What's New:
Version 5.4 (August 19, 2008)
- Added a "Revert To Saved" menu option. Keep in mind that using Revert will
empty the undo stack, i.e. it is not possible to Undo a Revert.
- Various other improvements.
Note: Crossword Forge's answer key displays the answer in brackets after the
clue. These bracketed answers are still displayed in the clue font.
Note: There is no guarantee that a selected item won't be removed such that the
puzzle is left disjoint after calling "Update Puzzle (New, Changed, or Selected)".
Note: There is no guarantee that a selected item will be positioned (even it was
previously positioned) after calling "Update Puzzle (New, Changed, or Selected)".
Note: The "Update Puzzle (New, Changed, or Selected)" operation is equivalent
to the clue list contextual menu "Update Puzzle (Include Selected Items)" that
was available in previous versions of Crossword Forge. The feature has been
renamed and has several new enhancements (see above).
Editor Changes
- Undoing a "Make Puzzle" with Word Search puzzle type now restores the previous
random letters.
Editor Changes
-Now allows the Crossword Forge starting point file to be placed in the Crossword Forge
Preferences folder or in the Crossword Forge Application support folder. This can help
you reduce clutter in your applications folder. Starting points placed directly with the
application have priority, followed by those in the user preferences, followed by those
placed in the Crossword Forge Application Support folder.
-Fixed an issue that would cause the bonus clue blanks and answer key not to appear
when loaded from a saved file.
-Dramatically faster load and run times for Chinese and Japanese Windows XP.
-Removed spell checking option when running Crossword Forge under Chinese and
Japanese Windows XP. Previously using this option would
hang the computer indefinitely.
-Smaller file sizes (typically about 8% smaller).
-New version no longer accepts old style unlock codes. It's been well over 3 years
since we issued the last of those codes (February 14, 2003) and the product has come
a long way since then (it was at version 2.3). You may continue to use version 4.5.13 or
any other release prior to today's release indefinitely. Purchases on or after February
15, 2003 should not be affected. Please contact us if you have any comments or
questions about this change, we would love to hear from you.
Editor Changes
- Supports Fonts with the Combining Grapheme Joiner (U+034F) such that combined
graphemes end up in the same crossword cell. This feature was added to support the
Dupius font for languages like Salish and Kootenai.
- Numerous minor improvements.
<GroupSpacingModifiersWithBase>False</GroupSpacingModifiersWithBase>
to:
<GroupSpacingModifiersWithBase>True</GroupSpacingModifiersWithBase>
4. Save the file
5. Relaunch Crossword Forge.
Minor Improvements:
-Changing the desired block size, no longer results in an immediate redrawing of the
puzzle. Crossword Forge now waits a few seconds before re-drawing.
-Improved the following built-in language sets: Spanish, German, Chinese (Simplified)
and Chinese (Traditional).
-Fixed a problem where the 'Next' button was disabled, when it shouldn't have been.
-Fixed a problem that could cause the alphabet palette to be empty when closed and re-
opened.
-Numerous other minor improvements.
Version 3.7.6g
-Added German Translations for toolbar items.
The following feature, was included so that we can provide you with better
support, and probably isn't useful to the general public:
-You can unregister the product by holding down the option or shift key before clicking
on the menus and then selecting the register command (now named unregister).
Version 3.1
-The word search centers its words better on the puzzle.
-More columns are created for the word search so that more information shows on a
page.
-Now includes an option of watching Crossword Forge find a solution. To enable this
feature click the "Puzzle Preview" checkbox in the status window. Note: Enabling this
option will slow the puzzle creation process down.
-Older international puzzle now load properly again.
-Corrupt page setup information in a saved puzzle is less likely to cause display
problems
-The missing words are now displaying again in the status window
-The Mac Classic version of Crossword Forge no longer has its registration dialog
obscured by the puzzle editor and the font window.
Version 3.0.9
-New and improved word search creation algorithm. Greatly improves chances of
creating an optimal puzzle in cases where there are many words or the puzzle is small.
Version 3.0.8
-Now suggests a file name based on the puzzle title when saving. Previously
Crossword Forge would always suggest "My Puzzle".
Version 3.0.7
-Fixed an issue where puzzles would have to be rebuilt after opening.
-Fixed an issue where descending parts of fonts would get cut off in the title.
-You can now stop the guided tour in progress.
-We made other minor changes, mostly cosmetic in nature.
Version 3.0.6
-Works again on Mac OS X version 10.1 (temporarily broken)
-Minor cosmetic changes
Version 3.0.5
New Features:
-Added Help. Internet connection required.
-Added a guided tour.
-Added a window menu.
-Status Window now works better.
-More Cosmetic changes.
Issues Resolved:
-Black squares are no longer inadvertently drawn instead of letters while in the word
search mode.
-Answers with spaces in them no longer cause words to appear disconnected from the
rest of the puzzle.
