EMPLOYMENT NOTICE NUMBER 2 / 2011.
Applications are invited from eligible Male and Female candidates for filling up the posts of
Sub Inspector in the Pay Band of Rs.9300-34800/- + Grade Pay Rs. 4200/- in the Railway
Protection Force (RPF) including Railway Protection Special Force (RPSF). Details are given
below:
1. NUMBER OF VACANCIES:
SC ST OBC UR TOTAL

SC means Scheduled Caste, ST means Scheduled Tribe, OBC means Other Backward Class
as defined by the Government of India and UR means Unreserved.
Note (i) Reservation for Ex-Servicemen will be upto 10% of the vacancies. Further
category-wise break up for SC, ST and OBC will not be done under this quota.
Note (ii) 10% of the vacancies shall be filled up by female candidates in each category.
Note (iii)
(a) The number of vacancies shown under various categories is provisional and may
increase or decrease or even become nil depending upon the requirement of the
Railway Administration.
(b) The Railway Administration reserves the right to cancel the recruitment as well as
the notified vacancies at its discretion at any time and such decision shall be
binding on all concerned.
(c) In the event of cancellation of the recruitment, the examination fee will not be
refunded.
(d) The Post of Sub Inspector in the Railway Protection Force including the Railway
Protection Special Force has not been identified as suitable for persons with
disabilities by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
(e) The selected candidates will be liable to serve anywhere in India in the Railway
Protection Force including the Railway Protection Special Force.
2. PAY AND ALLOWANCES:
The post carries a Pay of Rs.13500/- in the Pay Band of Rs.9300-34800/- including Grade Pay
of Rs. 4200/- with such allowances that are admissible under Railway Rules.
3. INELIGIBILITY:
No person who has entered into or contracted a marriage with a person having a spouse
living or who, having a spouse living, has entered into or contracted a marriage with any
person shall be eligible for appointment in the RPF including RPSF.
4. ELIGIBILITY:
a) Citizenship: The applicant must be a citizen of India.
b) Education: The applicant must have passed the Graduation or equivalent examination
conducted by a recognized University. Educational qualification obtained from
institutions other than a recognized University should be submitted along with the
Government of India notification declaring that such educational qualification is
equivalent to Graduation for employment under Central Government.
c) Age: The applicant must not be less than 20 years and not more than 25 years as on 1st
July 2011. That is, he/she must not have born before 01.07.1986 and after 01.07.1991.
Age mentioned in the Matriculation or equivalent certificate will only be accepted.

d) Relaxation in Age:
Note: The persons claiming relaxation under Sr No. 6, 7 & 8 above must produce a
certificate to the effect that they had been domiciled in the State of J&K during the period from 1st
Jan 1980 to 31st Dec 1989 from the District Magistrate within whose jurisdiction they had
ordinarily resided or from any other authority designated on his behalf by the Govt. of Jammu &
Kashmir.

