right or below the grid.
- You can now specify whether you can see both the across and down list at the
same time, or if they maximize to fill their space.
- You can now publish more than one web puzzle in the same directory. Some
web hosts require that all user content must be in the same directory. This web
host limitation no longer causes a problem for Crossword Forge. It is your
responsibility to make sure each html file uses a unique name.
- You can now hide branding and links in web puzzles.
- You can now tweak your web settings before a preview. Previously this would
require a trip to the export dialog.

column.

- Fixed a problem where the save dialog wouldn't show on Windows if your
puzzle title contained special characters like the colon.
Version 5.2.1 (September 10, 2007)
- Minor improvements.

Version 5.2 (August 22, 2007)

- Fixed a stability issue caused when deleting all of the text in the last clue.
- Fixed a problem with the Undo/Redo system for actions that were threaded
(e.g. Making a Puzzle). These now undo/redo properly again.

- Various other improvements.

Version 5.1.14 (August 20, 2007)

- Fixed a text direction problem with right to left languages like Hebrew and
Arabic.

Version 5.1.13 (August 15, 2007)

these items in the answer column (instead of the clue column). Your are still able
to copy and paste clue, answer, and answer type from one puzzle to another.
- Added a contextual menu which will sort the answers alphabetically or
randomize them. The word bank is shown in this order. NOTE: The puzzle grid
will need to be recomputed. Press "Make Puzzle" to do that.
- Added Esperanto as an official language set.
- Various other improvements.

Version 5.1.12 (July 31, 2007)

Forge will also now guess the encoding when importing a file, making the

- Various other improvements.

Version 5.1.11 (July 17, 2007)

word banks are less likely to spill onto a second page.
- Improved grid fit for word search words where a max answer limit is set.
- Various other improvements.

Version 5.1.9 (June 20, 2007)

- Improved fit for word search words. Fits more words in a tighter space.
- Added a preference for extracting symbols and marks. This is useful if you
would like a word like 'x-ray' to not include the hyphen in the grid but include it in
the word bank. To configure this option go to the preferences. By default this
option is off for current users and on for new users of the program. To get the
new user experience, current users can press the "Load Defaults" button within
preferences.
- Improved PDF Export. Fixed minor variances with the PDF specification.
- Other minor improvements.

Version 5.1.8 (June 11, 2007)

- Now shows page margins on screen. To see this the puzzle preview area
needs to be bigger than the page. You can set the margins using File > Page
Setup.
- Improved PDF export. Text positioning in PDF export now matches the print
output exactly, previously the pdf export letters were slightly lower on the page.
- Other minor improvements.

Version 5.1.7 (May 24, 2007)

- Improved PDF export

b. Now draws round rectangles for the word search answer key as
appropriate.

turned off. Since the new border's color changes with the backdrop color, you
can "remove" the border by changing this color to white.
- Can now make puzzles with less answers than given. Crossword Forge will
consider all options when making the puzzle but stops when it reaches the limits
you have specified.
- Fixed a problem when making puzzles with large data sets. Crossword Forge

- Controls in the "Puzzle Update Status" window are now more responsive.
- Other minor improvements.

Version 5.1.6 (May 10, 2007)

- Clue and answer fields now use different fonts. This is great for using non-
unicode foreign language fonts in a bilingual puzzle.
- Added an additional text import format, which allows you to mirror the clue and
answer fields.
- Improved word search printing when clues are enabled.
- Other minor improvements.

Note: Crossword Forge's answer key displays the answer in brackets after the
clue. These bracketed answers are still displayed in the clue font.

Version 5.1.5 (April 18, 2007)

- Crossword Forge Live puzzles no longer hide their top if no title is specified.
- The Update Puzzle Menu item now has 2 sub-items. New and Changed works
just like the old "Update Puzzle" and updates the puzzle with items that have
changed or are new since the last Make Puzzle. "New, Changed, or Selected"
also reconsiders the placement of the currently selected items. If you are in the
clue list view, you can select multiple clues for this operation.
- "Update Puzzle (New, Changed, or Selected)" will now work if you have every
item selected. Previously it would remove all the items, and a subsequent "Make
Puzzle" was needed.
- "Update Puzzle (New, Changed, or Selected)" now guarantees that selected
items will not return to their original location if it is at all possible that they can be
moved.
- Other minor improvements.

