Most Outstanding Thesis and Most Outstanding Dissertation Awards

The U.P. College of Education recognizes the Most Outstanding Thesis and Most
Outstanding Dissertation Awards annually in order to invite students aim for academic
excellence and quality research. With the continued support of Department of Science and
Technology (DOST) since 1993, the college is able to grant cash prize incentive to honor the
best graduate students in the area of research.

The Most Outstanding Thesis and Most Outstanding Dissertation Award competition is open
to masters and doctoral students who completed their thesis/ dissertation the U.P. College of
Education within school year 2010-2011 including summer 2010.

THE PROCESS

The Nomination

The U.P. College of Education Research and Development Committee handles the selection
process. For best thesis and best dissertation, each area in the College of Education is
invited to nominate one candidate for every ten [10] masters graduates and one candidate
for every ten [10] doctoral graduates from the area for schoolyear 2010-2011 including
summer 2010. The nomination form should be supported by the area’s description of the
student’s research contribution, addressing the criteria listed below (see criteria). The
nomination documents must consist of:

• A nomination form, signed by the faculty members in the area, that clearly
establishes the reasons for nominating the thesis/ dissertation.
• Five (5) bound copies of the thesis/dissertation.
• One (1) electronic copy of the thesis/ dissertation in CD.

All nomination materials must be received by the UPCEd R and D Committee (c/o
Karen Bautista at Room 110) no later than March 28, 2011 at 5:00p.m.. Submissions
after the deadline will not be considered.

The Selection

Three invited selected evaluators, who must be scholars and must have good research
track, will judge the submitted nomination documents. The team of evaluators may be
composed of the following:

• A graduate [not within the span of five years] or retiree from the UP College of
Education or a faculty of UPIS or NISMED
• A faculty from other UP colleges related to College of Education
• A non-UP administrator/ faculty in other prestigious universities (who may also be a
retiree from UP College of Education)
The evaluators will be given selection guidelines and will use assessment templates
specifically developed for this task. They will also be asked to write a brief report on the
strengths and weaknesses of each thesis/ dissertation.

The scores of the theses/ dissertations will be ranked based on the scores they gave each
thesis/ dissertation. The ranking of the evaluators will be tallied and the highest rank will be
given the award.

The Criteria

The selection of best thesis and best dissertation is based on the following criteria:

• Novelty (15%). The thesis/ dissertation has innovative features, clearly demonstrating
the unique contribution it has made either theoretically (i.e., expansion of established
ideas, provision of new insights to an educational issue) or practically (i.e., new design/
approach introduced)

• Impact (25%). This refers to the contribution of the thesis/ dissertation to the knowledge
base of the discipline and its clear and practical applications to the resolution of a
problem or problems in education.

• Quality of Research Methodology (25%). The methods and research design are
appropriate to the research question. The study followed procedures to assure reliability
and accuracy of data and sufficient protection for human subjects.

• Quality of Analysis (25%). The interpretations provide insights into the pattern of the
data and don’t overstate the findings. Limitations are addressed with suggested future
studies. Evidence is sufficient and well-utilized. Biases are identified. Multiple
perspectives considered. Information is evaluated, analyzed, and synthesized.

• Overall Quality of the Written Document (10%). This includes style and organization,
use of language, and quality of review of literature. The document shows evidence of a
mature, scholarly voice. Critical understanding of literature is evident. Sources are rich
and diverse.
