Course Objective:
A manager irrespective of his functional area inevitably faces situations wherein
one has to receive, analyze and interpret data. The data could itself be in various
forms and with varying degrees of accuracy. This QT1 course is aimed at
equipping the prospective MBA with knowledge of various statistical tools and
techniques.
Specifically, QT1’s focus is on Business Statistics – a tool for good scientific
decision making when faced with uncertainty. These tools find application across
all functional areas – whether it is financial analysis, econometrics, auditing
application, operations planning or marketing research.
In this course, the aim is to equip the students with the processes involved in
converting data into information - by appropriate compilation, summarization,
analysis, interpretation and presentation of data. These are essential for managers
prior to decision making.
Course Coverage:
The following facets of Business Statistics will be covered:
• Descriptive Statistics - collection, presenting, analysis and interpretation
of data with focus on making business decisions.
• Probability Fundamentals – encompassing quantification of uncertainty,
variability and risk.
• Inferential Statistics - involving application of Central Limit Theorem
concepts in estimation and hypothesis testing basics.
Pedagogy:
While mathematical material will be covered, the major goal is - the students
should understand the application of the skill sets and tools which are introduced
in practical solution.
Hence the focus will be entirely on acquiring the ability to apply techniques learnt.
