.com/image/autism/stephanyluvzyooh/autism.jpg?o=143

In 1943, Dr. Leo Kanner explained what autism was and how it worked.
He was able to explain this because he had been observing eleven
children since they were born for six years who showed the early signs
of autism. The years were 1938 to 1943. By his research and
understanding this study made it more clear. Kanner observed different
children and had to do many tests and compare the difference in each
child to make sure his studies were correct.

What is Autism

First signs begin at birth or early childhood.

A developmental disorder.
Affects child socially, emotionally, and mentally.

• Autism and PDD Support Network. “What is Autism.” Autism PDD. N.p., 2007. Web. 3 Mar. 2011. <http:/‌http://www.autism-pdd.net/>.
http://www.autismclassroom.com/strategies/parents/communication-encouragement/

Autism is a severe developmental disorder. Children who have this

disorder appear and look to be normal but do not act like it. The
disorder is different in each person who has it. The cases of autism can
range. Some only have it very lightly and are able to interact with
others. In other cases they might not be able to talk. That is why i find
autism so interesting because it affects everyone so differently.

Signs of Autism

Main Problem Areas

Social, Language, Behavior
Signs usually start when child is born.

• Autism and PDD Support Network. “What is Autism.” Autism PDD. N.p., 2007. Web. 3 Mar. 2011. <http:/‌http://www.autism-
pdd.net/>.

Mostly researchers look for a delay in social interaction, the way they
act and speak. Those are the three main areas health professors look
for to find autism. Some childrens symptoms begin right at infancy and
others may not develop until they are toddlers. Those who have autism
usually have a certain routine they are used to. If that routine were to
change they might tend to get confused.

Social Skills

• Fails to respond to
his or her name

• Poor eye contact

• Tends not to listen

Autism makes a person feel uninvited to a conversation making them

not want to associate with others. When having a conversation with
someone who has autism they may not look you in the eye or even look
at you at all. Sometimes they purposely distract themselves by doing
something else and dont care to listen to you. The have a hard time
understanding feelings of others.

Language Skills

Loses ability to say words

Speaks with abnormal tone

People with autism usually begin talking at a later age. it takes them a
longer time to put sentences together and words. you just have to be
patient with them.

JAMIE L MAZZI Saturday, May 7, 2011 9:45:00 PM ET

Behavior Skills

• Repetitive
movement; spinning,
hand clapping

• Doesn’t like change

• Fascinated by
different objects

These skills are different in every child. Some dont like to talk to others
and some cant stop talking once they get started. It depends on their
comfort level.

Someone with autism usually has sensory problems and are sensitive to
things they interact with everyday. a normal reaction to hearing
something loud unusual to their hearing is to cover their ears and
scream because they feel uncomfortable. seeing new textures can
make them confused and again uncomfortable and same goes for the
taste and smells. if a child becomes upset because of sensory issues
then usually tend to be want to be left alone.

Why is it called “Autism
Spectrum Disorder?”
Common Features
Mild and severe symptoms
3 types

• Autism and PDD Support Network. “What is Autism.” Autism PDD. N.p., 2007. Web. 3 Mar. 2011.
<http:/‌http://www.autism-pdd.net/>.
http://www.medinik.com/mental-disorders/art-activities-for-children-with-autism

autism is not just called autism, its called autism spectrum disorder.
Spectrum disorder is an entire range of disorders that have common
features with one another. Another reason why this disorder is known
as a spectrum disorder, is because of how mild someone can have the
disorder to how severe someone might have the it. There are three
different types of autism spectrum disorder, autism disorder, aspergers
syndrome, and pervasive developmental disorder.

In my family we dont look at my cousin as having a disorder but as

being different and unique. There is no known cure for autism but
there are many different ways to help those with the disorder. There
has always been a search to find a cure. No case is the same and the
signs in two different people could be similar but the disorder can
range in all different areas.

JAMIE L MAZZI Saturday, May 7, 2011 9:45:00 PM ET

Causes

http://www.helpyourautisticchildblog.com/date/2008/09/

Its still unclear as to what exactly causes autism, but for the past
couple years there has been a gene mutation study that researchers are
looking for. There are alot of genes related to brain functions and they
may mutate causing autism. its said that 30-50% are inherited.

