Despite its subtitle, this is not a straightforward “introduction” to Deleuze.

This is
Deleuze for geographers “interested in a helpful guide to a new theoretical framework”
(vii). If Kant’s Critiques provided the philosophical framewwork “for a world of
Euclidean space, Aristotelian time, and Newtonian physics,” then Deleuze could be seen
as “the Kant of our time,” providing the same for a world understood through the lens of
“complexity theory” (vii-viii). The “Guide” (Part 1) shows the relevance of Deleuze’s
thought for effecting a paradigm shift in geography and related social sciences. The
massive Glossary (Part 2, pp. 47-168) is best treated as a companion to A Thousand
Plateaus (ATP). It seems the idea is for interested geographers to read the “Guide,”
then, their interest piqued, have the courage to dive into ATP first hand, with the
“Glossary” operating as a torch to illuminate the labyrinth of Deleuze and Guattari’s
text. Overall, the book assumes some prior knowledge of geography and debates in
geographical theory; as such, the interested philosopher will find the lexicon a bit
foreign, but worth the effort. Lacks index.