Note: There is no guarantee that a selected item won't be removed such that the
puzzle is left disjoint after calling "Update Puzzle (New, Changed, or Selected)".

Note: There is no guarantee that a selected item will be positioned (even it was
previously positioned) after calling "Update Puzzle (New, Changed, or Selected)".
Note: The "Update Puzzle (New, Changed, or Selected)" operation is equivalent
to the clue list contextual menu "Update Puzzle (Include Selected Items)" that
was available in previous versions of Crossword Forge. The feature has been
renamed and has several new enhancements (see above).

Version 5.1.4 (April 6, 2007)

- Now scrolls a misspelled word into view if needed.
- The Windows spell checker will no longer count single letters by themselves as
misspellings (e.g. in the text "option b" "b" will no longer be considered to be a
misspelling).
- Crossword Forge Live puzzle's clue lists now display and hide their horizontal
scrollbar as their areas resize. Previously it used the initial size to determine
whether a horizontal scrollbar was necessary.

Version 5.1.3 (February 28, 2007)

- Fixed issues with saving on Windows 98.
- You can now resize puzzle editor and the font editor with newly added divider
widgets. This comes in handy when working on small computer screens (e.g.
800x600)
- Other minor improvements.

Version 5.1.2 (February 6, 2007)

- More efficient at making crossword puzzles.
- Other minor improvements.

Version 5.1.1 (February 1, 2007)

- Fixes weird behavior when quitting after making word search puzzles
(introduced in version 5.1).
- Using the up and down arrow now works properly in the list view.
- Improved the Mac OS X spell checking dialog to behave more consistently with
how it works in other OS X applications such as Pages or TextEdit.
- Reduced flicker on Windows XP.
- Other minor improvements.

Version 5.1 (January 25, 2007)

- Added an "Update Puzzle" command in the "Edit" menu. This command allows
you keep the puzzle grid as it currently is, but incorporates any changes (new
clues, answer spelling changes) you have made onto that grid.
- Added a contextual menu command to the clue list view which will randomly
reposition the selected answers in the grid (if it can). Because this is a random
process, the answer may stay in the same location as it started.
- Now maintains the currently selected clues (list view) after making or updating
the puzzle. This comes in handy if you want to use repositioning contextual
menu several times in sequence.
- Deleting a "clue/answer pair" now immediately removes the answer from the
grid. This avoids various issues that could previously affect online puzzles in this
situation. It should be noted that using delete in this way can produce islands in
the grid. If you want islands this is a good way to do it, if you don't, press "Make
Puzzle" again and the puzzle will be completely re-made without islands.
- Column widths are now computed properly for word search puzzles with word
bank scrambling turned on.
- Deleting clues when the list view is sorted now deletes the correct clue.
- Other minor improvements.

Version 5.0.1 (December 6, 2006)

- Now reliably honors the "scramble word bank" option of online word search
puzzles.
- Visually improved "Crossword Forge Live" loading.
- In the rare case that Crossword Forge encounters an error during program
startup, it is now more likely to recover.

Version 5.0 (December 4, 2006)

- Now builds interactive word search puzzles.
- 'Greek' is now a built-in supported language.
- Intel Macs now use Mac OS X's built-in multilingual spell checker. PowerPC
Macs were already using that technology.
- Now does copy and paste properly from the clue list view.
- The positioned column of the clue list is no longer partially hidden.
- Other minor improvements.

were introduced in version 4.7.
- Reduces refresh when typing clues in list view (Windows).
- Other minor improvements.
Version 4.7.4 (October 24, 2006)
- Crossword Forge Live can now use the '<' symbol in titles and grid words.

Version 4.7.3 (October 23, 2006)

- Fixed internal errors related to exporting the puzzle. These errors were the
result of some code re-organization that occurred in version 4.7.

Version 4.7.2 (October 23, 2006)

- Improved internal error reporting.
- Fixed some translation omissions in the German version.

Version 4.7.1 (October 17, 2006)

- No longer hangs the Mac version when you scroll the preview pane using the
scroll thumb. The hang was the result of an undocumented change in a third
party tool we are using.

