sound | signals | telephone | vibration | microphone

Telephones transmit speech messages via electric . There is a loudspeaker and a very

small which contains granules of carbon in the handset of a telephone. When you talk
into the microphone, the sound waves of your voice cause a metal diaphragm to vibrate. The

presses against the carbon granules and changes the very small amount of current

flowing out along the wires to the receiver of another . When the electric current
carrying the signal reaches the receiver handset, the same variations in the current will run
through an electromagnet. This causes the other diaphragm located at the earpiece to vibrate,

reproducing the of the speaker’s voice.

"Understanding Reference".

The first aerosol can was designed more than 75 years ago by a Norwegian engineer and inventor named
Rotheim. His invention did not have much of an impact on the world until the Second World War, when the U.S.
military introduced aerosol can for dispensing insecticide. It was only after the war that manufacturers noticed the
usefulness of the technology and thus it was adapted for a wide range of applications. The technology has evolved
over the years but most of the major elements of Rotheim’s design can still be found in today's aerosol spray cans.
The basic idea of an aerosol can is that one fluid stored under high pressure is used to propel another fluid out of a
can. The former which acts as a propellant boils at below room temperature whilst the latter boils at a much higher
temperature. The product is the substance you actually use such as hair spray or insect repellent. Until the 1980s,
most liquefied-gas aerosol cans used chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) as a propellant. However these were deemed so
harmful to the ozone layer that 70 nations signed the Montreal Protocol, an agreement to phase out the use of CFCs.
Today, almost all aerosol cans contain alternative propellants, such as liquefied petroleum gas, which do not pose as
serious a threat to the environment. Most aerosol cans today use a liquefied-gas system.
This is how a typical aerosol can works. When the valve is open, the pressure on the liquid propellant is
instantly reduced bringing the pressure down so that the propellant can begin to boil. In this process, particles break
free, forming a gas layer at the top of the can. The pressurised gas layer pushes the liquid product as well as some of
the liquid propellant, up the tube to the nozzle. Some cans may contain a ball bearing that produces a rattling sound
if shaken. It helps to mix the propellant and the product. In some aerosol cans, the propellant rapidly expands into
gas and this action helps to atomise the product, forming an extremely fine spray. Sometimes, the evaporating
propellant forms bubbles in the product, creating foam.
The consistency of the expelled product depends on several factors. These include the chemical makeup of the
propellant and product, the ratio of propellant to product, the pressure of the propellant and the size and shape of the
valve system. Manufacturers produce a wide variety of aerosol devices by configuring the elements in different
combinations.
