The story of Erik Roemer for 32 years

I

Test after test, scan
after scan, Erik remained
positive and determined to
him from enjoying every
day to the fullest. After a
yearlong battle, Erik went
into remission in December
2006.It seemed that Erik
had won his battle for life.
He found a job working at a
local car dealership and
continued living life fully
and passionately.

ne of my earliest rec-
ollections as a kid was
one Christmas when
I was about four years old
where my younger sister got a
big beautiful dollhouse under
the tree. It was a true beauty,
with two levels (complete with
an external staircase), bal-
conies, and even a full kitchen.
My father had worked so hard
on it. At two years old, she
wasn’t quite sure what to do
with it, but I guess the most
logical option in her toddler
mind was to climb up the stairs
of the dollhouse. Well, the
weight of her baby fat took the
whole structure down, only to
leave my poor father with the
daunting task of rebuilding it
after all his hard work. If the
videos didn’t stand as proof,
my sister would probably still
deny it had ever happened. But
would you believe that rebuilt
dollhouse is still sitting in our
basement today? There really
is something special about a
dollhouse, isn’t there? Even in
2011 when the art of building
miniature homes is slowly fad-
ing, there truly is something
nostalgic about it.

“SLAP tears,” which stands for
Superior Labral Anterior –to-
Posterior Tears. With the
shoulder being one of the most
mobile joints in the body, the
superior labrum can experience
a significant amount of stress
across it, particularly with over-
head activities. Attached to
the superior labrum is the long
head of the biceps tendon.
(There are two heads of the bi-
ceps, the long head which goes
into the shoulder joint and the
short head which attached to a
bone in the chest.)
To put it mildly, there is an
enormous amount of differing
opinions among shoulder sur-
geons of how to treat SLAP
tears. Some surgeons are aggres-
sive in operatively fixing the
tears. Other surgeons yawn and
look the other way with SLAP
tears, and believe that the
greater pain source is from the
biceps tendon which is attached
to the superior
labrum. Never-
theless, one thing
seems to be certain
: not all SLAP
tears must have
surgery. Many pa-
tients seem to do
perfectly fine with
just conservative
treatment of superior labral
tears. The tear often doesn’t
seem to get worse, and the suc-
cess rate for an operation does
not seem any less by waiting
several years.
With Mrs. B, she was hav-
ing a moderate amount of
shoulder pain with reaching be-
hind her back and with over-
head activities. She had tried
two sessions of physical therapy
which did not seem to help very
much. She was still sleeping
okay at night and had started on
a course of NSAIDs. Her
physical exam showed some ev-
idence of biceps tendonitis and
rotator cuff impingement, but
her strength and stability ap-
peared to be intact.
“Well, Mrs. B” we ex-
plained, “we are going to discuss
several options with you, but
surgery is not one of them.” All
of a sudden, her color came
back. We explained to her that
two sessions of physical therapy
was not adequate treatment to
get her shoulder better. We
also discussed various injection
options with her, but empha-
sized that it is perfectly reason-
able to try physical therapy by
itself first. So off she went,
happy as a clam, for a month
trial of physical therapy. Ap-
parently, she had read the pre-

pay close attention to the com-
pany financial statements as
they will help them make bet-
ter business decisions regarding
the operations of the business.

Cat scratch options By Dr. Matthew Krupnick

S
cratching is a normal,
inborn behavior of
cats. Cats scratch and
stretch on various things for
two main reasons. The most
obvious reason that we think
of is to sharpen or groom their
claws. Scratching can also
serve another lesser known
purpose. Cats have sweat/
scent glands on their paws, so
when they scratch on items
such as furniture or posts, cats
are leaving their scent behind
as a way to mark their terri-
tory. The scratching also
leaves a visual marker of terri-
tory. They often return to
these objects that have their
scent to spread it again and it
appears that they have ‘fa-
vorite’ places to scratch. Cats
may also scratch simply to
stretch their muscles.
Knowing why cats like
to scratch household items is
half the battle in preventing
slashed drapes, scratched
sofas, and ripped up carpets.
We can use this information
to our advantage and try to
get a cat to not scratch our
furniture and instead only use
approved scratching posts. In
general, proper training, to
scratch appropriate surfaces,
combined with frequent nail
care, can prevent damage in
the home.
The name of the game is
to provide options. You can-
not prevent your cat from
scratching, but you can train
them to scratch only in cer-
tain approved areas. A type of
scratching post will give your
cat the alternative place to
scratch. Cats scratch most
frequently right after waking
so it is critical that the
scratching post is convenient
to where they spend much of
their time, such as windows
or sleeping areas, or where
they are currently preferring
to scratch.
Many cats seem to prefer
vertical scratching posts, al-
though some prefer horizontal
posts. Vertical posts must be
sturdy and should be tall
enough for the cat to be fully
stretched and not reach
higher than the top. Horizon-
tal corrugated scratching pads
are favorites for cats as well.
Scratching post materials
come in a wide variety and
some cats will prefer one over
another. Therefore if you’re
cat pays no attention to the
post, don’t give up, try other
materials. These materials
can be wood, sisal rope, rough
fabric and carpet.
Training to use scratch-
ing posts is most effective
when your cat is first intro-
duced to the home. This is
done by enticing the cat to
the scratching post upon
awakening, rubbing catnip on
the post (or even easier is cat-
nip spray), and using treats or
toys part-way up the post to
encourage stretching and
scratching. Positive reinforce-
ment, praise and rewards
should be given at each step.
If your cat is already
scratching the furniture or
curtains, first try to find out
whether your cat prefers ver-
tical or horizontal objects and
their material preference and
provide these options. We
also want to discourage use of
unapproved areas. A common
method is to use a water gun
or squirt bottle. It is impor-
tant that the cat doesn’t
think it is you spraying them.
They need to associate the
undesirable squirt of water
with the inappropriate item
they’re scratching. You can
also place double-sided tape
on or plastic runners upside
down (so the ‘nubby’ side is
up) around inappropriate
areas. It is also important to
remove the cat’s scent with
an enzyme cleaner. With any
correction try to direct the
cat to the post or approved
scratching surface and reward
its use.
Routine nail care is very
important to decrease the de-
sire to scratch often.
The tips of your cat’s
nails should be trimmed every
one or two weeks. Introduce
nail trimming as part of rou-
tine handling to kittens so it
will be well tolerated as an
adult cat. Another option to
prevent household damage
are plastic nail caps.
These usually need
to be applied every
4-6 weeks. With
practice, they can be
easy to apply if your
cat will allow the
handling of their
paws in such a way:
after a nail trim, fill the cap
about a third of the way with
adhesive, and fit the cap over
the nail.
Declawing is a highly
controversial way to prevent
unwanted scratching in the
home. Declawing involves
amputation of the end of the
digit at the distal phalangeal
joint. That is equivalent to
removing the tip of your fin-
ger at the joint just before the
nail. Declawing is controver-
sial because it can cause a
great deal of pain and may
not be a necessary surgery.
Cats that are declawed must
remain indoors only for their
lifetime because some of their
defenses have been taken
away. It is recommended that
the procedure be avoided if at
all possible but if you find
that it is necessary to declaw
consult with your veterinar-
ian for options and behavioral
advice.

