For National Entrepreneurship Week at PCM we conducted a PCM Entrepreneurship TV program where we filmed local
student entrepreneurs today along with a former teacher-turned-entrepreneur!!
We had lots of cameras, script on a
screen, etc. It went really well.

The filmed DVD will be shown at the

high school next week. Also, the
journalism department covered this
event and wrote about us for
upcoming issues for the local
communities to view and read!! The
school has never done a filming event like this; at times it was challenging
but hopefully in the future it will be well remembered & received!

MANY LEADERS IN MICHIGAN -
I’ve Got A Better Idea! Challenge - Sponsored by Marvin N. Pichla, Executive Director, ThumbWorks!
Marlette, Michigan - On Thursday, February 24th student teams from seven Thumb-area schools made history, as
participants in the first annual “I’ve Got A Better idea! Challenge.” The inspiration for this school to school challenge
came from the Thumb Boost adult Entrepreneur pitch competition, but with less than a month to prepare these young
people not only stepped up to the plate, they hit a home run. The ingenuity and teamwork of these students was
amazing; and the problem solving and business skills they honed will better prepare them for the realities of today’s
business world.
All Thumb-area high schools were invited to get involved in the National Entrepreneurship week through participation
with this pitch competition. Each school was given up to ten minutes to present their unique new business/product, new
learning/school improvement, business expansion, or community development idea. The judges asked questions after
each presentation and gave suggestions on what to think about when carrying their concepts forward. After all the
presentations were completed, the judges reviewed the ideas and considered their uniqueness, involvement of
representatives from all high school class levels, ability to implement and/or replicate the idea in other areas, and cost.

The judges included Diane Durance, executive director of Great Lakes

Entrepreneur’s Quest in Lansing; Andrea Fisher, president of Princing &
Ewend in Saginaw; Kevin Goff, meteorologist with WJRT TV 12 in Flint;
and Joe McCulloch, procurement specialist with Macomb Regional PTAC
in Warren.

The first place team was Marlette, which presented an idea for a
walking/exercise program for young students to help prevent/reverse
obesity and to promote a lifetime of healthy living. The grand prize is a
guest visit to Marlette High School by NASA scientist and author Dr. Jack Bacon on April 14th.

Ubly High School received the second-place nod, and they received the
opportunity to take four students and two chaperones to the National
Entrepreneurship Education Forum in Cincinnati, Ohio, this November.
They presented an idea for a new automotive related product, of which
they are planning to pursue patent protection.

Having these students come together as a team and cooperate on a

hands on project of this nature gave them a very rich and valuable
educational experience; with our goal being to host this challenge and
expand it to more schools every year.

To further promote and inform the state’s legislators, organizations from across the state focused on entrepreneurship
and innovation education, gathered at the North Dakota State Capitol on February 23, 2011. This event, sponsored in
part by Marketplace for Kids, featured not only organizations providing outstanding support to entrepreneurs and
innovators, but also those individuals they have been working side by side with to encourage, guide, and promote.

Entrepreneurship in North Dakota is Alive, Thriving, and Expanding! It’s a great time to be a young
entrepreneur in North Dakota! Marketplace for Kids, North Dakota’s premier entrepreneurship program for students in
grades 3 through middle school, recently announced a new initiative to their nationally-recognized program.

The new Innovation in Art and Literature, A Youth Initiative, is a collaborative effort between Beautiful Women Of
North DakotaTM and Marketplace for Kids, to inspire creative art and writing expressed through wonderful stories. The
lesson plan, developed by Marketplace for Kids, combined with tools to assist students in sharpening their interview,
writing, and presentation skills, developed by Beautiful Women of North Dakota,TM encourages youth to follow their
theme – true beauty comes from within! The lesson plan, added to the popular Marketplace for Kids Learning Guide,
walks students through the steps of researching, interviewing, and writing their story, and producing the accompanying
artwork. Stories written and showcased at a Marketplace for Kids Education Day will be submitted to Beautiful Women
Of North DakotaTM for an opportunity to be published by Kototama Publishing.