Version 4.7 (October 16, 2006)

- Improved web export panel
- Includes page color and control accent color settings
- Includes save location pop-up for quicker exports
- Added a web preview command for making quick changes to web puzzles
- Other minor improvements

the mouse in between
- Other minor improvements

Mac OS X Specific Changes

- Now runs at native speeds on Intel Macintoshes (now a Universal Binary)
- Now automatically reveals exported web puzzles in the Finder
- Added Preview and Export toolbar items

Version 4.6.7 Limited Release - Windows Only (September 27, 2006)

- Added a document proxy icon to the crossword forge project window. When used with
a command click the user can easily locate the parent folder of the current document. It
can also be used to drag the document into other programs that accept files (e.g. as an
attachment in an email).

Version 4.6.4 (August 29, 2006)

- Improved behavior for admin installations.
- Mac OS 10.1.x and 10.2.x users can now see the contents of the download's disk
image's content without a dual monitor system.

Version 4.6.3 (August 25, 2006)

a. Mouse wheel scrolling over the preview pane scrollbars now scrolls at the
same pace as over the content.
b. Works correctly with mice that support horizontal scrolling (like Mighty Mouse)

Version 4.6.2 (August 22, 2006)

- Now supports selecting multiple clue/answer pairs in list view, this increases flexibility
when using cut, copy, paste, delete and drag & drop.
- Added Select All menu option, for use in editing.
- Now retains clue type information (normal, bonus, word bank only) in list view cut,
copy, paste and drag operations.
- Now supports scrolling the preview pane with a scroll wheel mouse.

files load in Crossword Forge (especially when running Microsoft Windows).

Version 4.6.1 (Jun 30, 2006)

Changes to Crossword Forge Live (Web Export)
- Now more consistent in showing accents and umlauts on capital letters in the puzzle
grid an elsewhere. These accents for some select fonts were higher than the textbox
and were getting clipped. All known cases of the problem have been fixed including the
following (Helvetica, Times, Times CE, Times CY and Hoefler Text). For most fonts this
was never a problem.
- Bonus Clues, with no clue text, no longer shows as undefined
- Choosing Restart from the "Game" menu now resets the bonus clue text as
appropriate.
- Right to left languages now show the grid number text in the upper right of the block
instead of the upper left.

Editor Changes
- Undoing a "Make Puzzle" with Word Search puzzle type now restores the previous
random letters.

Version 4.6 (Jun 13, 2006)

Changes to Crossword Forge Live (Web Export)
-Bonus clues now supported in "Crossword Forge Live" (Web Export).
-"Crossword Forge Live" now supports right-to-left typing for right-to-left language
puzzles (e.g. Arabic or Hebrew).

Editor Changes
-Now allows the Crossword Forge starting point file to be placed in the Crossword Forge
Preferences folder or in the Crossword Forge Application support folder. This can help
you reduce clutter in your applications folder. Starting points placed directly with the
application have priority, followed by those in the user preferences, followed by those
placed in the Crossword Forge Application Support folder.
-Fixed an issue that would cause the bonus clue blanks and answer key not to appear
when loaded from a saved file.
-Dramatically faster load and run times for Chinese and Japanese Windows XP.
-Removed spell checking option when running Crossword Forge under Chinese and
Japanese Windows XP. Previously using this option would
hang the computer indefinitely.
-Smaller file sizes (typically about 8% smaller).
-New version no longer accepts old style unlock codes. It's been well over 3 years
since we issued the last of those codes (February 14, 2003) and the product has come
a long way since then (it was at version 2.3). You may continue to use version 4.5.13 or
any other release prior to today's release indefinitely. Purchases on or after February
15, 2003 should not be affected. Please contact us if you have any comments or
questions about this change, we would love to hear from you.

Windows XP Known Issues and their workarounds:

-Most fonts will not display their typefaces properly on Chinese and Japanese Windows
XP systems. To get proper font support and to re-enable the spell checker, it is
recommended that users temporarily switch their "Regional and Language Settings"
control panel's language setting to a European language prior to launching Crossword
Forge. (This setting is in the popup at the top of the first tab of the control panel).

Version 4.5.13 (Jun 2, 2006)

- Scrambled word banks now more usable. Capitalization is now normalized and
spaces are extracted according to the current language preferences. If extract spaces
is off for the current language, spaces are replaced by underscores. All of these
changes are designed to make using the scrambled words less cumbersome.

