As you will see, our observations pointed out to some specific aspects of e-news paper and its
various kinds of advantages, and disadvantages that readers faced not only in the quality of the
news but more emphasize on technical features of these sites. We tried to find out the features
that really amassing that readers likings and the problems that annoy us while reading. We tried
to compare our theoretical knowledge with these website, tried to understand these websites and
most importantly we did a survey on what people think about e-newspapers in Bangladesh. And
we can say we confidently reached more than 74 peoples and counting. Through this
assignment we tried to explore these aspects to a certain extent. This assignment really helped us
to know the information system terms more practically.

Executive Summary:

There was a time when people start reading news paper. Because news papers are full of
4
excitement. It is full of recent develops. It follows up of our surroundings. When newspapers
gone global out of your surroundings, it was starting saying about the global news and became
more powerful. Then time passed, many days years have been passed then new news medium
has came like a miracle has came in the history of man kind, miracle that changed some use of
words. It’s not about your surroundings anymore it’s now about global, now days you don't
expect recent news and its follow-up you want instant update of what is happening in the darkest
corner of the world. And it’s all possible is because now a days we have newspapers on online.

But still newspaper on online was not that much excitement to me. Until a new kind of news
papers have came in to the society. And the idea is called being social. What we do when we
read news? We just don't read. We share it with our surroundings. But this social world changes
a lot of things here. This social concept enables us to interact with those people that read this
news. In-spite of being limited within the surroundings in terms of sharing the news we do in
style and passion we share things with millions of peoples those who read the same news. After
reading we thing by ourselves, then we agree and disagree, we debate on the topic, we focus new
thinking that might include in the news we ourselves become a journalist of our own. Isn't it
great when a readers posing so much information that isn't even included in the original news?

But is it the same when you thing of Bangladesh prospective? Did these newspapers maintain the
same standards that the world is? Did we get instant news? Did our readers are that much
cooperative that we saw in foreign newspapers?

Well that is all about our term paper. In this term paper we tried to solve the mysteries of this
answers. We ask ourselves, we asked you, we ask peoples who are elite in this virtual

community of Bangladesh. We analyzed and tried our best to answer those questions and find the
situation. And we recommended what we feel is needed.

Introduction

The history of online news paper is not a new in Bangladesh. It’s been more then 10 years the
5
online news papers are getting popular day by day slowly. Online news papers came with lots of
excitement and prospect. But in last few years there is been a revolution, revolution of social
network which include Web Log or in short terms Blog. But interestingly they are not
contradictory to each other while both these online news papers social networks and blog
together they have created a unique web of sharing information.

Online news papers are formal news. While social networks are more causal together they are
created a new culture of sharing information. And these news papers rightly adapt the good
things from these blogs.

And because of that now a days a online news paper is not only some text its full of images,
audio, video and of course readers are happily contributing on the news that is published.

While yellow journalism is so much common in the traditional news papers, while politician’s
are using print media as a personal Vedanta, in that time of from out of the blue online news
papers are really a blessings where every journalist us Judged by the readers, where journalist are
accountable for every bit of information. Now days these online news papers creates a
opportunity becoming a journalist of our own. Where we can express, we can bring down
dictators, raise our voice.

Literature Review:

In Bangladesh most of the daily news paper has their online edition. Most of the people who use
6
Internet, read online newspaper or “E-Newspaper” instead of reading traditional newspaper.
They prefer online newspaper because it is free, comfortable to read wider view angle etc.
because of such facilities newspaper readers are now very much satisfied with online newspaper.
But only 2 or 3 online newspaper is popular among readers. Because these newspapers has user
friendly interface and support all most all computer.

In other countries online newspaper is now taking the place of traditional newspaper. Most of the
people read online newspaper. Online line newspapers are not free in those countries. Because of
quality and other valuable services people have to pay for online news paper service. Among the
services- people get HD video clips of news, extra picture of the news. They can also contact
with writers. Bangladeshi newspaper cannot increase quality of online newspaper and cannot
able to give those services that will make these news papers world class. In this fast and
competitive world without world class quality it’s impossible to survive.

We are still behind from world class newspapers. It is not possible to increase online newspaper
quality without increasing the IT infrastructure of our country. Without participation of most of
the population of our country we cannot increase the quality of online newspaper. Internet
service should be made available for general people as well as provide knowledge about using of
computer. Certainly it will take a long time.

Findings:
17
In this survey we have asked 74 peoples. Peoples of different areas. Based on these information,
browsing almost every local online news paper and comparing it with international online news
papers.

We have asked 74 peoples “Are you satisfied with download speed of the Newspaper?”
11% of people said that they are very satisfied 53% of the people said they are satisfied. Now
let’s take a look of these peoples Internet speed.

Those who said that they are very satisfied using:

Number of People Internet Speed Comment
2 256kbps, very satisfied
14 256kbps satisfied
5 128kbps, satisfied
2 128kbps, satisfied

1 512 kbps, very satisfied
3 1Mbps, satisfied
1 1.5 Mbps, Very satisfied
1 4Mbps, very satisfied
5 56kbps, satisfied

On other hand 15% people said that they are dissatisfied with the download speed of the
websites. Let’s take a look at their internet speed.

