THE G-INDEX
A set of articles, when ranked in decreasing order of the number of citations that they received,
the g-index is the (unique) largest number such that the top g articles received (together) at least
g2 citations. The set of articles is defined primarily the author of the articles, and hence, g-index is
normally calculated for the authors.
It is also used for comparing the research performance of the universities and hence this also is a
measure for ranking of the various universities. For this, two parameters are considered: g- index
of each faculty, i.e. department, and the g-index of highest globally performing faculty.
Normalization is performed based on the g-index of highest globally performing faculty. An
interfaculty average is taken to arrive at a final Research Performance Index (RPI) value to
indicate all round relative performance. For calculation of RPI, the various faculties are grouped
into 5 as given below:
Considering this thought in mind, the evaluation of universities based on this parameter is
analysed. Many universities specialise in a particular area. For example, IITs are essentially
technical universities. Very rarely is a paper produced in the field of medical or arts by IITs.
Below is the g-index of the 5 faculties of IIT Kanpur and IISc, and that of Harvard.
As it is evident in the table above, IIT Kanpur and IISc get a far lower RPI than their relative g-
indices in PNMS and ECT because they have a very low relative score in medicines, biological
sciences, and arts. The already low number of researches in this area by such institutes is further
glorified by the fact that to calculate the relative index, it is divided by the g index of faculty with
maximum g index. Hence, there is an inherent flaw in the measurement of research productivity
of an institute by this method alone, especially for universities that are specialist institutes.
As it is clear from the definition, the g-index is a greater measure of the number of citations,
than the number of articles published by any university. A higher g-index hence means a higher
citation level, i.e. higher impact of the paper on the related science. So, we can conclude that g-
index captures the impact of the research much more effectively than it does just the output.

I am allotted New York University. The university below and above in the high impact university
list are Northwestern University and University of California respectively.
As expected, a higher citations-author ratio translated to a higher H-index. The student faculty
ratio is very high in University of California, but still due to its impact, it ranks above the other
two, who have half the student-teacher ratio.