But, there’s more! Not only was a new initiative added to the Learning Guide, the Adventures in Agriculture & Using Our
Renewable Resources section has been expanded! Now included is information on youth gardening, community gardens,
school gardens, and farmers markets.

logo, slogan, start-up budget, business cards, flyers, and brochure (if the student
business was a restaurant, they had to create a menu). The last phase of the project was to create a PowerPoint
presentation and orally present your business to the class. All students project were displayed on tri-fold poster board
and placed the our school media center to viewed during National Entrepreneurship Week and for our school open
house by parents, staff, students and local visitors.

McDowell County Entrepreneurship Day Eighty seven high school and middle
school students celebrated National Entrepreneurship Week in McDowell County on
February 24, 2010. McDowell Technical Community College-Small Business Center,
McDowell County Public Schools and NC REAL sponsored the event. Alex Garcia, owner
of Yogi Bear Campground, encouraged students to think entrepreneurially and never
give up. Working in teams, students assessed their community’s needs, and their own
interests to create business ideas. At the end of the workshop the students presented
their business proposals to a panel of community leaders who awarded a prize for the
best enterprise. On the local McDowell high school radio program “Anything Goes”, the student broadcaster, who had
participated in the Youth Entrepreneurship Day event, used the entire radio spot to talk about the Entrepreneurship Day
activity, what he learned, and how much fun everyone had.

Arizona - Schools Work Together via DECA

To help celebrate and participate in Entrepreneurship Week, La Joya
Community High School students created ceramic soup bowls which will be
auctioned off at a local civic center. The center, called Westgate City Center,
is one of the premier shopping districts in West Phoenix due to its proximity
to University of Phoenix Stadium (home of the NFL Arizona Cardinals football
team) and the Glendale Arena,( home of the NHL Arizona Coyotes hockey
team). The students, who are members of the school's DECA program in
Avondale, AZ, are also working with two other DECA programs at different
schools. The ceramic bowls were designed and are painted by the students
with each bowl truly reflecting their personalities. Public city officials and
sports dignitaries have also been invited to create bowls for the auction. Proceeds will benefit Kids Café,
http://www.firstfoodbank.org/kidscafe.html, of the St. Mary’s Food Bank, a Phoenix based charity organization. DeVry
University, is sponsoring any supplies needed for the students creations and is working with Westgate in the promotion
of this event which will be held in late March.

EVIE ZEREFOS - Freedom Enterprises, Inc. SMYRNA, Delaware

Ms. Zerefos has been a member of the business community in both New Castle County and Kent County, Delaware for
17 years. Her many business ideas/ opportunities have been developed and created by finding and filling needs in the
community.

Institute and its programs by visiting www.delawaremoneyschool.com,

Ms. Zerefos’ first business was in Newport by the GM plant. She noticed more and more people
looking for daycare outside of the traditional 9 to 5 hours, providing the community with a center
that ran parallel with shift hours of the plant. My father brought our family to this country in 1980
without speaking a word of English. The one thing my father had was dedication and motivation to
succeed in this Land of Opportunity. And with that Entrepreneurial Spirit, he raised his family to
work hard and believe in ourselves. I, too, believe that if you believe in yourself and are willing to
go the extra mile, the sky is the limit. When I graduated from high school, I was sure college had
nothing to offer me. I wanted to have my own business and be my own boss. My father helped me
purchase my first child care center when I was 18 years old. The center/business was extremely successful, but I know I
had limited potential for business growth unless I received some additional knowledge. It was with knowledge that I
gained the power to achieve my goals. (continued on the Honor Roll website)

Joseph Cirulli - Gainesville Health and Fitness, GAINESVILLE, Florida -

An incubator for creating leaders and promoting health and wellness locally, nationally, and internationally, Gainesville
Health and Fitness daily lives up to its lofty vision to be one of the greatest businesses FOR the world!

addition, from 1996 on, he shares ownership of three rehabilitation centers with North Florida
Regional Medical Center. Joe believes that the success of his enterprise is directly related to a true
understanding of “why we do what we do.” According to Joe, a business does not become
successful if its purpose is to make money. As a matter of fact, he believes that’s why so many go
out of business. The purpose, he says, has to be something much greater. (continued on the Honor Roll website)

Anthony Delmedico , Little Green Money Machine, LAKE MARY, Florida - Anthony Delmedico,
leads the way in developing revolutionary educational products that build a foundation for kid’s business startups.