-The ordering of the clues in the word bank is more disconnected with the ordering of
the clues in the puzzle.
-Word Bank's words are now shown as originally typed i.e. no auto capitalization and
space extraction.
Version 3.0.2
-Crossword Forge now has a word bank option for Crossword puzzles. When used it
allows students to pick crossword puzzle answers from a list of possible answers. This
option is especially good for teachers with young students that need a little extra help.
-Often if the no background option was selected it was possible to create puzzles that
looked like they had an extra spot for a puzzle letter. Crossword Forge now fills these
misleading squares with the background color to avoid confusion.
-Other minor cosmetic changes.
Version 3.0.1
-Much faster puzzle generation than previous versions. This is especially true if the
puzzle has many words in a tight space. Crossword Forge is also more likely to find a
solution in these cases.
-An import preview window now helps you decide the right format and encoding of your
puzzle.
-Now skips blank lines when importing files.
-About box now thanks the registered user.
Version 3.0
-New Name (Formerly Crosswordz)
-New Icon
-Other minor cosmetic changes
Version 2.7.4
-Fixed a few minor cosmetic issues.
Version 2.7.3
-Crosswordz 2.7.2 would ask some registered users to re-register. This has been fixed.
Version 2.7.2
-Added HelpTags
-Made the "Desired Block Size" feature of 2.6 easier to use.
-Crosswordz will find backdrop pictures even if they are moved as long as they are in
the same folder as the puzzle.
-Renamed the "Languages..." menu to "Preferences..."
-The active language font feature has been removed, it was no longer needed since
every font is explicitly settable. The feature was confusing and problematic.
-Fixed a few cosmetic issues with the font color control.
Version 2.7
-You can now import data from text files. This is great if you want to bring in data that
you already have in some other file. Crosswordz will import data from files with the
following formats. <tab> represents the tab key.
1. Clue<tab>Answer
Clue<tab>Answer
...
2. Answer<tab>Clue
Answer<tab>Clue
...
3. Clue
Clue
...
4. Answer
Answer
...
Version 2.5
-Added encoding options for exporting clues to allow one to save in the standard Mac,
Windows, or Unicode formats.
-Changed the UI to make it easier to use.
1. Delete Button is now an icon next to the current clue
2. The Cancel button has been removed, but Undo is now available in the Edit
Menu.
3. Commit is no longer necessary since all changes to the clue number will
commit automatically.
4. Added First, Previous, Next and Last buttons to help navigate the clues. The
Next button is the default and roughly corresponds to the previous commit button.
-Crosswordz now remembers whether the Active Language Font was set.
Version 2.4.8
-Puzzles with special characters like umlauts or accents now work again.
Version 2.4.7
-Typing an incorrect registration number in the dialog used for entering old style
registration numbers will no longer prevent users from registering with a correct number.
-Added some text in the dialog used for entering old style registration numbers
explaining how to determine if you have an old or new style number.
Version 2.4.6
-Opening Crosswordz by double clicking a Crosswordz puzzle file will no longer cause
an internal error. The error was especially apparent on un-registered copies of
Crosswordz.
-The "Across" and "Down" labels no longer disappear when using the "Beijing" or
"Taipei" fonts on the Mac OS X version.
-Fixed a few places that didn't get translated from English to German.
Version 2.4.5
-The vertical scrollbar of the puzzle preview window is back. In version 2.4.4 it was
offscreen.
-Pressing the 'tab' key in the Title tab, now switches between the primary and
secondary titles.
-Fixed problems with the German version and its now in sync with the English version.
Version 2.4.4
-Works on Windows again (only tested Windows XP so far)
-The Mac OS X version spools printing much faster than it used to, especially word
search printing. Instead of taking
up to 5 minutes, it now easily takes under 5 seconds.
-Cleaned up the interface a bit.
-Added russian language support. Works best on Mac OS X.
Version 2.4.3
-Now waits 2 seconds before changing the size in the size editor of the "Fonts" window.
-No longer crashes if the size specified makes a clue too large to fit on one page. It will
be a bit messy, but it won't crash.
-Now automatically recovers from setting the font size to 0.
Version 2.4.2
-Word Searches now print twice as fast as they did previously (for the same puzzle
size), if no backdrop color, or picture is specified.
-Much faster editing than version 2.4 or 2.4.1
-Significantly less flicker on OS 9 and windows than versions 2.4 or 2.4.1, and font and
style changes are immediately updated in the puzzle.
-Fixed a problem where it wouldn't load in the font name and size for titles of saved
puzzles.
-Loads the Crosswordz stationery file (namely "Crosswordz Stationery.cwz" or
"Crosswordz Stationery.txt"), after selecting "New..." as well as when first starting
Crosswordz.
-Starting New without the stationery file now restores the default text sizes.
