MANY LEADERS IN MICHIGAN -
I’ve Got A Better Idea! Challenge - Sponsored by Marvin N. Pichla, Executive Director, ThumbWorks!
Marlette, Michigan - On Thursday, February 24th student teams from seven Thumb-area schools made history, as
participants in the first annual “I’ve Got A Better idea! Challenge.” The inspiration for this school to school challenge
came from the Thumb Boost adult Entrepreneur pitch competition, but with less than a month to prepare these young
people not only stepped up to the plate, they hit a home run. The ingenuity and teamwork of these students was
amazing; and the problem solving and business skills they honed will better prepare them for the realities of today’s
business world.
All Thumb-area high schools were invited to get involved in the National Entrepreneurship week through participation
with this pitch competition. Each school was given up to ten minutes to present their unique new business/product, new
learning/school improvement, business expansion, or community development idea. The judges asked questions after
each presentation and gave suggestions on what to think about when carrying their concepts forward. After all the
presentations were completed, the judges reviewed the ideas and considered their uniqueness, involvement of
representatives from all high school class levels, ability to implement and/or replicate the idea in other areas, and cost.
The first place team was Marlette, which presented an idea for a
walking/exercise program for young students to help prevent/reverse
obesity and to promote a lifetime of healthy living. The grand prize is a
guest visit to Marlette High School by NASA scientist and author Dr. Jack Bacon on April 14th.
Ubly High School received the second-place nod, and they received the
opportunity to take four students and two chaperones to the National
Entrepreneurship Education Forum in Cincinnati, Ohio, this November.
They presented an idea for a new automotive related product, of which
they are planning to pursue patent protection.

Marketplace for Kids has fostered a culture of entrepreneurship among the youth of North Dakota for over 20
years. During this time, thousands of students have been exposed to entrepreneurship, when many said they were too
young. To recognize the efforts of a state focused on entrepreneurship, the Honorable Jack Dalrymple, Governor of
North Dakota, along with the future entrepreneurs took the time to officially recognize Entrepreneurship Week,
February 19-26, 2011, in North Dakota. Students who have participated in the Marketplace for Kids program, as well as
those eagerly looking forward to participating this year, gathered at the North Dakota State Capitol to meet Governor
Dalrymple, and witness the signing of the proclamation.
To further promote and inform the state’s legislators, organizations from across the state focused on entrepreneurship
and innovation education, gathered at the North Dakota State Capitol on February 23, 2011. This event, sponsored in
part by Marketplace for Kids, featured not only organizations providing outstanding support to entrepreneurs and
innovators, but also those individuals they have been working side by side with to encourage, guide, and promote.

Ms. Zerefos has been a member of the business community in both New Castle County and Kent County, Delaware for
17 years. Her many business ideas/ opportunities have been developed and created by finding and filling needs in the
community.
Ms. Zerefos’ first business was in Newport by the GM plant. She noticed more and more people
looking for daycare outside of the traditional 9 to 5 hours, providing the community with a center
that ran parallel with shift hours of the plant. My father brought our family to this country in 1980
without speaking a word of English. The one thing my father had was dedication and motivation to
succeed in this Land of Opportunity. And with that Entrepreneurial Spirit, he raised his family to
work hard and believe in ourselves. I, too, believe that if you believe in yourself and are willing to
go the extra mile, the sky is the limit. When I graduated from high school, I was sure college had
nothing to offer me. I wanted to have my own business and be my own boss. My father helped me
purchase my first child care center when I was 18 years old. The center/business was extremely successful, but I know I
had limited potential for business growth unless I received some additional knowledge. It was with knowledge that I
gained the power to achieve my goals. (continued on the Honor Roll website)
An incubator for creating leaders and promoting health and wellness locally, nationally, and internationally, Gainesville
Health and Fitness daily lives up to its lofty vision to be one of the greatest businesses FOR the world!
Nominated for the National HONOR ROLL of American Entrepreneurs by: The Academy of Entrepreneurship at
Buchholz High School is a four-year program for students interested in entrepreneurship,
marketing, and business management. Our curriculum is project-based featuring teamwork,
relevant and contextual teaching, technology training and work-based learning. The focus of our
program is to prepare students for higher education and eventual entrepreneurial careers in a
wide variety of fields, since entrepreneurs are everywhere.
Established in 1988 by Joseph (Joe) Cirulli, Gainesville Health and Fitness is recognized globally as a
leader in the fitness industry. GHF serves more than 28,000 members at three fitness centers . In
addition, from 1996 on, he shares ownership of three rehabilitation centers with North Florida
Regional Medical Center. Joe believes that the success of his enterprise is directly related to a true
understanding of “why we do what we do.” According to Joe, a business does not become
successful if its purpose is to make money. As a matter of fact, he believes that’s why so many go
out of business. The purpose, he says, has to be something much greater. (continued on the Honor Roll website)

