PERIODONTICS MODULE 6
Surgery for the Non-Diseased Patient
Cost: £100.00
An initial presentation on indications and techniques for pre-restorative surgery is followed
by a practical session on pigs jaws, incorporating the surgical techniques learnt and practices
on Module 5. This is followed by an extensive presentation of treated human cases. The
afternoon session is devoted to periodontal plastic surgery, combing the theory and practice
(again on the pig jaw) of grafting techniques including free gingival grafts and connective
tissue grafts. Phil supplies pig jaws (one per participant, with spares available) but not
surgical equipment, which must be brought by each participant.
Handouts will be supplied.

Aim:
This programme assists participants in acquiring essential knowledge and practical skills so
as to improve Health and Safety standards in the dental environment. It is open to any
member of the team who takes an active role in managing health and safety in the work

BACK TO BASICS PERIODONTICS
Cost: £30.00
This course is designed for dentists, dental hygienists and dental therapists. It will introduce
a simple method for periodontal risk assessment using a novel BPE-based matrix and cover
all aspects of patient evaluation from periodontal screening to the selection of the most
appropriate care programmes for the individual patient. Medico-legal and ethical issues will
be discussed in relation to the growth in litigation in the UK, particularly for undiagnosed or
inappropriately treated periodontal disease. Aspects of the periodontal–restorative
interface will be highlighted including the issues regarding implants. Simple criteria for
evidence-based treatment modalities will be illustrated in addition to current criteria for
referral. A model prescription for dental hygiene treatment will be promoted and other
practical tools for dental professionals in risk-management of periodontal disease will be

MEDICAL EMERGENCIES IN DENTAL PRACTICE

All Dental Practitioners and Dental Care Professionals may have to deal with medical
emergencies. Fortunately, these are rare, but they do occur and your team will be expected
to manage them.
The course will cover the current national guidelines on managing a medical emergency and
will be presented by lectures and hands on practical training.

Emergency drugs in dental practice
Medical emergency and resuscitation equipment
Anaphylaxis
Skill stations to include
BLS, intravenous access and automated external defibrillation
A systematic approach to recognising the acutely ill patient, management of the

This popular course includes a short seminar on etiology and how to easily monitor your
wear patients but focuses on management in general practice, from prevention to intervention
with the latest adhesive aesthetic materials as well as a conventional approach. This course
will easily teach you: how to recognise which patients can be managed easily with composite
build-ups and those which cannot, when and how to re-establish the horizontal occlusal
position, how to manipulate the vertical dimension, tooth preparation. Bring models to
discuss if you wish. Part seminar with a lot of hands-on including treatment of severe cases
(on models).
