PERIODONTICS MODULE 4
Evidence Based Practice
Cost: £50.00
The initial presentation sets the scene and examines the development of evidence-based
approach. The second presentation covers the principles of clinical trials and systematic
reviews and explains some basic statistical methods and terminology.

Aims & Objectives:


 To appreciate how the concept of evidence-based dentistry has evolved with
particular reference to Periodontics.
 To learn how to evaluate the quality of published evidence.
 To understand the essential role of clinical trials and systematic reviews in dental
research.
 To learn how to use the library and Internet for data searching.
This course should enable participants to:
 Recognise the difference between objectivity and subjectivity in dental research
papers.
 Distinguish between good research and bad research in the dental literature.
 Identify methodological faults in dental research.
 Search databases (hard copy and electronic) with confidence.

PERIODONTICS MODULE 6
Surgery for the Non-Diseased Patient
Cost: £100.00
An initial presentation on indications and techniques for pre-restorative surgery is followed
by a practical session on pigs jaws, incorporating the surgical techniques learnt and practices
on Module 5. This is followed by an extensive presentation of treated human cases. The
afternoon session is devoted to periodontal plastic surgery, combing the theory and practice
(again on the pig jaw) of grafting techniques including free gingival grafts and connective
tissue grafts. Phil supplies pig jaws (one per participant, with spares available) but not
surgical equipment, which must be brought by each participant.
Handouts will be supplied.

MEDICAL EMERGENCIES IN DENTAL PRACTICE

emergencies. Fortunately, these are rare, but they do occur and your team will be expected
to manage them.
The course will cover the current national guidelines on managing a medical emergency and
will be presented by lectures and hands on practical training.
Topics covered on the day are:
 Medical risk assessment
 Emergency drugs in dental practice
 Medical emergency and resuscitation equipment
 Anaphylaxis
Skill stations to include
 BLS, intravenous access and automated external defibrillation
 A systematic approach to recognising the acutely ill patient, management of the
compromised airway and dental chair medical emergencies

BACK TO BASICS PERIODONTICS
Cost: £30.00
This course is designed for dentists, dental hygienists and dental therapists. It will introduce
a simple method for periodontal risk assessment using a novel BPE-based matrix and cover
all aspects of patient evaluation from periodontal screening to the selection of the most
appropriate care programmes for the individual patient. Medico-legal and ethical issues will
be discussed in relation to the growth in litigation in the UK, particularly for undiagnosed or
inappropriately treated periodontal disease. Aspects of the periodontal–restorative
interface will be highlighted including the issues regarding implants. Simple criteria for
evidence-based treatment modalities will be illustrated in addition to current criteria for
referral. A model prescription for dental hygiene treatment will be promoted and other
practical tools for dental professionals in risk-management of periodontal disease will be
offered. The Course is designed to address:

An all-day programme which includes seminars on key aspects of dental occlusion, the
cardinal aims, patient examination, techniques for assessing and recording the occlusion,
use of splints. Practical includes use of articulator, using a facebow, recording occlusal
positions, creating a customised guidance incisal table, fabricating a Lucia jig. Application of
key elements of occlusion to everyday restorative situations will be discussed from the
occlusal carving of amalgam and composite restorations to tooth wear cases and TMD.

FIBRE REINFORCEMENT FOR COMPOSITES

This is an introductory lecture to show how fibre reinforced technology (the treatment of
the future) can help you to solve many everyday clinical problems in the most cost effective
manner and with the minimum of surgical intervention. The following topics will be covered:
 What are these fibres?
 Brief History. Comparison between
 Different fibre systems currently available.
 Durability and performance of the fibre reinforced restorations.
 Different indications.
 Clinical cases.
The Hands-on training Session is divided into four modules. Each module starts with an
introduction lecture and step-by-step demonstration, followed by clinical cases illustrating
the different techniques and finally the trainee (delegate) is given the opportunity to work
with the fibres under supervision.