Version 4.5.12 (Apr 27, 2006)

Changes to Crossword Forge Live (Web Export)
- New alphabet input palette allows you to enter hard to access foreign characters.
- New About Crossword Forge Live Menu item

(Internet Explorer only)
- Numerous minor improvements.

graphemes end up in the same crossword cell. This feature was added to support the
Dupius font for languages like Salish and Kootenai.
- Numerous minor improvements.

Version 4.5.11 (Apr 13, 2006)

- Fixed a problem in which web export was failing to work because the version string in
the generated html file had an extra carriage return.

Version 4.5.10 (Apr 6, 2006)

- The Alphabet palette now displays its characters in the current font. This is especially
helpful if you are using non-unicode fonts to access to foreign language scripts.
Unicode fonts continue to work.

Version 4.5.9 (Apr 5, 2006)

- Fixed a problem where Word Search Puzzles words could get placed backwards upon
re-opening the puzzle.
- Bonus Answers and Word Bank only Answers can now be as long or as short as
desired.

search. It is allowed.

Version 4.5.8 (Mar 12, 2006)

Changes to Crossword Forge Live (Web Export)
- Now shows a warning if you try to replace a web export project with a new one of the
same name. You can choose to replace or cancel.
- Now supports clue fonts that are unusually tall for their point size. Zapfino is an
example of such a font.
- Adjusted the Horizontal space in clue lists of Crossword Forge Live puzzles to give a
little more wiggle room.
- No longer clips the text of the "Game" menu or other menus.
- No re-highlights the first word of the puzzle when the Restart Menu is chosen.

Windows Specific Changes

- No longer shows two windows on startup. Broken in version 4.5.5

- Various other minor improvements.

Version 4.5.7 (Mar 6, 2006)

- Fixed a clue numbering problem that could occur if the user had "puzzle preview"
checked in the puzzle making status window.
- Import preview improved to better reflect how the various text will import.
- Crossword Forge Live puzzles now use the user specified font for displaying grid
letters, word bank words, and clues. This makes displaying puzzles in some languages
like Salish possible. The default font that we used previously didn't have all of the
required characters. If a user doesn't have the selected font installed on their system
Crossword Forge Live uses "Times".
- Null characters within answers are ignored when adding clues to the puzzle. Null
characters can get in the puzzle data if you import from a source that has them.
- Puzzle making with "preview" turned on is now more fun to watch. Crossword Forge
shows you as each word gets placed. Keep in mind this is far slower than letting it work
without the preview.
- Minor improvements to help clarify various user interactions.

Version 4.5.6 (Feb 17, 2006)

- Fixed a minor issue with the web export caching preferences. The saved value was
opposite of the label.

Version 4.5.5 (Feb 15, 2006)

- If the user has closed all of the Crossword Forge windows, and switched to another
application. Crossword Forge will open a blank window if the user
switches back.
- Better support for Arabic, Greek, Hebrew and more. Added additional combining code
marks (68 new ones) to bring crossword forge up to Unicode 4.1.
- First version localized for German (Kreuzworträtsel-Werkstatt) since version 4.2.6.
- Changed various text labels to make them clearer or otherwise improve them.
- Hidden feature: You can now place spacing letter modifiers in the same block as
letters that they modify. This can be of use if you are working with American Indian
languages like Salish and Kootenai. This feature is experimental and therefore doesn't
have a public interface. To enable this feature:
1. Launch version 4.5.5
2. Find the "Crossword Forge Setup" text file on your computer.
3. change the following text:

<GroupSpacingModifiersWithBase>False</GroupSpacingModifiersWithBase>
to:

<GroupSpacingModifiersWithBase>True</GroupSpacingModifiersWithBase>
4. Save the file
5. Relaunch Crossword Forge.