JAMIE L MAZZI Saturday, May 7, 2011 9:45:00 PM ET

Genetic?

Usually more that one autistic child in a family gets it

Passed on

• Belli, Brita. “The Search for Autism.” MasterFILE Premier. N.p., 2010. Web. 3 Nov. 2010. <http:/‌http://web.ebscohost.com/‌

http://empowerednews.net/hollywood-stars-and-celebrity-athletes-join-the-center-for-autism-in-raising-
much-needed-funds-for-children-with-autism-at-act-today’

Is it Genetic? This question is hard to answer because researchers are

still not positive of the answer. Even though there are families with one
autistic child there are many families with more than one autisitic child.
Studies have shown that a gene with familial autism is found in
chromosome 13. Autism is different in every family. Some families it is
passed on from generation to generation. Most families with autism do
not have strong family history of the disorder.

JAMIE L MAZZI Saturday, May 7, 2011 9:45:00 PM ET

Is it Common?

• “Improving the Lives of All Affected by Autism.” Autism Society. Autism Society, n.d. Web. 22 Dec. 2010. <http:/‌http://www.autism-
society.org/‌site/‌PageServer?pagename=about_whatis>.

http://www.cdc.gov/vaccinesafety/Concerns/Autism/Index.html

When autism was first found it was found in five out of every ten
thousand children. Now its found in every sixty of ten thousand. It
shown to be more common in boys than girls.

JAMIE L MAZZI Saturday, May 7, 2011 9:45:00 PM ET

Who does it effect?

http://louisville.edu/giving/autism/

This relates back to how common autism is. BOys are more likely to
have autism with a 4 to 1 chance then girls but when girls do have the
disorder it is usually much more severe and has a greater impairment
from the world. There is no explanation to why this is but this is what
studies have shown. Every day there is 1.5 million americans who are
effected with autism.

Pervasive Development

Delays in development of basic skills

Age 3 symptoms show

• Autism and PDD Support Network. “What is Autism.” Autism PDD. N.p., 2007. Web. 3 Mar. 2011. <http:/‌http://
www.autism-pdd.net/>.
http://www.bloggingforautism.com/category/autism-therapy/

Children with pervasive developmental disorder have delays is very basic

skills that children at the age of three should already have and should
have no problems developing these basic motor skills. This disorder is
awfully close to autism spectrum disorder and falls under the category.
The definition of pervasive is to be present throughout which is not what
pervasive developmental disorder is. Children who have the disorder do
not have issues in all areas but just one specific area. All other areas of
the child function normally. The child with this disorder has problems in
communicating with others and social interactions. Also is there is any
change in their routine they will become very confused and aggravated
with everyone around them.
JAMIE L MAZZI Saturday, May 7, 2011 9:45:00 PM ET
Diagnoses

Again a child who has autism do not show the signs of autism usually
until they reach the age 3. They may show normal signs of
developmental all the way up to 3. When that child does begin to show
signs they must go through a series of tests to be sure that this cause is
autism. The major test are talking by practitioner who has a good back
ground on autism and other disorders that relate to autism as well. The
practitioner must perform a medical examination and a physical
examination. If the doctors find weakness on one side of the body of
child and more reflexes then usual then the doctor conducts that the
child has abnormal brain activity and needs and MRI examination.

Interaction

• “Improving the Lives of All Affected by Autism.” Autism Society. Autism Society, n.d. Web. 22 Dec. 2010. <http:/‌http://www.autism-
society.org/‌site/‌PageServer?pagename=about_whatis>.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/buyoncegivetwice/3398352508/

When interacting with some with autism they are usually not very social
at first but again that all depends on how serious the case is. You
should not approach someone with autism that doesnt know you, let
them get to know you first. Autistic kids tend to keep to themselves for
most of the time and also when put with a group of people they keep
their distance from the group of people and like to do their own thing
showing little or no emotion at all.

