2010 Political Activity by Companies invested in by the New York State Pension Fund
In the past week, attention has been brought to actions by placement agents and state legislators to influence
investments made by New York State’s Common Retirement Fund.
In 2010, 265 of the companies whose shares and funds are invested in by the New York State Common
Retirement Fund spent a total of $31,931,816 lobbying in the state.1 The Fund currently invests
$26,861,288,051, or 44.1% of its domestic and international equity, in these companies.2 Additionally, these
companies gave $2,595,055 to the legislative leaders’ campaign committees in 2010, representing half (49.18%)
of the money these leadership committees received directly from businesses.
Since April of 2009, the use of placement agents and lobbying the Comptroller on investment decisions has been
banned. Thus, the companies identified lobbied on issues other than investments by the pension fund, as
disclosed in reports filed with the Commission on Public Integrity. As the public discussion unfolds about what
role, if any, lobbying should play in investment decisions, this information provides a window into the resources
deployed and the potential influence wielded by major players in the state’s pension fund.
