Mahlatse has spent 4 yrs with a leading construction company, G-LTA (3 as a student and 1 as a site
engineer). He worked as section engineer for a R40 million section on a R190 million Civils Project, the
Sishen Expansion Project at the Sishen Mine in Kathu in 2006. He then spent 3 yrs with a leading Civil
and Structural engineering consulting company within the petrochemical and mining industry (LB
Engineers). He then worked on several water supply scheme projects including the Ohlanga Pump
Station in Ethekwini and the Thune Dam project in Botswana as a Structural Engineer with Aurecon.
Mahlatse also completed his Graduate Diploma in Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand
(Dec 2010) majoring in Structural Engineering and Project Management.

Engineer

The project entails the tender and construction design phases for the 100 Ml additional modules for the
Activated Sludge Waste Water Treatment Works in Sebokeng as the present works are operating beyond
capacity.

Personal responsibilities include:


• Conceptual design of the modules for the treatment works
• Exploration of different alternatives
• Hydraulic calculations and design for the feasible alternative

May 2010 to Jan 2011 Thune Dam: Botswana
Structural Engineer

The dam construction is clay core earthfill embarkment 34.5 m high and 1633 m long. The gross storage
capacity is 90 Ml. The central spillway comprises 115m long mass gravity ogee weir with retaining walls on
either side including the intake works.

Personal responsibilities included:


• Structural design of the 30 m high intake structure
• Structural design of the apron slabs downstream of the spillway
• Structural design of the spillway crest
• Determination of structural design loads and requirements
• Early age thermal cracking design and detailing for the above

May 2010 to June 2010 Massingir Dam, Mozambique


Structural Engineer

The 48m high Massingir dam completed in 1977 displayed major defect due to high pore pressures at the
toe form the onset. The top section of the outlet structure burst open on the 22nd may 2008 due to the dam
operating above capacity. The project entailed the investigation into the failure that occurred in 2008.
Remedial works included the replacement of a concrete pipe section with a steel bifurcation.

Personal responsibilities included:


• Structural analysis and design of bifurcation pipe and outlet works’ concrete sections using finite
elements methods.
• Compiling of design reports

Feb 2010 to April 2010 Ohlanga Pump Station


Structural Engineer

The project involved the design of a DN 1250 outfall sewer, approximately 7850m long, a reinforced
concrete pumpstation and a DN 560 rising main approximately 1000m long. The project also included the
design of connection valve chambers, manholes, road and stream crossings as well as wastewater
treatment works.

Personal responsibilities included:


• Structural design, design review as well as proposing structurally efficient designs taking into
consideration the hydraulic effects.
• Determination of structure design loads and requirements
• Structural detailing
• Client liaison

Oct 2008 to Jan 2010 Medupi Connection Design, Medupi


Project Coordinator and structural engineer

The project entailed the connection designs for the Medupi Powerstation’s Boilerhouses.

• Dissemination of incoming project information and distribution of work

This project entailed the design a new Oxygen plant in the SASOL Secunda plant.
Personal responsibilities included:

Phase 1
• Appointing a surveyor to perform a landscape survey. Assisting surveyor in meeting plant safety
requirements as well as required safety nominations.
• Oversee the production of drawings of existing structures and underground services.
• Responsible for final drawings produced for the survey and existing services within the plant.
Phase 2

• Perform pile, and pile cap designs for the 25m Chiller tower structure, Noisehood structure and the
various vertical and horizontal vessel structures
• Perform the designs for the 25-m concrete Chiller tower
• Perform designs for the structural steel Noisehood structure and lifting plan design for the
removable roof structure.

Junior Engineering manager and Structural engineer

As a junior engineering manager, I attended site briefing meetings, perform cost estimates for the company
to perform the works. Upon subsequent employment, my responsibilities included the following:

R40 million on a R190 million rand project.

• Running numerous sites including the Jig Plant, Dewatering plant, Control room and the pipe racks.
• Ordering of materials required to do the works including long lead items
• Monitoring and chasing of the construction programme
• Management of the construction team, foremen and the workers.

• Plan large pours and coordinate and motivate construction team.