Version 4.5.4 (Feb 7, 2006)

- Better support for fill-in style crossword puzzles. (You can get a fill-in by turning off the
"Show clues" option and turning on "Show word bank" in the "Puzzle" tab)
a. Numbers are no longer displayed in the grid.
b. Crossword Forge Live now supports this style.
- Added a feature which will allow you to use Crossword Forge Live on websites that
don't allow URL query strings (e.g. "?version=4.5.4"). The use of these strings is
standard and is used in Crossword Forge Live to prevent caching, unfortunately some
web hosting providers don't allow it for their customers (e.g. Verizon in
mysite.verizon.net sites). Crossword Forge now lets you turn off this feature in your live
puzzles so that they can be used on those websites.
- Fixed an issue where Undo could sometimes fail to properly undo a make puzzle
operation.
- Crossword Forge Live now acknowledges that you have completed the puzzle much
faster.
- Minor cosmetic changes.

Version 4.5.3 (Jan 31, 2006)

- Fixed a caching issue, that could prevent the current "puzzle.xml" file from loading in
Crossword Forge Live. Since the format of the "puzzle.xml" files may change from
release to release, this could prevent some end users from seeing the correct puzzle
data unless they emptied their cache. With version 4.5.3 emptying the cache is not
necessary.

Version 4.5.2 (Jan 30, 2006)

- Fixed various issues to improve navigation in interactive puzzles
a. When selecting a previously unselected grid square at the intersection of both
an across and down clue, crossword forge live now maintains the current direction
(either across or down).

across and down clue, crossword forge live always toggles the current direction (either
across or down).
c. Pressing Tab now toggles the current direction (if possible).
d. Pressing Enter now moves to the next clue. Shift Enter moves to the previous
clue. (This was previously done with tab).
- Crossword Forge Live now displays a clearer indication that you've won the game.

again (broken in 4.2.2).
- Other minor improvements.

Version 4.2.5 (Dec 8, 2005)

- Fixed an issue with using "Undo" on a "Make Puzzle" operation, in which the clue
numbers would fail to match the grid.
- Fixed an issue with using "Undo" on a puzzle type change operation, in which the
clues could turn invisible.

Version 4.2.4 (Nov 29, 2005)

- The alphabet palette characters only need a single click to insert
- The alphabet palette is now navigable using the keyboard. Arrow Keys, Page Up,
Page Down, Home and End to move the selection, and space bar, return, or enter to

Crossword Forge to restore the factory defaults.

on your screen.

so that you can
no longer get stuck without the puzzle editor window.

Version 2.2.1 is a minor update with only a few changes

-Letters are now centered in their grid positions so that thin letters like "I" don't look so
out of place.
-The file name is now displayed in the title of the puzzle preview window
-Crosswordz now displays the name of your file in the "Save As" Dialog, instead of
always displaying "MyPuzzle".
-The default file extension for Crossword puzzles has been changed from .txt to .cwz.

out the previous puzzle type.

older versions of Crosswordz.
Highlights of version 2.2
-Language Settings now save with the Crossword file.
-Added an easy way to switch language settings, or to customize language settings.
Just look for the "Active Language" popup in the "Puzzle" tab of the "Puzzle Editor" or
go to the Edit menu and select "Languages."
-You can now set a special font for your puzzle on a language by language basis (or
use the defaults).
"Special Font" is found in the Languages dialog in the Edit menu. The chosen font will
affect: letters in the grid, puzzle labels, clues, and answers. It will not alter numbers in
the grid, or puzzle titles. Fonts for puzzle titles are controlled separately.
-Crosswordz will automatically extract spaces from your answers for use in the puzzle
grid (leaving
the spaces in place in your answer key for readability). If you want the old behavior just
turn "Extract Spaces" off in the Languages dialog. You will need to remake your puzzle
using "Make Puzzle" to see the full effect.
-Crosswordz now gives you the option to turn off capitalization of letters in the puzzle
grid on a language by language basis. Note: French should now have capitalization
turned off (because that is the proper way to deal with accents in that language).
"Capitalization" is found in the Languages dialog in the Edit menu. You will need to
remake your puzzle using "Make Puzzle" to see the full effect.
-2 Japanese options have been added in the language dialog. (Mac ?S X version only)
-Added support for adding a word search label, which appears between the grid and the
clues. Tip: use
this space to give instructions for the word search. "Word Search Label" is found in the
Languages dialog in the Edit menu.

stay clear of the
dock on Mac OS X.

consistent with each other for a more WYSIWYG experience.

puzzle. Crosswordz will warn you if you load a project with this glitch.
