Stewardship
By Larry Weber

I remember so distinctly the decision to tithe our

income. Many had suggested I should do so-my
accountability brothers, Rev. Shane, and those in my
Sunday School classes. I had read about tithing for
years but with seven children, poor personal finance
and a constant need for more money at the end of
our month, there was no way I thought I could afford
to tithe. I already tithed my time; I tithed my talents;
but my money? How could God ask that of me when
He knew we had all those kids to support? Nancy’s
childcare was already caring for too many children
in addition to our own. I was a school administrator;
where would I get additional time to work for additional
funds to cover what tithing would take from our
budget? We didn’t even own our house at the time.

Then we decided we had no choice; God insisted.

He insisted at a time in our lives when we could
least “afford” to do so. Sure enough, He opened the
windows of Heaven for us. In Malachi 3:8, He says,
“I will pour out a blessing so great you won’t have
enough room to take it in! Try It! Put Me to the test!”
I have tested Him and He is faithful when I am.

In the midst of our wrangling and dealing with money,
we are invited to think generosity and give generously.
In 2 Corinthians, Paul makes his appeal for giving to
the church: “a farmer who plants only a few seeds will
get a small crop. But the one who plants generously
will get a generous crop. You must each decide in
your heart how much to give. Don’t give reluctantly
or in response to pressure. God loves a person who
gives cheerfully.” Give a little, you receive a little. Give
a lot, you receive a lot. God will provide us with many
opportunities to be generous. In fact, God will so
enrich us that we can become even more generous!
We have the opportunity as a church and as a people
of faith in general to glorify God through our generous
gifts. This does not mean that giving is the only way
to glorify God. Not at all – Scripture does say: giving
generously glorifies God.

Tap into, participate in God’s generosity. Give and

watch the joy follow. As your associate pastor, I
tithe and do some additional giving, special offerings
and the like. Giving only begins as a money issue.
Giving is a spiritual issue – a gauge on the strength
and depth of our relationship with God. Giving is a
faith issue – giving speaks to our belief, trust, reliance
and commitment to God. Last, giving is a heart issue.
Giving identifies what’s in our hearts and why. Giving

Easter: A Beautiful
Disaster
By Rev. Shane Bishop

Our center sanctuary window was created by artist

Ken vonRoenn. We invited Ken to feel the energy
of Christ Church and then produce an original art
work for the new sanctuary that opened in December
2007. Ken wrote, “I wanted to find a theme that would
allow for an expression that conveyed the feeling
of joy that I believe is a unique characteristic of the
congregation. I decided to use the theme of Creation,
for it allowed me to develop an imagery of movement
that was energetic and uplifting so as to represent
this feeling of joy. The swirling colors suggest the
formation of life. Scattered throughout these swirling
colors are small clear areas, which are faceted glass
jewels, representing the stars of the universe. I hope
these designs adequately convey this theme as well
as embodying the enthusiastic joy of the congregation
of Christ United Methodist.”

We were excited about the installation of our round

window and there was a lot of enthusiasm when a
photographer showed up to mark the occasion for us
on November 27, 2007. The first three panels were
installed slowly but without incident. I went home for
the day and assumed I would arrive the next morning
to see the completed window in its splendor. But that feature of our sanctuary is a beautiful disaster.

Passion 2011
By Rev. Don Frazure

For the first time in my life, I look forward to Easter as

much as, if not more than, Christmas. Why? Because
over the past couple of years at Christ Church, we
have taken Holy Week and expanded it to Holy
Month! Our goal is to give Easter as much attention
as Christmas. The church through the centuries has
held the week between Palm Sunday and Easter to
be the holiest time in our church year. A few years
ago we noticed that many people were missing out on
the importance of holy week because for most people
your calendar accordingly. The schedule for Passion
Sunday is when they go to church. We began to think
2011 is as follows:
what it would look like if we presented the events of

Easter as a series spanning over 4 or 5 Sundays.
April 3 – Palm Sunday (Worship)
The result has been an “Advent for Easter” season
April 10 – Passover Sunday (Communion)
that begins three weeks before Easter and concludes
April 17 – Passion Sunday (Crucifixion)
one week later. This lets us present the events of
April 24 – Easter Sunday (Resurrection)
Holy Week on consecutive Sundays when we have
May 1 – The Road to Emmaus (Communion)
the most potential of reaching the most people for
Christ. It can be confusing if you are looking at your
wall calendar and see Palm Sunday as April 17, yet
we are celebrating it on April 3, but this gives us a
great way to prepare our hearts for Easter. Just be
sure to make note of the dates listed below and mark
