1. Pineapples Boutique
Hale‘iwa has become quite
the shopping destination,
and Pineapples Boutique is
stepping it up even more.
Located where Bali Moon’s
clothing store used to be,
Pineapples opened in May and
was hopping with shoppers
when I stopped by. It’s mostly
women’s clothing, with an
emphasis on relaxed, but
stylish, dresses and tops, as
well as tons of jewelry and
accessories. There’s also a
small rack with some men’s
shirts. The size range (extra-
extra small to 3X) and price
range (the highest items
are $240) that owners Geri
Berger and Sandra Tierney
have on offer mean there’s

2. Fishloaves
After eight years in New York
City—gaining experience in
everything from the Garment
District to high-end jewelry
companies—Farida Ong
returned to Hawai‘i to open
her own boutique. “I wanted
a small, neighborhood place
with a ‘modern and vintage’
feel,” she says. At Fishloaves,
the new Aloha Tower outpost of Red
Bamboo, which has a flagship in Kailua.

ago, she specializes in simple,
versatile women’s clothing,
and a few men’s shirts as well,
in the affordable price range
of $6.50 to $40. “It’s not about
wearing what’s hot in New
York or L.A., it’s what flatters
you and what will work for
Hawai‘i,” Ong says. Her
customers are particularly
fond of the Piko 1988 line. “It’s
good quality, a good value,”

3. Tara’s Secret Closet
When consignment store
The Clothes Chick moved
to Kapahulu, Tara Phillips
took the space over from her
former boss and opened Tara’s
Secret Closet. Phillips has
plenty of experience in the
business; in Austin, Texas,
she managed an upscale
consignment store. Her
store offers gently used and
sometimes even never-worn
women’s clothing in sizes 0
to 3X, with prices under $10.
You’ll also find some higher-
priced designer shoes and
bags, and glass cases with
costume jewelry. Look for
brands such as Ann Taylor,
Bebe, Coach and Stuart
Weitzman. “I carry a little bit
of everything,” she says, “from
business wear to casual,
and I’ll have formal wear at
the holidays.” She’s always