5. METHOD OF RECRUITMENT:
Recruitment will be made based on the performance of the eligible applicants in a Written
Examination, Physical Efficiency Test, Physical Measurement, Viva-Voce Test, Bonus Marks, if
any, obtained and Documents Verification. Written Exams will be held first and only those who
obtain the prescribed minimum marks will be called for Physical Efficiency Test & physical
measurement.
A. WRITTEN EXAMINATION:
(a) The Written Examination will consist of 120 multiple choice objective type questions of one
mark each and shall be of 90 minutes’ duration. The question paper will carry 120 as
maximum marks. The question paper will consist of 35 questions on General Intelligence &
Reasoning (35 Marks), 35 questions on Arithmetic (35 Marks) and 50 questions on General
Awareness (50 Marks). Candidates will be required to answer all the questions. Each correct
answer will be awarded 1(one) mark and 0.25 mark will be deducted for 1 (one) incorrect
answer. No mark shall be awarded or deducted for questions not attempted.
i. General Awareness (50 marks) :- Questions in this component will be aimed at testing the candidate’s
general awareness of the environment around him and its application to the society. Questions will also be
designed to test knowledge of current events and of such matters of everyday observations and experience
in their scientific aspect as may be expected of any educated person. The test will also include questions
relating to India especially pertaining to History, Arts & Culture, Geography, Economic Scene, General
Polity, Indian Constitution, Sports, General Science, Scientific Research etc.
ii. Arithmetic (35 marks) :- This part will include questions on problems relating to Number systems,
Computation of whole numbers, decimal and fractions and relationships between numbers, fundamental
arithmetical operations, percentages, ratio and proportions, averages, simple and compound interest, profit
and loss, discount, use of table and graphs, mensuration, time and distance, ratio and time etc.
iii. General Intelligence & reasoning (35 marks) :- It would include questions of both verbal and non- verbal
type. This component will include questions on analogies, similarities and differences, spatial visualization,
spatial orientation, problems solving analysis, judgment, decision making, visual memory, discrimination,
observation , relationship concepts, arithmetical reasoning, verbal and figure classification, arithmetic
number series, non-verbal series, coding and decoding, statement conclusion, syllogistic reasoning etc.
(b) Candidates must bring the Call Letter at the time of written test. Call letter will be sent by
post. No one will be allowed to appear in the written examination without a call letter.
(c) Question Paper will be set in Hindi, English, Urdu, Marathi, Bengali, Telugu, Oriya, Punjabi,
Gujarati, Tamil, Malyalam, Kannada, Konkani, Assamese and Manipuri. Applicants who wish
to have the question paper in a particular language may indicate so in the Application Form.
Language, once chosen cannot be changed under any circumstance.

(d) The call letter will contain the date, place, venue and time of the examination and other
instructions, if any on this subject.
(e) A candidate must obtain at least 40% marks (35% in the case of SC and ST candidates) in the
Written Examination for being considered for other Test /Tests.
a) Only those applicants who qualify in the Written Examination shall be called for PET
and Physical Measurement. The manner in which the candidates are to be called and
the number of candidates to be called for PET and Physical Measurement will be
decided in such a way that candidates, to the extent of three times the number of
notified vacancies in each category, are selected purely on the basis of merit to appear for
viva-voce and documents verification.
b) PET will consist of the events as given below in the table. A candidate has to qualify in all the
events to be declared qualified in PET. The PET will be qualifying in nature. The minimum
qualifying standard for each event is specified as under:
c) 1600 meters / 800 meters run will be held first and only those applicants who qualify in this event
will further take part in the remaining events of the PET. Only those candidates who qualify in
1600 meters/800 meters run will be measured for height and chest (applicable for male candidates
only). Applicants, who fail in any of the events of the PET or in physical measurement, either of
height or chest, will be declared ‘failed’ and shall be escorted out of the venue after putting an
indelible ink mark on the index finger of the left hand. Their call letters will not be returned.
d) PET will be held at a specified place and on a specified date and the applicants will be informed of
the same in advance.
f) The call letter for PET will give further instructions, if any, on this subject.
(c) Maximum mark for the Viva-Voce Test is 15 (Including Bonus marks)
(d) Bonus marks:
Bonus marks are allotted as under:
i) NCC: -
B Certificate of NCC – 01 mark
C Certificate of NCC – 02 mark
* Maximum bonus marks for NCC certificate will not exceed 02 .
* Benefit will be given only on production of Original Certificate supporting their
claim
ii) SPORTS (As per list indicated below)
Represented University at inter-university sports - 01 mark
Represented State at inter-state sports – 02 marks
Represented India at an International sports meet – 03 marks.
Medal winner at national level sports meet – 03 marks
* Maximum bonus marks for Sports certificate will not exceed 03.

