`Ê 40% of Indian entrepreneurs plan to hire next year as compared to 36% global entrepreneurs as
per a survey taken by Regus. In India, 78% of businesses are flexible about work location, while
globally 76% of SME¶s are more likely to be flexible about work location than 66% of overall
business

`Ê As per survey by Confederation of Indian industry (CII), employment prospects in SME has a
Business Confidence Index(BCI) value of 73.6

`Ê In India, SME¶s account for 45% of industrial output , employ over 60 million people and are
expected to contribute 22% to the growth of the economy by 2012

`Ê MSME accounts for almost 80% of employment, 35% of exports and contributes nearly 40% to
India¶s GDP with an estimated value of goods and services upto Rs 20 Lakh crore of value (09-
10)

`Ê Gujarat is considered as the land of entrepreneurs with close to 3.2 lakh MSME units

Entrepreneurs operating out of small clusters in Gujarat are seeking support to improve
productivity and growth through :-
- Single Window clearance
- Awareness of government schemes
- Skill Development programs
- SEZ benefits
- Tax concessions
- Women-centric schemes

Support is needed in :-
- Procurement of upgraded technology
- R&D support
- Training facilities for executives
- Regular information about market trends
- Marketing

ASSOCHAM recommended 16 SME cluster groups of Gujarat as to Central Government as


official cluster. Some of them are :-
- Rajkot - Diesel Engines & Foundry
- Surat ± Diamond cutting and polishing
- Ahmedabad ± Dyes & intermediates
- Gandhinagar ± Electronic Hardware
- Gondal ± Oil Mill
- Wankaner ± Powerlooms
- Mehsana - Isabgol

- Enhances productivity
- Widens Export Net
- Raises quality standards

The government assists nearly 450 clusters in the country and is yet to extend its support to more
than 6000 clusters

India has 388 documented industrial clusters, around 400 handloom clusters, about 3000
handicraft clusters and 2800 microenterprise clusters

Clusters account for 775 units, 72% employment, 61% investment, 595 output and 76% exports
of total small scale industries

Panipat cluster is one of the largest cluster in India and accounts to 75% of total blankets
produced in the country

Tirupur is responsible for 80% of country¶s cotton hosiery exports

Agra with 800 registered and 6000 unregistered small scale units make about 150,000 pairs of
shoes per day with a daily production value of $1.3 million and exports worth $60 million per
year.

Ludiana contributes 95% of country¶s woolen knitwear, 85% of sewing machines and 60% of
bicycle and bicycle parts