Anthony Delmedico , Little Green Money Machine, LAKE MARY, Florida - Anthony Delmedico,
leads the way in developing revolutionary educational products that build a foundation for kid’s business startups.
Nominated for the National HONOR ROLL of American Entrepreneurs by: Del Visionaries is a community and a
movement whose goal is to educate and help our youth as well as adults in learning and experiencing
entrepreneurship. The goal is to help people become more self-reliant, self-confident and financially independent. The
Little Green Money Machine book and business stand is a part of this goal.
As a boy, Anthony Delmedico dreamed of one day owning his own big business. But in his single parent,
blue-collar family, there wasn't enough money for him to attend college, let alone launch a business. So
he started kid businesses that had minimal start-up costs, but could still earn him money. Along the way,
he taught himself the entrepreneurial skills he would need to start larger, more successful businesses.
But Anthony never forgot his dream of someday being his own boss. His entrepreneurial spirit has never stopped calling.
In 1999, from the basement of his home, he launched a construction business. That business, Abelard Construction, is
now a multi-million dollar company with over 50 employees and offices in several Midwest states. Plans are currently
underway to take the company public. And now, Anthony’s insight, abilities and initiative have lead him to launch the
Little Green Money Machine interactive learning system, which will help young people accomplish what he did: to
become a self-reliant, self-confident, financially independent entrepreneur. (continued on the Honor Roll website)
We are so honored and fortunate to have an individual like Ms. Dumas volunteering her time, energy, resources and
commitment to the students at Marcus Garvey Academy. The fortitude embedded in her has infused the students’

innovation and offering alternative career options for students who may not attend college. (continued on the Honor

High School Business Plan Committee coordinates opportunities for students to explore business ideas and then
transfer the ideas to a business plan. Students may participate as an individual or as a team. The competition consists of
three rounds and the top ten finalists are invited to do a business pitch by video. The committee coordinates a fall and
spring competition.
Michael Savage started the business early in his life at the age of sixteen. At the
time he did not know what entrepreneurship was, but by the time he was
seventeen he quickly learned that owning and operating his own business was
something he wanted to pursue. At that point he started reaching out to different
people and began building web sites for local businesses. Michael was the
President of DECA his senior year in high school that’s when his DECA advisor
suggested to him that he enter into a state-wide business plan competition. He put
together a business plan for his somewhat established web design business and
submitted it. Before he knew it, he was standing in Greensboro waiting to see what place he took in the competition.
Michael took home the second place prize of $500, all the capital he needed to start his new company. From that point,
there was only one thing on his mind and that was business and the possibilities it had.
Michael has been in business for the past four years and plans to continue using his business to help other businesses
get the most out of their marketing and technology budget. (Continued on the Honor Roll website)

