Reflective Statement for IPTS 2 Brittany Granquist

Artifact: Listening Assessment

PTS 2. Human Development and Learning: The competent teacher

understands how individuals grow, develop and learn and provides learning
opportunities that support the intellectual, social, and personal development
of all students.

1. Write a paragraph explaining your knowledge and understanding of the

standard-put the

standard in your own words.

I think that this standard wants me to recognize the importance of understanding how my

students grow and how the differences in their physical, social, emotional, ethical and cognitive

development influence the way in which they learn and their success in and outside school. The

educator needs to employ his/her knowledge of development and learning to lesson planning and

implementation to ensure students’ needs are being supported. In addition, I need to be

knowledgeable about the impact that various disabilities, including cognitive, emotional,

physical, and sensory, have on learning, behavior and communication.

2. Explain how the artifact you chose demonstrates your understanding and
application of the

standard.

The artifact I chose that demonstrates my understanding is an assessment regarding the listening

skills that one of my students demonstrates during small and large group instruction. This student

has not been diagnosed with ADHD, but he displays many of the qualities of a student struggling

to remain focused because of this disorder. The listening assessment was administered to assess

how often he utilizes effective listening, and how he transfers listening to his own understanding.
This artifact demonstrates my understanding and application of the standard because when

answering the questions on the assessment, I considered “how [JM] constructs knowledge,

acquires skills, and develops habits of mind” and how his development is being impacted by his

impulsive behavior and inability to focus in on more than one task. I believe that by assessing

JM’s listening skills, and using the assessment to make instructional modifications, I am

applying this standard in a meaningful way.

3. A If the artifact has been used in your practice, reflect on how your
teaching will change in

the future to further meet the standard.

B. If the artifact has not been used in your practice, i.e., a class
assignment, reflect upon how

your teaching will be impacted by the assignment.

The artifact has been used in my practice in that I have used the assessment to collaborate with

my students’ speech teacher. The assessment was used to identify how well a student uses

listening skills within the classroom. My teaching will change in the future to further meet this

standard in that I will continue to assess my students and how their abilities affect the way they

learn. This assessment led me to consider how my student’s disorder affects the way he is able to

listen to and retain knowledge. I believe that this is a proactive step and will allow educators to

make informed decisions regarding his health and success. I will continue to address issues when

they are first noticed and I will do so by collaborating with other teachers and with students’

parents as well.

4. Conclude with a paragraph discussing how you are more prepared to

Teach and Learn in a

Diverse Society as a result of satisfactorily meeting the standard.

The artifact I have chosen has prepared me to teach and learn in a diverse society as it focuses on

the diverse skills and disabilities represented in my classroom. In my current placement, six of

my students have IEPs for various learning, emotional and cognitive disabilities. This artifact has

given me the opportunity to consider how a particular student performs for one specific task. I

believe that I am prepared to teach in diverse settings because I am aware of the effort it takes to

monitor behavior and development and how to modify instruction and routines to best help my

students learn, regardless of their abilities and disabilities.
