10. Handicap Calculation and Tracking

10.1. Overview
mScorecard™ automatically calculates handicaps for all players based on played rounds
and player’s handicap system. The mScorecard™ handicap is not an official handicap and
in order to establish and maintain an official handicap, please follow the rules and
guidelines of your national golf association.
Handicaps are calculated centrally on the server. Whenever a new round is sent to the
server, new handicaps are calculated for the players on that round. If a round is marked as
a handicap round for the player, as described in section 5.1, it will be used in the handicap
calculations.
The process goes as follows:
1. Choose a handicap system for each player (see section 10.2).
2. When starting a new round or editing an existing round, specify whether it is a handicap
round for each player (see section 5.1).
3. After the round is complete, post it to the server (see section 7.2).
4. The server calculates a new handicap for each player of that round based on the player’s
handicap system and the handicap rounds stored on the server. If player’s handicap
changes the following screen is displayed:

5. If you want to update the new handicaps on the device, tick the player checkbox.
6. Select OK.
10.2. Selecting Handicap System

Player’s handicap system determines how the handicap

is calculated. This can be specified as follows:
1. Open the Edit Player screen by selecting the Edit
or New command on the Players screen.
2. Enter the player’s current handicap in the Handicap
fields if it is not correct.
3. Select the Handicap System from the list.
4. Select Save.
10.3. Previewing handicap history on the website
A complete handicap history can be presented graphically on the website for each player
by clicking Players -> Player_name.

By clicking the Edit Hcp History you can edit handicap rounds and manually adjust
handicaps.
10.4. Handicap Systems
mScorecard™ currently supports the following handicap systems:

Hcp System Description

America mScorecard™ does not use the USGA handicap formula because this is
prohibited by the USGA. However, mScorecard™ provides a good
approximation for the player’s handicap.
Handicap is calculated using the best 10 rounds from the last 20 rounds.
If there are less than 20 handicap rounds stored then the 50% of the
rounds are used in the calculation. At least 4 handicap rounds have to be
stored in order to be able to calculate the handicap.
The handicap is calculated by taking 92% of the average of the best
handicap differentials.
An equitable stroke control is used to limit the maximum number of
strokes on each hole.

Asia Handicap is calculated using the best 10 rounds from the last 20 rounds.

Australia Handicap is calculated after each round based on handicap differentials.

If a differential is greater than the player’s handicap and is not within the
buffer zone, the handicap is increased by 0.1.
If a differential is lower than the player’s handicap, the handicap is
reduced by an amount per stroke that the differential is below the
handicap. The amount per stroke is between 0.1 and 0.5 and is
determined by the players' handicap category.
An equitable stroke control (ESC) is used to limit the maximum number
of strokes on each hole.
Europe Handicap is calculated after each round based on stableford points.
If the player’s stableford points total is below the buffer zone, the
player's handicap is increased by 0.1 or 0.2 depending on the players’
handicap category.
If the player gets more than 36 stableford points, the player’s handicap is
reduced by an amount per each point exceeding 36. The amount per
point is between 0.1 and 1 and is determined by the players' handicap
category.

New Zealand Handicap is calculated using the best 10 rounds from the last 20 rounds.
South Africa Handicap is calculated using the best 10 rounds from the last 20 rounds.
At least 5 handicap rounds have to be stored in order to be able to
calculate the handicap.
The handicap is calculated by taking the average of the best handicap
differentials.
An equitable stroke control is used to limit the maximum number of
strokes on each hole as follows: A golfer may take as many double drops
as his/her handicap allows. The double drops are taken automatically as
they occur until all the double drops have been taken.

UK & Ireland Handicap is calculated after each round based on nett differentials, using
the following definitions:
Course handicap = playing handicap
Course rating = Standard Scratch Score (SSS) = CSS
If a nett differential is above the buffer zone, the handicap is increased
by 0.1.
If a nett differential less than zero, the handicap is reduced by an amount
per stroke that the differential is below zero. The amount per stroke is
between 0.1 and 0.5 and is determined by the players' handicap
category.
An equitable stroke control (stableford adjustement) is used to limit the
maximum number of strokes on each hole.

used.

has to have par or better. Otherwise the hole is tied.

Handicaps Nassau can be played with full handicaps or with no

handicaps. Handicap strokes are awarded based on the
handicap value for a hole.

Presses
If a player or team falls down they can press the opponent. The press starts a new mini-
match for the remaining holes of the nine being played. The press amount is the amount of
the original bet (i.e. double-or-nothing). The original Nassau is still in effect while the press
is being played. There is no limit on the number of presses that can be put into effect.
Presses don't have to be accepted, but usually are.
