Strategic management is the conduct of drafting, implementing and evaluating cross-


functional decisions that will enable an organization to achieve its long term objectives. It
broadly encompasses strategy formulation and strategy implementation. Considering the
need and importance of effectively executing business strategy, the course is designed to
provide insights to competitive business strategy. After discussing what is strategy a
conceptual review of strategy formulation is provided to set the ground for discussing
competitive strategy in a business environment. A framework for strategy execution is
discussed along with processes for building core competencies and competitive capabilities.
Actions that promote good strategy execution and effectively managing internal operations
of the firm are identified. The need for ethics and corporate social responsibility are
stressed to compete with responsibility. The business model and strategic drivers of a
multinational corporation are analysed for practical illustration of competitive business
strategy. Functional areas of marketing, finance, human resources, and information
technology are discussed in a strategic perspective.
