OBJECTIVE
Computerization of the Management department will need changes
in most design aspects including room layout, computer hardware,
printing systems, softwares, etc.

• To establish a LAN connection in Management Department

• To create a computer laboratory for students as well as faculty

• Create a network for faculty members.

• Create a network for computer laboratory.

This computer laboratory is specially designed for professors and

students, at the department level as a special purpose laboratory
the intended target audiences are students who elect to take
courses in preparation or pre-requisite in the field of management.

This facility will provide training to students to enhance the technical

skills and bring proficiency in different software’s.

A total of 32 seats will be available to students for each session.

Similarly according to needs, all other staff rooms are connected to

network (with future expansion possibilities). Each Staff Room will
consist of PC’s as required with a printer and each room will employ an
economical wiring scheme with network ports for each PC’s and extra
port for future expansion. These network ports would be connected to
the two hubs for faculty network and laboratory network accordingly.
Both the networks would be connected to the server directly.

SPECIFIC APPLICATION SOFTWARE

The greatest influence on the computer hardware itself is the intended
application and operating system.

These will drive the need for more powerful computers, larger monitors,
specific printing needs, and other technical decisions.

Some of them are:

• MS office
• ERP packages like SAP, Oracle e-Business Suite
• Turbo C
• Oracle
• Java- Net beans
• Unix / Linux
• Windows 2000-NT Server
• Windows XP/Vista/7
• Visual Basics
• Antivirus/Malware Protection

NETWORK TOPOLOGY
STAR Topology

Star networks are one of the most common computer network

topologies. In its simplest form, a star network consists of one central
switch, hub or computer, which acts as a conduit to transmit messages.

Data on a star network passes through the hub, switch, or concentrator

before continuing to its destination. The hub, switch, or concentrator
manages and controls all functions of the network. It is also acts as a
repeater for the data flow. This configuration is common with
unshielded- twisted pair cable.
Advantages of STAR Topology:
• Better performance: The star topology prevents the passing of
data packets through an excessive number of nodes. At most, 3
devices and 2 links are involved in any communication between
any two devices. Although this topology places a huge overhead
on the central hub, with adequate capacity, the hub can handle
very high utilization by one device without affecting others.

• Isolation of devices: Each device is inherently isolated by the

link that connects it to the hub. This makes the isolation of
individual devices straightforward and amounts to disconnecting
each device from the others. This isolation also prevents any non-
centralized failure from affecting the network.

• Benefits from centralization: As the central hub is the

bottleneck, increasing its capacity, or connecting additional
devices to it, increases the size of the network very easily.
Centralization also allows the inspection of traffic through the
network. This facilitates analysis of the traffic and detection of
suspicious behavior.

• Simplicity: This topology is easy to understand, establish, and

navigate. Its simplicity obviates the need for complex routing or
message passing protocols. Also, as noted earlier, the isolation
and centralization it allows simplify fault detection, as each link or
device can be probed individually.

• Easy to install and wire.

• Easy to detect faults and to remove parts.

• No disruptions to the network when connecting or removing

devices.
DEVICE SELECTION FACTORS
To meet user requirements, a LAN needs to be planned and designed.
Planning ensures that all requirements, cost factors and deployment
options are given due consideration. When selecting a device for a
particular LAN, there are a number of factors that need to be
considered. These factors include, but are not limited to:

• Cost
• Speed and Types of Ports/Interfaces
• Expandability
• Manageability
• Additional Features and Services
