The Krakatau complex is situated in the sunda strait,lampung

province Indonesia between 105’27’44’’ longitude and 6’03’0’
longitude and approximately 60 km NW of carita.(figure)

the Krakatau volcanoe consistof four island:

-Rakata island,located in the most southern part,triangular in shape

with the highes point being 813m
-sertung island,in the northwest part of the group with the heights
poin of 182m
-panjang island,located in east part of the island groupwith the
highestpoint of 132m
-anak Krakatau(Krakatau child),located in the midlle part of the
island groups with the highest point of the avtive cone reaching
201.5m(july 1983).

Krakatau volcanoe is one of approximately 130 volcanoe that

occur in the 6000 km
Long chain of island that make up the Indonesian are.this nare is
produced by the collision of the Indian Australian platen to the
south as it converges with and slips benath the eurasion plate to
the .geologist call this zone convergence a SUBDUCTION ZONE
( figure 2& attachment).as the Indian Australian plate clips deeper
into the upper region of the earth,partial of rock within the
subducted plate occur and MAGMA is produced.generally this
process occur within the upper few hundred km’s of the earth outer
shell or LITHOS PHERE magma produced in this way is usually
less dense than enclosing wall rock and is able to rise buoyantly
towards the surface. Some magma eventually erupts onto the
earth’s surface produced a volcanoe the time needed to form
volcanoes is measured in hundred of thousand to millions of year,a
time that is short in a geological sense,but one that is beyond our
human experiences.occasionally volcanoe,do change considerable
during the course of a human lifetime.
To day we will see that Krakatau has under ground a large
amount of change since it’s major eruption in 1883.

THE 1883 KRAKATAU VOLCANOE ERUPTION:

The 1883 eruption of Krakatau volcanoe was among the larges that
have occurred in historical times and it caught the attention of the
world in a way than no other eruption in history had done.

On August 26,1883 the big bang came (figure4.)for 19 hours the

most violent explotions ever ,force of 100.000 hydrogen bombs
tore Krakatau apart.the island was invisible behind a giant wall of
smoke ash, fire and pumice the thunder of the explosion turned
into a continuous infernal roar.

Krakatau volcanoe the ejected matter much quicker than it could

be replaced from the c enter of the earth.eventually,yhe volcanoe
exhausted its magma contents,leaving cubic mile of empty
chamber below the island.

On August 27 krakatau’s cone coved in three quarter of the

island,17sq km of surface,collapsed into the belly of the earth
below.millions of the gallons of sea water
Were than sucked into void.all along the coasts of west java and
southern sumatera the sea receded at a speed of a 18 km’s per
hours.
Below the remnants of the Krakatau volcanoe the water formed
millions of tons boiling rocks and magma, causing tremendous gas
explosions.this triggered earth quakes on the ocean floor that
catapulted the water back inland.the resulting killer waves raced at
speed up to 525 km,per hou7rs and reached height of 41 meters.

The explosions were heard 5500km’s away,from srilangka to

perth.giant aves crashed ashored and destroyed hundred of town
village,reachind almost 15 km inland in some places.waves were
felt in the englist channel,16,500 km’s away from Krakatau over
36,000 people killed an injured.

Debris from krakatu, blown appro ximatelly 40 km’s

upward,traveled around the earth several time,blanketing the whole
of the globe’s surface (figure 5).the surrounding area was dark for
3 day.pressure waves from the blast circled the earth over time.

POST 1883 KRAKATAU VOLCANOE ERUPTION

All that remains of Krakatau volcanoe to day is a 750 m

stump,where the 450 cone stood,lies 275 meters of sea water.the
120 meters cone also disappeared. But the story of Krakatau is not
finished.

In 1927, in a middle of submarine crater a new volcanic island

began to rise from the sea where the old island had existed.in
1942,if reached 132 meters above the sea it was named ANAK
KRAKATAU(Krakatau child)

The mountain of Krakatau child ( gunung krakatau)activity

continues since then.in November 9,1992 thee the mountain of
child Krakatau was erupting and was so far in along periode of
constant eruptions,commemorating it 110th anniversary in Au gust
1993.
