What is an NGO?
NGO, which stands for Non-Governmental Organization, is a non-profit making, voluntary, service-
oriented/development oriented organization, either for the benefit of members (a grassroots
organization) or of other members of the population (an agency). NGO's range in size from small groups
within a particular community to huge membership groups with a national or international scope.

For a population of 1.3 million inhabitants, Mauritius has a whooping greater than 700 approved NGOs
with each of them having a different focus.

NGOs mainly rely on the help of volunteers who are willing to engage themselves in helping the society.
However, those volunteers have limited time/resources to share; hence NGOs often cannot exploit their
potential to help the society.

In Mauritius, AIESEC itself is registered as an NGO.

What is NGO Empowerment project?

AIESEC Mauritius has identified that NGOs in Mauritius have a lack of volunteer who willing to dedicate
more time to help them. This situation creates an opportunity for AIESEC as we have a pool of
international volunteers, who are willing to come to Mauritius, engage themselves in a life changing
experience and impact the society

Hence, AIESEC in Mauritius has decided to launch this project which will allow us to place interns in
various NGOs in Mauritius, enabling the NGOs to get further support in their daily activities, to the
benefit of the society.

Benefits for the intern

An intern who engages in working with any of those NGOs will get the opportunity to:

 discover the social issues in an island nation

 find out how NGOs work to reach their objectives
 actively help in the NGO mission and personally impact on the society
 develop life skills such as leadership, communications, team working, creativity, and so on
 practice language speaking/writing skills
 work and live with an international team consisting of around 20 people from various countries
 And as a bonus, the intern will spend a lot of free time enjoying paradise Mauritius!
