             There were giants in the earth in those days

            There seem to be two schools of thought on the word “nphiyl” which the KJV and others have 
often interpreted as “giant” or “nyphl” this coupled with the phrase a little further down which goes as 
follows “when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men” has led some to believe this to mean 
that fallen angels took wives of men. That is one school of thought. I will endeavor to put forward the 
other school of thought concerning these verses in Genesis. First lets look at the entirety of them in 
context from a KJV Bible. 

Genesis 6:1­5

1 And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born  
unto them,
2 That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all  
which they chose.
3 And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh °: yet his days 
shall be an hundred and twenty years.
4 There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto  
the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old,  
men of renown.
5 And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the 
thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

  Also before we delve any deeper when need to actually digress a little to the story of Cain and Able. If 
we look in Genesis 4:1­5 where we actually begin then we will disect the context of Genesis 6:1­5.

Genesis 4:1­5

1 And Adam knew ° Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare ° Cain, and said, I have gotten a man  
from the LORD.
2 And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the  
ground.
3 And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto  
the LORD.
4 And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had 
respect unto Abel and to his offering:
5 But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance  
fell.

    Lets summarize briefly what has occurred so far. First satan fell into sin, then he tempted Eve and 
she and Adam fell into sin. The Lord knew as early as this that he was going to send Christ Jesus, the 
offering of a lamb portended to the coming of Christ. Cain offered vegetables to the Lord as a sacrifice, 
but Abel offered a lamb. In sacrificing vegetables Cain did not see the gravity of sin, so the Lord did 
not accept Cains sacrifice, Abel on the other hand offered a “firstling” lamb of his flock, a cute, furry 
little lamb, which I am sure hurt him to do but he did it and the Lord accepted Abels offering. We see 
the Lord was revealing unto man that he was going to send a savior. Cain we see gets angry and kills 
Abel, which attempts to force Gods hand to send the messiah through the line of Cain. The Lord we 
will see though gives Eve another son this son is Seth and it was this line that the messiah would come 
into the world through. Seth led to Noah which led to Abraham which led to David which led to Christ 
Jesus, hence Genesis 6:2 using the term “sons of God”. Lets look to Genesis 4:25

Genesis 4:25 
And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath  
appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.

So when we read in Genesis 6:2 
That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all  
which they chose.

  I understand this to mean that the children which came from Seth, the line that messiah would come 
through began to take wives from the “daughters of men” which came from Cains family line. Their 
children I would think would at least gain the same benefit as did Ishmael, who was Hagar and 
Abrahams son, which even though the Lord told Abraham and Sara that they would have Isaac, the 
Lord still gave Ishmael a great nation when he was Hagars son because he was also Abrahams son. 
Since this is the case with Ishmael could it not stand to reason that this would have been the case with 
many children from a Cain/Seth family line? I contend the Bible agrees.  So lets start to look at Genesis 
6:4 the verse that uses “nphiyl” or “giants”.
 
Genesis 6:4 
There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the 
daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men  
of renown.

The word giants in this verse comes from the root nphiyl would could be interpreted as giant or tyrant. 
Lets look at the full definition.

Lypn nphiyl, nef­eel'; or nphil {nef­eel'}; from 05307; properly, a feller, i.e. a bully or tyrant:­­giant.

So we see giant is synonymous with a bully or a tyrant not unsimilar to Nimrod who is described as a 
mighty hunter or conquerer.  Genesis goes on to say that they became “mighty” men which were of 
“old”  and men of “renown” not unlike I would think of men in folklore like Alexander the Great or 
Braveheart or Nebuchadnezzar or Darius for that matter, men of “renown”, legendary.  We also see 
what their thoughts became consumed with in the following verse 5. 
Genesis 6:5
And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the 
thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

We also see Jesus using the angels as an example of creature who don't take others in marriage. Lets 
look to Matthew 22:29­30.

Matthew 22:29­30
Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God.
For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in  
heaven.

Also we see in Romans an interesting verse. 

Romans 8:14 
For as many are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