Nominated for the National HONOR ROLL of American Entrepreneurs by: Del Visionaries is a community and a
movement whose goal is to educate and help our youth as well as adults in learning and experiencing
entrepreneurship. The goal is to help people become more self-reliant, self-confident and financially independent. The
Little Green Money Machine book and business stand is a part of this goal.

As a boy, Anthony Delmedico dreamed of one day owning his own big business. But in his single parent,
blue-collar family, there wasn't enough money for him to attend college, let alone launch a business. So
he started kid businesses that had minimal start-up costs, but could still earn him money. Along the way,
he taught himself the entrepreneurial skills he would need to start larger, more successful businesses.

But Anthony never forgot his dream of someday being his own boss. His entrepreneurial spirit has never stopped calling.
In 1999, from the basement of his home, he launched a construction business. That business, Abelard Construction, is
now a multi-million dollar company with over 50 employees and offices in several Midwest states. Plans are currently
underway to take the company public. And now, Anthony’s insight, abilities and initiative have lead him to launch the
Little Green Money Machine interactive learning system, which will help young people accomplish what he did: to
become a self-reliant, self-confident, financially independent entrepreneur. (continued on the Honor Roll website)

Laketa Dumas - RU REady 4 BIZness, DETROIT, Michigan - RU Ready 4 BIZness is an exceptional

program. The founder, Laketa Dumas and I, had the pleasure of meeting four years ago, during the initial stage of the
program’s development. Since then, the program has received insurmountable success and national recognition from
several prominent organizations. More importantly, she taken a group of disenfranchised students living in
impoverished communities and taught them how to build global businesses. The subject matter and experience the
students are exposed to is on a collegiate platform. The entrepreneurship pedagogy is innovative and invigorating,
definitely the first of its kind. The students’ love of and dedication to the program is incredible! The program builds
students’ self-esteem, empowerment, and leadership and encourages them to strive for success and explore
entrepreneurship as a future career.

Nominated for the National HONOR ROLL of American Entrepreneurs

by: Marcus Garvey Academy: As the principal at Marcus Garvey
Academy, it was my great pleasure to have the opportunity to work
with Ms. Dumas. Our goal is to bring the Entrepreneurship Project and
implement the RU Ready 4 BIZness curriculum to more schools. Please
feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

Ms. Dumas is an exceptional leader and visionary. She developed a

joint venture between two dissimilar schools, one a special education
trainable facility and the other a general education academy. Ms.
Dumas has developed the first inclusionary entrepreneurship program
for DPS, where non-disabled and disabled students work side-by-side in
developing their business ventures.

We are so honored and fortunate to have an individual like Ms. Dumas volunteering her time, energy, resources and
commitment to the students at Marcus Garvey Academy. The fortitude embedded in her has infused the students’
entrepreneurship spirit. This program came at a crucial time, when DPS needed a paradigm shift in promoting
innovation and offering alternative career options for students who may not attend college. (continued on the Honor

Michael Savage, Red Metal Box, Lillington, North Carolina - Michael Savage is the Founder of Red
Metal Box, Inc., a North Carolina based technology firm with a focus in mobile application development as well as web
site design and development.

Nominated for the National HONOR ROLL of American Entrepreneurs by: North Carolina REAL. The Hop on the BUS!
High School Business Plan Committee coordinates opportunities for students to explore business ideas and then
transfer the ideas to a business plan. Students may participate as an individual or as a team. The competition consists of
three rounds and the top ten finalists are invited to do a business pitch by video. The committee coordinates a fall and
spring competition.

Michael Savage started the business early in his life at the age of sixteen. At the
time he did not know what entrepreneurship was, but by the time he was
seventeen he quickly learned that owning and operating his own business was
something he wanted to pursue. At that point he started reaching out to different
people and began building web sites for local businesses. Michael was the
President of DECA his senior year in high school that’s when his DECA advisor
suggested to him that he enter into a state-wide business plan competition. He put
together a business plan for his somewhat established web design business and
submitted it. Before he knew it, he was standing in Greensboro waiting to see what place he took in the competition.
Michael took home the second place prize of $500, all the capital he needed to start his new company. From that point,
there was only one thing on his mind and that was business and the possibilities it had.