Number of People Internet Speed Comment

18
So it’s a clear indication that their dissatisfaction is not because of the newspaper’s slow server
speed. It’s because they are using slow Internet speed. Such as 56kbps -188kbps which is most
of the time less then they (ISP) offer.

So this survey proved that download speed of the online news papers is not slow above statistics
clearly indicates that. And most of the time news papers host their online newspapers on foreign
hosting or well standard Bangladeshi company. Which is why our conclusion is download speed
of online news papers are n not slow. In fact it’s fast.

We have asked “Are you satisfied with updated information in online version?”
15% people said they are very satisfied, 50% people said they are satisfied, 14% people said they
are dissatisfied.

The above statistics clearly indicates that most of the peoples are satisfied about the latest
information provided by news papers. Only 14 percent of the peoples are dissatisfied. And but
there is a large number of people are neutral 22% of them unable to decide about what they
think. That’s where e-news papers should look at. By delivering updated news more efficiently
they can make these neutral and dissatisfied people satisfied even very satisfied.

Most of the people might be satisfied but in compare of the international news papers while they
are instantly providing whatever is happens in the corner of the world our news papers are far
more behind in compare to them. While international papers included latest technology so that
people can get information through SMS, social network like Facebook, twitter our news papers
are behind in this stage. They should look in to these issues.

E-Satisfaction of on line newspaper reading in Bangladesh

We have asked people “Are you satisfied with the design of Bangla font?” 18% are very
satisfied, 50% are satisfied and 9% are dissatisfied. 19
Most of the Unicode based Bangla news papers using: Siyam Rupali, Solaiman Lipi these are
Standard Bangla font.
Some new paper use ACSSI which is not slandered, but ACSII also have some good Bangla font
such as Shutonny MJ.
And English news papers use Standard English fonts which are very common between us. So in
these sector readers are unexpectedly satisfied though using Unicode in all news papers and
developing new and better looking fonts can me decrease the dissatisfaction more.

We have asked people “Are you satisfied with the size of Bangla font?” 20% people said they
are very satisfied, 49% people said they are satisfied and 12% people said they are dissatisfied.

Understandably most of the online news papers are aware of the facts of these websites font. And
that's also has spotted on the survey. But still this simple matter is not properly done by some
very poor websites. These should be carefully done.

We have asked people “ Are you satisfied with the loading of image or any picture” 5% people
said they are very satisfied, 34% people said they are satisfied, 24% people said they are
dissatisfied.

hosting or well standard Bangladeshi company. Which is why our conclusion is download speed
of online news papers are not slow.

But some peoples are not using slow Internet but they are not satisfied i think that's because of
their perception on their mind. Though these e-news papers are provided dedicated speed in
terms of downloading images but users find it tough to down load or load that's because most of
the Internet that we are use is very slow in compare to global Internet speed.

To solve these case web developers should consider compressing these images before attaching
the websites. There are many freeware image compressor that they can use the compressors
make images very small dramatically without reducing the quality of the images such as: Image
Optimizer it can be found at:

http://www.imageoptimizer.net/Pages/Home.aspx

We have asked people “Are you satisfied with their search option?”
3% said vary satisfied, 31% said satisfied and 35% said dissatisfied.

Most of the news papers website don't provide search engine, an big number of these website
have own search engine the use Google Custom search which is not that dynamic. So they
should build their own search engine to search specific news from their website. And
understandably these surveys have rightly showing the poor situation of e-News papers in
Bangladesh. April 19, 2011

E-Satisfaction of on line newspaper reading in Bangladesh

We have asked people “Are you satisfied with the online option of giving opinion about some
event?”
7% are very satisfied, 38% are satisfied and 23% are dissatisfied
22
It’s clear that peoples aren’t satisfied with these facilities. Now day’s people don’t just come and
read they wan to share their thoughts. They want to let the society know the right and wrong.
They point out the limitations of news papers. They are brave and cautious these comments
expressing themselves makes online news papers more interactive and lively.

It’s important to provide freedom of speech what is clearly a lacking in Bangladeshi news
papers. Not every news papers are providing this facilities, even these commenting system could
be more interactive bye using social networking tools. It will give the users a user friendly
environment. And definitely will help reaching more people whit more effectively.

We have asked people “Are you satisfied with the linking option with other newspaper and
other website given in online newspaper?”
5% people said very satisfied, 27% people said satisfied, and 30% people dissatisfied.

In case of linking with other websites in e-news papers are very poor. In some extend most of the
web site are narrow minded. There are lots of translations in IT, sports coverage but they don’t
even feel they should mention the source. Some it pages provide links which is very poor
especially those sites doesn’t come with Unicode format are often write the link in Bangla by
mistake. So this side should be reorganizing. And this survey shows the realistic results of this
matter.
April 19, 2011

E-Satisfaction of on line newspaper reading in Bangladesh

We have asked people “Are you satisfied with the online advertisement given on newspaper?”
14% people are very satisfied, 23% people are satisfied and 36% people are dissatisfied. 23
Now a day’s advertisement is very annoying for us. But these advertisements could be very
informative. Obviously everybody doesn’t need every kind of advertisement. So what these
online news papers should do is to follow the Google marketing policy. They should study on
people and need to deliver based on reader’s interest. For example those readers daily read IT
section a laptop advertisement could be feasible.
This survey of yours clearly indicates that people don't like ads and news papers cant survive
without add. So this news papers responsibility to make it interesting. Make these advertisement
parts of entertainment.

