Reflection on Dr. Condoleezza Rice’s Speech

Guoyu Lin

The Real Role of U.S.

Today, former U. S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice gave an impressive speech

at Miami University. Dr. Rice served in two important positions in recent as the

national security adviser and secretary of state. She played a very critical role in

developing the administration’s counter-terrorism policies, especially during the

anti-Iraq war.

In the very beginning, she mentioned about her early life as a college student. It

was definitely a good place to share her college stories. From her stories, we knew

that even like a great person like Dr. Rice, used to have a period of time struggling

with the classes she didn’t like in her college, however she still exceeded at last.

Everyone needs to find what he or she interested in. Later she became a specialist

on the Soviet Union. At that time, the Cold War was still going on between U.S. and

Soviet Union. “Her special knowledge of Soviet Union and Eastern Europe made her

a valuable consultant to the federal government.” (Cooper, 2011) It was her special

knowledge that made her irreplaceable and critical in her early political career.

When she became a special assistant to President Bush and later the secretary of

State, she was no longer a junior college girl who kept worrying about her future.

Nowadays, college students are always asking the same question: “how can I to

make myself more valuable? “ Tonight, Dr. Rice gave the answer.

She put most of her speech on talking about the role of United States in

international affairs. Having served as national security adviser and secretary of

state after 9.11, her opinions are aggressive. She indicated that the U.S. policies on

international affair changed dramatically after 9.11, especially the attitude to

terrorism. United State will no longer stand apart and tolerate terrorism. Dr. Rice

said it would be U.S. responsibility to protect people at home and abroad from

terrorism. Indeed, many things changed after 9.11. American citizens were shocked

by the attack of terrorists and those heartbreaking images; soon they realized that

the world is not as peaceful as they thought. For a long time after the crash of the

Soviet Union, both American citizens and their government thought there were no

longer any threat to them, however, in fact just as Dr. Rice said, the threats that

U.S. is facing are not from the powerful but from those weak dictated nations. The

role of U.S. is becoming a guardian of world’s peace and order.

Although most of the audiences showed their respects to Dr. Rice, stood up and

paused for her, there is still a question in my mind: What U.S. will bring to the

world? This nation showed its most aggressive face to the world after 9.11 and

triggered the anti-terrorism war. After months of pouring bombs and bullets to

Afghanistan and Iraq, the U.S. army occupied these two countries. The years of war

didn’t solve any problem but pushed U.S. into a very embarrassing situation. Being

a world’s policeman or trying to change other nation in the way it prefers is

obviously not welcomed by the world. The so-called international order should be

decided by all the nations together, not by Washington D.C.