Applied Behavior Analysis
• Young Children

• Teaching basic skills

• One-on-One

• Programs held at
child’s home

http://www.kidsandautism.com/social-stories-for-children-with-autism-problems-with-autistic-children-in-school.html

The applied behavior analysis is a technique used for treating autism.

This treatment is known to be very expensive therefore not widely used
by parents liket his idea and are trying to find ways to have their
children have the opportunity. The reason why parents are so keen on
having this treatment for children is because the teacher comes into
the child’s home and having one on one teaching lesson with that
child.

JAMIE L MAZZI Saturday, May 7, 2011 9:45:00 PM ET

Tests and Exams

• Screen tests at an
early age

• Physical tests

• “Improving the Lives of All Affected by Autism.” Autism Society. Autism Society, n.d. Web. 22 Dec. 2010. <http:/‌http://
www.autism-society.org/‌site/‌PageServer?pagename=about_whatis>.

http://www.hitautism.com/events

Screen tests start at early child when the child begins to show signs of
autism. The earlier these symptoms are found the easier it is for the
doctors to determine which of the types of autism the may child. The
first way anyone would recognize signs of autism spectrum disorder
would be in the childs behavior. If the child is distant and not very
social there is a good chance the child has some form of autism or the
beginning stages. The next step is to test the child is physical tests.
Such as physical examinations, their weights and height, hearing tests.

It is common sense not to do drugs or drink any sort of alcohol during

a mothers pregnancy with a child but any of those could result in a
child having autism. you must also not take any presciption pills unless
they were prescribed by your doctor, this is where chemical exposure
falls under. After an infant in born another way to avoiding autism is to
have your child put in early treatment. if there are any signs of your
child having autism this is a good idea.

Early intervention applies to children of school age or younger who are discovered to have or be at risk of developing a
handicapping condition or other special need that may affect their development. Early intervention consists in the
provision of services such children and their families for the purpose of lessening the effects of the condition. Early
intervention can be remedial or preventive in nature--remediating existing developmental problems or preventing their
occurrence.

Currently there is no medication to take for autism. The behavior and

emotional problems include aggression, anxiety mood swings,
tantrums, and irritability. There might not ever be one but there will
always be medication tot ake to treat all the affects that come along

There are many differnt treatments for treating autism. Depending on

what case there is there will be a different treatment that the child will
recei\
=ve. Therapy is the main treatment for autism. The threee different
types of therapy are behavior and communication, medical and dietary
and complementary therapy. The behavior and communication therapy
focuses on the areas of behavior, communication, sensory integaration
and social skill development. Medical and dietary focuses on use
antibiotics the drugs are mostly used to treat anxiety, attention
problems, depressions, and hyperactivity.

Right now there is no cure for autism spectrum disorder and it is

unlikely that there will ever be a cure but no one will ever stop looking.
Researcher, health professor, family members, and ones with autism
will keep furthering their search for the cure. There are so many
treatments and opportunities out there for those who have autism but
that will never be enough to actually cure the disorder that is why we
will never stop looking.

the symbol for autism is the puzzle piece banner being all different
colors. The reason for puzzles pieces is because they are still trying to
find a cure. and it is said that each child with autism has their own
piece of the puzzle, and the different colors represents the diversity
and different ranges of the disorder and how their special in their own
way.

April is the one month out of the year that the United States has
decided to dedicate to autism awareness. The united states has been
celebrating autism awareness month since the 1970’s. Dedicating an
entire month to autism gives the people who do not associate with
someone who has autism someone who has autism how important it is
to stay involved and help as much as possible. The concern has been
increasing throughout the year. I myself do not have a family member
with autism but yet i remain fully involved as much as possible and i
love it.

Today if someone really wanted to help with the autism cause there are
numerous ways for them to be involved. There are plenty of websites
informing the new advances of autism and explaining exactly what the
disorder is. There are walk events for autism every month until the end
of the year. Then the walk events will be scheduled for the next year.

I worked with my aunt and uncles special needs baseball team. It really
gave me an opportunity to get to know the kids and work with them
each individually. I got to see how they interacted with each other and
they each were completely different. For the baseball team, I would
helped them with there batting, fielding, and run around the bases with
them. I had to deal with each kid really differently because they all liked
to do things a certain way.
