Equivalent Fractions
1
/3 is equivalent to 2/6 because the top and bottom numbers have been multiplied by 2.
4
/12 is equivalent to 1/3 because the top and bottom numbers have been divided by 4.
When writing equivalent fractions, do the same multiplication or division to the top and
bottom numbers.
For example, if you multiply the top by 2, you must also multiply the bottom by 2.
Common factors
The factors of a number are those numbers that divide into it exactly.
Numbers have common factors if the same number divides into both of them.
So 4 is a common factor of both 8 and 12, as it divides into both of them. 2 is a common
factor of both 2 and 6, as it divides into both of them.
Simplest form
4 and 12 have a common factor (4), so 4/12 can be written as 1/3 (divide the top and the
bottom by 4).
2 and 6 have a common factor (2), so 2/6 can be written as 1/3 (divide the top and the
bottom by 2).
However, 1 and 3 have no common factors, so 1/3 cannot be simplified. When a fraction
cannot be simplified we say that it is its simplest form.
It is hard to answer this question just by looking at the fractions. However, if you write
the fractions with the same bottom number, the question will be easy.
3
/4 has a denominator of 4, and 5/7 has a denominator of 7.
4 and 7 both divide into 28, so rewrite the fractions with a denominator of 28.
3 21
/ 4= /28
5 20
/ 7= /28
21 20
It is easy to see that /28 is bigger than /28.
To compare fractions, first write them with the same number at the bottom.

Percentages
It's often useful to be able to find a percentage of a quantity. For example, you might be
told that bus fares are going up by 5% and you need to know how much more you will
need each week.

Q2. Last year Sam earned £20,000. This year her pay has increased by 8%.
a) By how much money has Sam's pay increased?

Ratios
If you are making orange squash and you mix one part orange to four parts water, then
the ratio of orange to water will be 1:4 (1 to 4).
• If you use 1 litre of orange, you will use 4 litres of water (1:4).
• If you use 2 litres of orange, you will use 8 litres of water (2:8).
• If you use 10 litres of orange, you will use 40 litres of water (10:40).
Q.You want to make 7.5 litres of orange squash, how many litres of orange do you
need?
Question
Q. Dave and Lisa win £500 between them. They agree to divide the money in the ratio
2:3.
How much does each person receive?
Example
A model boat is made to a scale of 1:20 (1 to 20). This scale can be applied to any units,
so 1mm measured on the model is 20mm on the actual boat, 1cm measured on the
model is 20cm on the actual boat, and so on.
Question
a) If the 1:20 model boat is 15cm wide, how wide is the actual boat?
b) If the boat has a mast of height 4m, how high is the mast on the model
Example
The scale of a map is 1:50 000. A distance is measured as 3cm on the map.
How many cm, m and km is this equivalent to in real life?
1 cm on the map represents 50 000cm. Therefore, 3cm on the map represents 150
000cm.
To convert from cm to m, divide by 100.
150 000cm ÷ 100 = 1500m
To convert from m to km divide by 1000.
1500m ÷ 1000 = 1.5km
Question
Q. The scale of a map is 1:50 000. What distance on the map will represent 5km?
Approximation/Rounding
By doing this we have rounded 54 785 to the nearest thousand to give 55 000.
1484.5 lies between 1480 and 1490, but it is closer to 1480, so round down.
1484.5 rounded to the nearest ten is 1480.
Rounding to the nearest whole number
1484.5 lies between 1484 and 1485 and it is exactly halfway between them. In this
situation round up.
1484.5 rounded to the nearest whole number is 1485.
If we were to round 1484grams to the nearest half a kilogram, we can see 1484 lies
between 1000 and 1500, is it above 1250 and therefore nearest to 1500, we round to
1500g = 1.5kg
