A great weekend of bowls was
played last Saturday and Sunday
in perfect conditions.
On Saturday a social day was
held with players from Quilpie
and Blackall being mixed together
running the bar, Gary Whitfield

and recommendations to Council on best practice management of Social Housing. It is

In Memory of Florence June Kelly

On Friday March 18, a large
number of the Blackall community
gathered at the Uniting Church,
Blackall to farewell long time
resident Florence June Kelly,
better known as June.
June was born in Blackall on
September 16 1926, to Leslie and
Ada Kupfer. Leslie was a boundary
rider at Isis Downs at the time and
enjoyed a happy childhood there
with her brothers Ken, Jack and
Wallace and sisters Audrey and
Belva.
During those early years to
continue her education, June
lived for some time with her
grandmother Winifred Pattel
in Hawthorne Street, before
returning to Isis Downs where she
assisted her sister Belva with her
correspondence lessons.
On March 8 1945 June enlisted
with the Royal Australian Air Force
as an Aircraftwoman, with her
recruiting officer describing her
as ‘quiet and well mannered, well
groomed and full of enthusiasm’
and many life-long friendships
were formed during the ensuing
months.
On June’s return to Blackall
following her discharge from
the Air Force on September 20
1946, she commenced work at
the Jacolyn Salon with Mrs Mary
Williams where she plied her
expert dressmaking skills.
June soon met a young man,
Robert Francis Kelly. Bob and
June were married on November
15 1947 in St Patrick’s Catholic
Church, Blackall. They moved to
9 Daisy Street, which remained
their life long home which they
shared with their children Vivian,
Neil and Lewis.

under Tatt’s Hotel. June was very
much a homebody, but always at
the ready to help out whatever the
need and enjoyed having a cup of
tea with neighbours.
Bob had a keen love of gardening
both fruit and vegetables along
with glorious displays of flowers.
June was highly involved with
these and the prize winning entries
in the local Flower Shows was an
annual event.
June was a very active member
of the Returned Service League
Ladies’ Auxilliary, as treasurer
for many years as well as actively
helping with fundraising efforts,
participating in Anzac Day and
Remembrance Day activities and
placing crosses and poppies on
the war graves each Anzac Day.

A great sadness came over June’s
life in 1994 when her beloved
husband of 47 years passed away
suddenly. Together they had faced
so many of life’s challenges and
were now ready to relax and enjoy
the quieter life. However, in time,
June mastered her aching heart
and she continued to be an active
member of Blackall society.
She continued her keen
involvement with the Ladies
Auxiliary of the RSL (being
Treasurer for quite a few years),
the Thrift Shop, she played a
mean game of bowls, enjoyed the
Seniors mornings at the RSL hut
and loved her weekly shopping
trips down town especially to buy
that winning lotto or scratchie.
June was laid to rest in the war
ceremony with her husband who
was buried there exactly 17 years
before in a RSL ceremony with
poppies laid at the graveside.
