1 Step Pass Route Terminology

Swing (o) : Flair route by Running Back. Release parallel to LOS.

Hitch (1) : Outside Receiver quick Hook in at 5 yards.

Slant (2) : Outside Receiver inside break, 3 steps up field, break to the middle the field.

Out (3) : Outside Receiver speed break out. Plant at 7 yards, back to 5.

Stick (3) : Inside Receiver immediate release to the flat. Work to depth of 5 yards, look quick.

In (4) : Outside receiver speed break. Plant at 4 yards toward middle of field.

Turn (5): Inside Receiver drive up field to 10 yards, plant with inside foot, turn to the outside
and comeback to 8 yards. Find the open window.

Corner (7) : Inside Receiver deep corner route. At 7 yards burst to corner.

Fade (9) : Outside Receiver deep “Go” route straight up field. At 4 steps fade to 5 yards from
the sideline.

Seam (9) : Inside receiver streak straight up the field. Use hash marks as a landmark.

Whip : Inside slant, pivot at 5 yards. Slide away from pressure.

Wheel: Inside receiver convert Stick route to a “Go” route up the sideline.

+ Go : Fake shorter route (Hitch, Slant, Out, Slide). Convert to a Fade/Seam.

Hot Read : In certain Pass Protections, a Blitzing Defender may be unaccounted for. The
Quarterback and Receivers must be alert for Audible call or quick throw.

Mayday: Uncovered rule for slot receivers on a run play. Call made by QB to tell offense to
execute the quick pass. Green Protection.

Terminology

Alpha: Used in 1 Step Passing with Gold Protection. Tells the Linemen to slide protect left (RB Goes
Right and protects directly off hip of the Tackle).

Bravo: Used in 1 Step Passing with Gold Protection. Tells the Linemen to slide protect right (RB Goes
Left and protects directly off hip of the Tackle).

Gold: Indicates Slide (Zone) Pass Protection. Step and reach play side, protecting the play side gap. Do
not chase. If a defender leaves, someone will be coming back. (RB Blocks off the edge opposite
side of the call.)

Green: Indicates Big on Big Stack Responsibility Protection.

Yellow: Indicates Max Big on Big Stack Responsibility Protection. (Wingbacks and Running Backs, stay in
to protect unless tagged with a route).

Thunder: Call made by the Center in Green and Yellow Protection indicating he will work with the Right
Guard on the stack.

Flash: Call made by the Center in Green and Yellow Protection indicating he will work with the Left
Guard on the stack.

your post snap read is the play side flat defender. If the flat defender flies to the Slant
route, hit the Bubble. If the flat defender hesitates or drops back, hit the Slant route
immediately. Your secondary post snap read is the play side CB. If he flies up on the
Bubble, hit the W Back running the Corner route in the open area behind the CB. If the
CB bails, hit the bubble.

Line up as wide as possible, about 4 yards from the sideline, and run a Fade route. Force
X Receiver an outside release. If you see the cornerback leaving you and sitting in the flats expect
the ball to be thrown to you.
Run an Out. Speed break out at 6 yards. Be aware of the possibility of the cornerback
A Back rolling up and sitting in the flats. If the corner rolls, you need to comeback to the football
at an angle to avoid running into him.

Step up in protection and look for the #1 linebacker blitzing. If he doesn’t show help

inside with protection.
Pre-snap you are reading the alignment and leverage of the defenders over the W and A
Backs. If the A Back has a defender on his inside, he is your primary target. If Both
defenders are playing outside leverage and tight on the receivers, look backside to the
Quarterback
quick Slant route. If both defenders are playing off or inside the W and A Backs you have
the choice of throwing to either receiver. If you recognize a blitz, especially backside,
look for the quick Slant.