MICHAEL HOLTHOUSE - Lemonade Day, HOUSTON, Texas -
Michael‘s vision is to see 1,000,000 new businesses open a single day in cities across America. To realize his goal, he
speaks passionately about the program to organizations in Houston and across the nation to encourage community and
business leaders, educators, parents, and children to get involved.
Nominated for the National HONOR ROLL of American Entrepreneurs by: Prepared 4 Life. The mission of Prepared 4
Life (P4L) is to unlock the entrepreneurial potential of youth by engaging them in positive, life-changing programs. P4L is
reaching youth one child at a time by teaching them the nuts and bolts of the entrepreneurial process. Our goal is to
build a society of economically independent individuals, who also are engaged, community-minded citizens.
Michael Holthouse is the creator of Lemonade Day and the Holthouse Foundation
for Kids. Michael is best known in the business world as founder and President of
Paranet, Inc, a computer network services company. In just six years, Michael
expanded Paranet to 27 offices and 1600 employees with revenues in excess of $100
million. He ultimately sold the company to Sprint in 1997.Michael took his success
and decided to spend the rest of his life dedicated to helping at-risk youth. First, he
embarked on a worldwide learning adventure. By visiting communities around the
globe, Michael realized that successful individuals and communities possess a common trait – an entrepreneurial spirit.
After eight years of research, including the evaluation of many children’s programs, Michael created the Holthouse
Foundation for Kids to help youth from low-income families acquire the skills they need to
become successful adults. Major achievements by the Holthouse Foundation for Kids
include supporting Boys and Girls Club with a $1million gift after the collapse of its title
sponsor, Enron. He also teamed up with the “After School All-Stars” to support innovative
after-school programming in Houston.
Michael’s vision to revolutionize the way kids learn was further enhanced when, at the
urging of his daughter, they created a lemonade stand together. During the course of that day, Michael taught her
about creating a plan, the benefits of location, and paying back her investor. He realized that through the simple act of
opening a lemonade stand, basic financial literacy lessons can be taught. (Continued on the Honor Roll website)
A Job is ...
work that needs to be done, (meaning it has a meaningful purpose)
that you can do, (meaning that you have the skills, capacity)
and someone will pay you to do it. (meaning that there is a customer for
this work...a source of income to pay you)
Self-Employment - When you think of businesses in the US do you realize the following about the number of
people who are working for someone else versus being self-employed?
According to the latest available US Small Business Administration data, in 2008 there were 27,281,452
businesses in the US.
Over twenty-one million (21,351,320) of these have only one employee - themselves - the
owner/entrepreneur
And another five million plus businesses (5,295,000) had 20 or fewer employees.
That leaves 635,132 businesses with more than 20 employees, employing all the other private sector
workers.

Unemployment - When you hear about creating jobs as the "biggest" priority of our country, how many are
employed versus how many unemployed? Does entrepreneurship education make a difference, both now
and for the future?
First, let's know about the numbers of people who are unemployed versus employed...
WE WONDER .... So should we (as entrepreneurship educators) wonder how many of the 14,825,000 unemployed
persons might be able to be self-reliant if their education experiences had helped them find "Work that needs to be
done, that they have the skills and capacity to do, and someone would pay them to do it" ....such as customers! Also,
what about the 83,941,000 "not in the labor force".
The Consortium for Entrepreneurship Education believes that entrepreneurs "become" through the
experiences of their lives. Thus one or our core values is that "Entrepreneurship education is a lifelong
learning process that involves all levels of education and training."
But how.... The Consortium has published National Content Standards that include 403 Performance
Indicators that were created by focus groups of entrepreneurs who indicated what knowledge, skills and
attitudes were important for their success http://www.entre-ed.org/Standards_Toolkit/ The mere size
of the list tells you that it cannot be the foundation for any single course. Rather it is used to support the
content of many different programs at different levels of education. Throughout education students can
be developing an understanding of how to find opportunities and developing skills to be self-sufficient.
HOW COULD YOU USE THE CONCEPTS IN THIS DISCUSSION TO START A BLOG ABOUT THE VALUE OF
ENTREPRENEURSHIP EDUCATION?