We have asked people that “Are you satisfied with the archive option of online news paper?”
14% people are very satisfied, 47% are satisfied and 12% people are dissatisfied.

To us this is a peculiar result in another question they said they wan to online archive available
forever. But most of the online are keeping archive only for three years. So we thing online
archive should be available till the beginning. Which might require some special storage capacity
which we thing most of the e-news papers can afford.

We have asked people “Do the websites use Unicode format in case of Bangla website?”
18% people are very satisfied, 35% satisfied and 9% people are dissatisfied.
April 19, 2011

Now a days most of the news papers are using Unicode format. Though there are many e-news
papers yet to be contract Using Unicode format. This will ultimately provide better environment
for both readers and news papers owners.

E-Satisfaction of on line newspaper reading in Bangladesh

We have asked “Are you satisfied with the social communication network link given on line
paper?
04% people are very satisfied, 15% are satisfied and 53% people are dissatisfied and 28%
24
neutral.

Which clearly indicates that only few websites are social. In this age of social network news
papers should adapt social technology to reach out more reader. Clearly they should develop it
very quickly. Although some sites like Prothom-alo, Bdnews24 are already providing these
options.

We have asked people “Are you satisfied with news classification (such as national,
international, IT. Health) on online side?”
82% said YES and 18% said NO.

Most of the peoples like the classifications, those who have didn't like the classification they did
not really show the causes of their disliking. Those of them showed most of them are off topic
1. To classified the news neatly
2. More classification is needed
3. The news are pretty much all jumbled up together. They need to be more organized.
4. One of them thinks it should be restructured in new way like environment and others.
5. They are not well categorized and complete.
6. Readers don't read newspaper only for news. There are lots of classified advertisements,
job circulars etc. They need all of them in online version.

We have asked people “Which version do you like most?”

April 19, 2011

47% liked text version and 66% liked digital version. (Choosing both options are possible.)

Most of the people like digital version of the news paper. That means they like to read as it is
printed on traditional printed news papers. So online news papers should think of providing all

E-Satisfaction of on line newspaper reading in Bangladesh

25
the service, which is available in text version. Which will help them to reach more readers easily
and it will create more satisfaction on readers.

We have asked people “Do you thing news Papers should build a version for mobile browsing?

Here are the answers:

Yes : 95%
No : 05%
I don't understand the question. : 00%

This answer itself lacked for the need of mobile browsing options of online news paper. Now a
days most of the people have to access to the mobile and mobile Internet. So it it very important
and would be very help full if online news papers comes with mobile version which will
definitely increase the readers satisfaction.

Recommendation:

1. Searching of any news should be more easy looks of pages seem to be clumsy, it can be
turned into a neat and clean look. The layout and design of online newspapers should
employ intelligent use of grid, color and content hierarchy.
2. Newspaper like should change their interface like "Daily prothom alo"(easy interface).
3. All newspapers keep their archive of maximum 3 years old newspaper. They should keep
the archive of whole edition since beginning.
4. Provide one joint search facility for both the archive and today's news.
April 19, 2011

5. There can be an option of downloading high quality image of news paper.

6. Newspapers can introduce mobile edition.
7. Online news-paper service can be more effective for all those people who are busy with
their everyday life if they improve their comment item, advertisement.

E-Satisfaction of on line newspaper reading in Bangladesh

8. Try to giving us detail news with proper photo like a printed newspaper.
9. Advertisement given on newspaper should be more informative.
10. Proper font selection.
26
11. Prevent Yellow Journalism.
12. Most of the newspaper even doesn’t update their information. Like Daily Samakal never
updates the currency conversion rate they uploaded years ago. They can update all the
news by hour. It should be available forever of archive.
13. Loading time optimization.
14. They need to learn writing for the online. Yet they are habituated with the print type write
up. Writing for the online is a bit different and they need to know it’s a bit interactive as
well.
15. Average speed of Internet in Bangladesh is very low. Wimax that's best. 4 million people
use GP Internet and the speed is 1-14 kbps, so make the images and pages light, as a
result the pages will come faster. Usually E- papers are very heavy in size. Either it will
take too much time to show up or your limited bandwidth will cost.
16. Follow the famous paper's online edition.
17. Ensure correct Bangla spelling.
18. Some newspapers do not support Unicode. So the newspaper should be supportive for
Unicode.
19. Online version of the news papers should contain some more videos of the breaking news
because the people outside Bangladesh have less access to the news channels of our
country.
20. Use the length of the front-page to give an overview of the whole site.
21. Provide navigation support in different ways.
22. Place the news stream at a top position.
23. Use timestamps to indicate latest news.