-OS X version no longer crashes if it reads a crosswordz file saved with a Windows or
Classic Mac version of Crosswordz of 2.3.5 and up.
-English Word Search letters now capitalized by default again.
Version 2.4.1
-Crosswordz now works again on OS 9, and hopefully windows (haven't tested, my test
machine is currently not working). I'm truly sorry about this.
-Disabled Page Setup options for OS 9, and Windows since they weren't working
-The Fonts Window now has a resize widget.
Version 2.4
-Crosswordz now supports changing the font, font size, color, and other attributes of
clues and answers. All this is done using the new Fonts Window.
-Crosswordz's titles now have color support.
-Crosswordz's title editor is now larger to allow more space for editing titles.
Version 2.3.6
-The registration dialog no longer limits typing to 22 characters, allowing longer names.
-The registration dialog now works with drag and drop, to make registration simpler.
Version 2.3.5
-Crosswordz now supports "Page Setup". You can print on more than just Portrait US
Letter. Adjust Paper size, orientation, margins at will. Crosswordz will automatically
scale its output to fit the new format.
-Crosswordz puzzles are no longer limited to 27/30. Use as many grid squares as you
like. Crosswordz will still try to use the default 20x20 block size it always has, but if
there isn't enough room it will scale the block size down as needed. Now you really can
make big puzzles!
Version 2.3
-Crosswordz now does a much better job loading puzzles. It is much less likely to have
a problem placing words where they were saved.
-A "Load Defaults" button has been added to the languages dialog.
-It is now possible to create word search puzzles that have words against the top and
left side. A bug prevented this previously.
-Words that were backwards in a word search puzzle, will now remain backwards if you
open the puzzle again.
-Registration has been simplified, in preparation for a more automatic sales process.
New Registration keys consist of a name, and a Serial #. The old keys will continue to
work, and as such Sol Robots will not issue new keys to existing customers.
-Crosswordz Default stationery is no longer as easy to overwrite. You will be forced to
do a SaveAs instead of a Save.
-You can use a file named "Crosswordz Stationery.cwz" as well as the older
"Crosswordz Stationery.txt" as your default stationery. Just place it in the same folder
as Crosswordz.
Version 2.2.2
-Tightened up the Puzzle Title. Wastes less space between the last title and the puzzle.
-Now doesn't reserve any space for the title, if no title is present.
-Improved the visibility of letters in the word search, when viewed on a background
other than white, especially picture backgrounds.
-Show answers in word searches now draws a rounded rectangle around the word.
Previously it would draw circles around individual letters of the answer, making it harder
to see the answers especially if many words were clustered close together.
-Added a menu item for making the puzzle, with a corresponding shortcut (Mac
Command M / Windows Ctrl M)
-Pressing 'Shift-Tab' on the 'Clue' tab of the Puzzle Editor, now will cycle through the
fields on that tab in the opposite order.
-Changing the case of a puzzle now has a much more immediate effect. You no longer
need to press Make Puzzle to see the full change.
-Rearranged the order of the buttons on the 'Clue' tab of the puzzle editor to hopefully
be more intuitive to first time users.
NOTE: Puzzles saved in version 2.2 of Crosswordz will not work properly if opened in
older versions of Crosswordz.
Highlights of version 2.2
-Language Settings now save with the Crossword file.
-Added an easy way to switch language settings, or to customize language settings.
Just look for the "Active Language" popup in the "Puzzle" tab of the "Puzzle Editor" or
go to the Edit menu and select "Languages."
-You can now set a special font for your puzzle on a language by language basis (or
use the defaults).
"Special Font" is found in the Languages dialog in the Edit menu. The chosen font will
affect: letters in the grid, puzzle labels, clues, and answers. It will not alter numbers in
the grid, or puzzle titles. Fonts for puzzle titles are controlled separately.
-Crosswordz will automatically extract spaces from your answers for use in the puzzle
grid (leaving
the spaces in place in your answer key for readability). If you want the old behavior just
turn "Extract Spaces" off in the Languages dialog. You will need to remake your puzzle
using "Make Puzzle" to see the full effect.
-Crosswordz now gives you the option to turn off capitalization of letters in the puzzle
grid on a language by language basis. Note: French should now have capitalization
turned off (because that is the proper way to deal with accents in that language).
"Capitalization" is found in the Languages dialog in the Edit menu. You will need to
remake your puzzle using "Make Puzzle" to see the full effect.
-2 Japanese options have been added in the language dialog. (Mac ?S X version only)
-Added support for adding a word search label, which appears between the grid and the
clues. Tip: use
this space to give instructions for the word search. "Word Search Label" is found in the
Languages dialog in the Edit menu.
-Crosswordz's "Puzzle Preview" window is now taller on monitors that support it. It will
stay clear of the
dock on Mac OS X.
-Now its easier than ever to purchase and register Crosswordz, with 2 new menu
options.
