Did you know that a variety of mobile applications for smartphones now support the
library proxy service?
If you would like to be able to find and access full-text articles from your device you will need to enter a
specific URL into the applications settings. The location to enter the information depends on the application
itself, but it can typically be found in the settings section of the applications. Our EZProxy URL prefix is
http://libproxy.uthscsa.edu/login?url=
but to use it with these mobile applications you need to add %@ to the end of that: See below for the
screenshots of PubMed On Tap.
1. Open the application and select settings.
2. Select the Library Proxy tab.
3. Place the following URL in the box, and turn on the EZProxy: http://libproxy.uthscsa.edu/login?url=%@.
Other applications that use the same URL structure to access full-text articles via EZProxy include Papers for
Mac OSX, and Papers for iPhone and iPad.
If you have any comments or questions about setting up your device for article access, please contact
askalibrarian@uthscsa.edu.

Infection with the HIV virus was found to predispose persons to opportunistic infections and
cancers. Epidemiologic investigations revealed the disease was transmitted sexually, by blood products, IV
drug use, and from mother-to-child. Cases of AIDS exploded throughout the world in 1980s and 1990s.
Millions upon millions have suffered and died. Efforts to control the disease have been hampered by
prejudice against infected persons. AIDS has become one of the greatest public health challenges in modern
medicine. Currently, about 33 million people are infected across the globe. Efforts to develop vaccines
against HIV have failed. Nevertheless, in the last 15 years, combination antiretroviral therapy has
transformed the treatment of HIV infection, converting a deadly disease into a chronic, manageable
condition. Analysis of the history of the HIV epidemic in the United States reveals the power of these drugs
and also the deficiencies of drug therapy to combat this disease.
