The Philippines’ diagnostic imaging market reached USD46 million in 2008

imaging devices markets in the
Philippines reveals that the market
reached USD46 million in 2008.
According to Clearstate’s biannual
tracking of demand trends in nearly
300 healthcare facilities across the
Philippines, ultrasound remains the
largest diagnostic imaging segment in
the country. Computed tomography
(CT) and radiography (X-ray) follow.

Clearstate’s study found over 2,000

ultrasound units installed in the
Philippines. There are nearly double
that number of X-ray units installed,
counting conventional, digital, and
mobile radiographies, as well as
fluoroscopy, mammography and surgical C-arms. There are also 235 CT units installed, along
with about 80 units of other diagnostic imaging modalities.

Clearstate’s study indicates a clear demand progression towards newer diagnostic imaging
technology. Multi-slice CT is now popular with only sporadic sales of single and dual slice
technology recently. Over a third of all MR units installed are 1.5T or higher. There is
increasing interest in digitising X-ray, particularly using computed radiography solutions that are
cheaper than fully digital radiography systems. Device distribution roughly follows hospital
concentrations, with Luzon accounting for the lion’s share of the installed base.

Siemens leads the market for diagnostic imaging devices in the Philippines, followed by GE,
Philips, Shimadzu and Toshiba, in that order. Siemens’ lead is strongest in the heavy metal
segments of MR, CT, nuclear medicine and cardiovascular X-ray, boosted by placements of
top-of-the-line CT technology as well as SPECT at leading private and university hospitals in
Metro Manila.
