Activity 3 | Nikola Marinov Abadzhiev

Watercolour  painting

Oil  painting

I prefer the oil painting, because there is harmony: the movements and the colours, (white
and red), the shapes, the shadows, mainly the paint brush spots and the contrast of the
ladies’ white scarves around their dark hair.

Task A

1-

Nikola Marinov Abadzhiev was born in Targovishte in July, the 10th, 1879.
He studied in Italy, where he became a famous painter. When he came back to Bulgaria, his
name was already known. He was a teacher (between 1921 and 1940) and the Director of the
National Academy of Arts in Sofia (between 1935 and 1939). Ilia Beshkov, Ivan Nenov,
Dechko Uzunov Nenko Balkanski, Ilia Petrov, Alexander Zhendov, Alexander Stamenov, etc.,
were among his students in former times. They all turned out to be famous Bulgarian painters
later in their lives.

For this reason a school with his name was built in the city where he was born, as well as a
gallery of art was opened in his honour. He was, and still is, a highly respected man and
painter.

Task B

I chose this painting, because the features are very soft and real. The girl’s eyes are so bright
and tender and also her nose and smile turned out to be so harmonious and sweet. Even her
long and wavy hair is so gracious. A very well succeeded painting.

Task C
1 - Yes, I have several original paintings belonging to my family. Some are unique. I chose
three of them, which represent three important and beautiful provinces of Portugal. The first
one is a glance of down town in Lisbon. The second one is a painting representing a small
village on the top of a hill in the province of Alentejo. Finally the last one shows us the strong
contrast of the blue ocean and the white houses in the province of Algarve.

2 - Yes, to share with my partners and friends the Portuguese culture represented in each
painting.

Evaluation
1- I didn’t find real difficulty to answer most of the questions. Of course some were
harder. But it was OK, because I enjoyed the research.

2- At the beginning it was harder and we took some time to get into the project. But as
time went by, we got the right team feeling for this work and everything turned out to
be funny and interesting and so it flowed easier.

Conclusion
- When Nikola Marinov was young and began showing some talent to paint, his family
decided to send him to a High School of Law, where he should study to become a
lawyer. It must have been hard to him.

- I admired his courage not giving up his sensibility to Painting and his decision to
leave his country and study in Italy, dedicating his life to Art.

- Through his strong personality he came back to Bulgaria as a famous painter and
this way he achieved what he really wanted for his life.

- Yes, I do.
