Case Study: Dream Cruises

Background on Dream Cruises

Dream Cruises is a company that organises holiday cruises and various events such as business
conventions aboard ships.

Until now they have kept their records on a card index system but have realised that it is time
that they moved over to a fully computerised database system. They have employed you to
build a fully working database system to handle their core business which is concerned with
the following areas:

• Customer records.
• Vessel (Ship) records.
• Organisation of cruises
• Organisation of events for clients.

Taken from an interview with Sharon Adego, booking clerk:

“A customer can be an individual or a person representing an organisation. If it is a person

representing an organisation we keep a note of the organisation. Our business spreads by word
of mouth within organisations so we might deal with various people from the same
organisation, from different departments for example. We always record a booking for an event
against a person”.

“A customer books a particular type of event, for example a dealer incentive cruise. We make
the initial booking for the type of event and then we either match this to an existing event or set
up a new event if there isn’t one to match. When we set up the event it is for a particular vessel
on a particular itinerary. An itinerary is a list of destinations. Once we have set up the event it
is given a number, which we tell the client. We then inform them of the details such as the ship
name, starting port and date”.

“We keep detailed information about the itinerary itself. We have to know the starting port and
the ending port with the dates and times of arrival and departure, the ports of call with arrival
times and departures. Obviously a particular port might be part of more than one itinerary. For
each port we also keep a record of the facilities that are on offer; for example casinos, hotels,
museums. Facilities are classified by type”.

Assignment
You are required to produce a report that addresses all of the following tasks:

Task 1 (30 marks)

Create an ER diagram (using UML notation) of the Dream Cruises system. Please state any
assumptions that you make.

Task 2 (15 marks)

Create a data dictionary for the Dream Cruises system. The template for the data dictionary is
presented in Lecture 3.

Task 3 (15 marks)

Create the relevant SQL CREATE TABLE statements for implementing the Dream Cruises
system in a DBMS of your choice (not MS Access). You should provide screen dumps to show
that the create statements have worked.

Task 4 (15 marks)

Discuss the population of the database tables for the Dream Cruises system (choice of data,
order of population, issues and resolutions and SQL used) supported by appropriate screen
dumps.

Task 5 (10 marks)

Create the SELECT statement for a query on at least one table that uses the AS, COUNT,
GROUP BY and ORDER BY clauses.
This should be supported by an explanation of the purpose the query may serve in the Dream
Cruises system (you will be penalised if you present more than one query). You should provide
a screen dump to show the output of the query.

Task 6 (10 marks)

Create a set of screen dumps showing all of the data in each table – the data must be ordered by
the primary key.

The remaining 5 Marks will be awarded for the presentation of the report.