iii) Total Bonus Marks for all categories put together shall not exceed 5.
(e) The call letter for the Viva-Voce will contain further instructions, if any, on this subject.
6. MEDICAL EXAMINATION:
The applicants who are finally selected will be sent for a medical examination at a Railway
Hospital. They will have to qualify in medical category ‘B-1’ as prescribed in Indian Railway
Medical Manual. Those wearing glasses or having flat foot, knock-knee, squint eye, colour
blindness and other bodily defects are not eligible for appointment.
7. TRAINING:
The candidates will have to undergo a rigorous initial training in any one of the RPF/RPSF
Training Centres or any such Institution as decided by the Railway Administration in the
event of their selection. The trainee cadets will be given a stipend of Rs. 9300/- + Grade Pay
Rs.4200/- plus other allowances as admissible under the Railway Rules during the period of
training. Passing the Final Examination at the end of the training is a must for appointment
to the Force.
8. HOW TO APPLY:
The income certificate issued by the authorities mentioned above will have to be on the
Format given in Annexure ‘F’.
B. Application form: a) The format of the application form is given at Annexure ‘A’. Application
forms can be downloaded from the official website of Indian Railways
(www.indianrailways.gov.in) or taken from the Employment News/Rozgar Samachar or from this
advertisement and submitted on A-4 size bond paper, using one side of its leaf only and sent to
the address corresponding to the language chosen for the Question Paper. Only one application
need be sent. The addresses to which the completed application should be sent, the details of the
person in whose favour the Draft/IPO shall be drawn and the place where payable are given
below. The languages for the question paper are also shown for the convenience of the
applicants.
b) The words, “APPLICATION FOR THE POST OF SUB INSPECTOR IN RPF INCLUDING
RPSF” shall be superscribed on the envelope containing the application.
c) The exact date, time, place and venue for the tests will be intimated to the candidates
through Call Letters.
d) Applications should be sent through ordinary post only. No application will be received by
hand or by registered post or through private courier service.
e) Applications should be filled by the candidates in their own handwriting, in Hindi or English
only. Left Hand thumb impression in the case of Male applicants and Right Hand thumb
impression in case of Female applicants shall be affixed in the box given at the bottom of the
application. Applications signed in capital letters/spaced-out letters will be treated as invalid.
Applications with correction or overwriting or smudged thumb impression may be rejected.
f) Coloured photograph (3.5 cms x 4.5 cms) of the applicant should be pasted at the space
provided in the application form with clear front view of the face without cap and sunglasses.
9. NOTES:
a) Applicants called for Written Examination/PET/Viva-Voce and Documents Verification shall
make their own arrangements for boarding, lodging and transport.
b) The applicants called for the PET will take part in the events at their own risk. Railways will
not be liable to compensate the candidates in any way, in case they suffer any injury while undertaking
the PET. They should bring with them sports gears such as sports shoes, shorts, vest etc. Nothing will
be provided by the Railways.
c) Candidates must bring writing materials such as pen, pencils, etc for the written test.
d) Railway Passes to the eligible candidates shall be issued as per extant Railway Rules.
e) Impersonation, if any, detected at any stage of the recruitment, may result in initiating
criminal cases against the applicant and the impersonator as well as canceling the candidature
of the applicant.
f) Candidates found to be having adverse report on their antecedents and character may not be
appointed in RPF including RPSF. False declaration/production of false certificate is an offence under
the law and will lead to disqualification of the applicant, institution of criminal case and also dismissal
from service, if appointed. Hence, applicants are advised to be careful while filling in the application.
g) The decision of Selection Committee on all matters relating to eligibility, place, venue, date,
mode of selection, acceptance or rejection of the application will be final and binding on the
applicants.
h) If a candidate has any grievance regarding physical measurement and the Chairman of the
Recruitment Committee does not redress the same, he may, within three days, approach the
Grievance Redressal Cell in the office of the Zonal Chief Security Commissioner concerned whose
decision shall be final.
i) Persons applying under the Ex. servicemen quota should note that in accordance with the
instructions of the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pension, Govt.of India, an
applicant who has already availed the benefit of Ex. serviceman’s status and got any Govt. job
shall not be allowed to avail the benefit under the Ex. Serviceman quota in this recruitment.
k) The Railway Administration reserves the right to call an applicant to any place for the
Written Examination/PET /Viva-Voce/Documents Verification.