Michael has been in business for the past four years and plans to continue using his business to help other businesses
get the most out of their marketing and technology budget. (Continued on the Honor Roll website)

A Job is ...
work that needs to be done, (meaning it has a meaningful purpose)
that you can do, (meaning that you have the skills, capacity)
and someone will pay you to do it. (meaning that there is a customer for
this work...a source of income to pay you)
Self-Employment - When you think of businesses in the US do you realize the following about the number of
people who are working for someone else versus being self-employed?

 According to the latest available US Small Business Administration data, in 2008 there were 27,281,452
businesses in the US.

 Over twenty-one million (21,351,320) of these have only one employee - themselves - the
owner/entrepreneur

 And another five million plus businesses (5,295,000) had 20 or fewer employees.

 That leaves 635,132 businesses with more than 20 employees, employing all the other private sector
workers.

Unemployment - When you hear about creating jobs as the "biggest" priority of our country, how many are
employed versus how many unemployed? Does entrepreneurship education make a difference, both now
and for the future?

First, let's know about the numbers of people who are unemployed versus employed...

Year Civilian Civilian Employed Unemployed Not in

Source: U S Gov. Bureau of Labor Statistics (Numbers in thousands)

1 The population figures are not adjusted for seasonal variation.

NOTE: Revisions to population controls and other changes can affect the comparability of labor force levels over time. In recent
years, updated population controls have been introduced annually with the release of January data. Additional information is online
at www.bls.gov/cps/documentation.htm#pop.

WE WONDER .... So should we (as entrepreneurship educators) wonder how many of the 14,825,000 unemployed
persons might be able to be self-reliant if their education experiences had helped them find "Work that needs to be
done, that they have the skills and capacity to do, and someone would pay them to do it" ....such as customers! Also,
what about the 83,941,000 "not in the labor force".

The entrepreneurs of tomorrow are in our Schools Today!

WHAT ARE YOUR CHOICES?

The Consortium for Entrepreneurship Education believes that entrepreneurs "become" through the
experiences of their lives. Thus one or our core values is that "Entrepreneurship education is a lifelong
learning process that involves all levels of education and training."

But how.... The Consortium has published National Content Standards that include 403 Performance
Indicators that were created by focus groups of entrepreneurs who indicated what knowledge, skills and
attitudes were important for their success http://www.entre-ed.org/Standards_Toolkit/ The mere size
of the list tells you that it cannot be the foundation for any single course. Rather it is used to support the
content of many different programs at different levels of education. Throughout education students can
be developing an understanding of how to find opportunities and developing skills to be self-sufficient.

What do you think about making your own job ...

We suggest each person consider their individual answers to each question and then discuss them with the group.
 How do you find work that needs to be done?
 How many different job tasks can you personally do?
 For which kinds of skills or tasks are people normally paid most?
 Which of these many possible tasks do you most enjoy doing?
 How and where do you find paying customers? What tools help you locate them?
 During the recession most large businesses have not been hiring and many individuals have lost jobs. Do you
think more people have started businesses since 2008 so that there are now more businesses in the nation?
 How can so many single person business operations exist?
 Do you think that any of these single person businesses will grow to the point that they will hire additional
staff members?
 Does the above data help you understand when we say that the USA is a country of small businesses that we
really are that? Is any of this data a new revelation to you?
 Do most American’s think that our employer base looks more like this small business segment of the
employment community or are big businesses all they see?
 What does it take to create a job?
 If we had the choice of reducing the business tax rate or the personal income tax rate which of these choices
do you think would help to create the most jobs? Why do you think the way you do to come to this
conclusion?
 What would it take to have all students in the education pipeline of the USA gain entrepreneurial Skills?
 Would this improve our economic condition?
 What are the first steps that should be taken in order to make it happen?

HOW COULD YOU USE THE CONCEPTS IN THIS DISCUSSION TO START A BLOG ABOUT THE VALUE OF