Women’s Club will sponsor two
young women, currently in
their junior year of high school,
to attend the Girls’ Career In-
stitute at Douglass College from
June 13 through June 16. The
Institute is a program offered by
the New Jersey State Federation
of Women’s Clubs (NJSFWC),
which reflects its interest in
helping young women face a
challenging future, and to afford
them a taste of college life, of-
fering them an opportunity to
learn of the many career options
available to today’s young
women. This is a unique expe-
rience, whereby the girls will
meet and interact with dele-
gates from all over the state.
The theme for this year’s Insti-
tute is: “Believe in Yourself”.
The delegates will be chal-
lenged by successful women
who have dreamed the dreams,
believed in them and achieved
prominence in their chosen
profession. Three local presen-
ters will be Dr. Tanya Maximoff,
Doctor of Chiropractic, Debra
Socci, Esq., Attorney and
Maryann Henry, Speech
Pathologist. In addition to at-
tending seminars on non-tradi-
tional career choices, the
delegates will be able to partici-
pate in organized sports activi-
ties, orchestra, chorus, crafts,
and other supervised leisure ac-
tivities. A committee of
Women’s Club members will as-
sist in the selection. Club-
women from the NJSFWC
volunteer their time as house-
mothers, with two housemoth-
ers per wing. GCI Fact sheets
have been distributed to the
guidance department. Terry
Cavanaugh, GCI Chair for the
Montville Township Women’s
Club, will be one of the house-
mothers, and parents and other
interested parties are urged to

far more intense chemotherapy,
the hours upon hours to be
spent at the hospital on an al-
most daily basis, Erik’s strong
spirit never dwindled. His mind
was made up. He was going to
overcome his cancer and the
treatment or die trying.
As time went on, it be-
came clear that Erik was chang-
ing physically; however, he
never let on to his friends how
bad things really were. He felt
that these things happen to peo-
ple all the time, and this time it
was happening to him. “Feel the
fear but do it anyway” was his
motto and his drive. Through
the pain, weakness and fear, Erik
carried on with his life.
Before the cancer had
taken his ability to walk, Erik
flew to Florida with his mother
to visit family friends. While he

would come to feed him, shower
him, and just love him. Each
and every time his visitors
would leave, they would lean
down and kiss him and tell him
how much they loved him.
There was so much love and so
much respect for him. Erik was a
man deeply loved.
Erik passed away on July
20, 2008. He fought a valiant
battle. He was a soldier without
a uniform. He was a hero with-
out a medal. Even after his
death, his memory continues to
fill the lives of the people that
loved him. His friends continue
to keep in touch with his sister,
Lianna, and his mother on a
regular basis. They even cele-
brate his birthday at the begin-
ning of each October. It is the
memory of Erik that keeps all
who loved him connected. He
brought a family together and

forever be connected to brain
cancer research. At his funeral,
Rev. Jeff Gibelius said “even
though Erik’s life as we know it
is over his story is only begin-
ning. The best is yet to be.” He
was so right.
Erik wasn’t just your aver-
age Joe. He was a legacy-leaver.
His life’s mission was to make
people happy, part of the group,
and most importantly, make
people feel loved. He did his job
well. It is truly remarkable that
even though he is not with us,
Erik’s legacy continues to make
beautiful things happen and
brings people together in a pro-
found way. It was Erik’s motiva-
tion that drove some of his
friends to finish school, travel,
and just be the best person they
can be. A group of his friends
even honored him in Septem-
ber 2010 by skydiving in his

many, skydiving represents one
of the most horrifying fears the
natural world has to offer. Yet
even in his weakened state, Erik
wanted to experience the free-
dom and excitement of jumping
out of a plane. After consulting
his doctor, on November 28,
2007 Erik went skydiving from
18,000 feet. He wasn’t feeling
well that day, but he was so ex-
cited about going it simply did-
n’t matter. As his mother waited
for him on the ground, she sud-
denly saw what looked like a lit-
tle bird coming through the
clouds. “Yeeee Haaa!” she
heard. It was Erik flying through
the air! What an emotional mo-
ment it was for his mother to see
her son experiencing such free-
dom!

grown very weak and could no
longer walk without assistance
and was placed in hospice care.
