When it was first published by the Northeast Organic Farming Association (NOFA) in 2004, this series of
eight guides on organic principles and practices became indispensible references for farmers. This spring,
Chelsea Green Publishing will re-release the series, with revisions and updates from the original farmer-
authors, bringing this essential set of knowledge to the burgeoning organic movement. The NOFA Guides
are simple—great for inspiring beginners; and deeply informative—perfect for pushing the practices of
established farmers to the next level. Each of the eight books is around 100 pages long, but the information
is weighty. The guides offer practical advice stemming from strong whole-systems farming theory. Each one
focuses on a specific topic, from compost to soil health, from organic dairy to organic poultry.Together they
cover all of the basic needs of an integrated, diverse, organic farm from soil microflora to livestock. In addi-
tion, they offer historical information, further resources, detailed appendices, and profiles of various organic
farms across the Northeast. The guides include detailed illustrations by Jocelyn Langer.

Author Bios
Seth Kroeck, has been working and managing organic farms in the Northeast and California for the past eight
years, and currently works on his own farm in Maine.

Brian Caldwell is the Farm Education Coordinator for the New York Chapter of NOFA, and has spent two
decades running a small commercial organic vegetable and fruit farm in New York.

Elizabeth Henderson has been growing organic fruits and vegetables for the fresh market for over thirty years.
She is one of the authors of The Real Dirt: Farmers Tell About Organic and Low-Input Agriculture in the Northeast, Food Book
for Sustainable Harvest, and Sharing the Harvest: A Citizen’s Guide to Community Supported Agriculture.

Karl North practiced subsistence agriculture in the French Pyrenees and has operated Northland Sheep Dairy
since 1980.

Karma Glos, worked briefly for the U.S. Forest Service studying small mammal ecology, and has been building
Kingbird Farm in upstate New York since 1996.

Sarah Flack, is a sought-after workshop presenter and agricultural consultant. She does independent organic
certification in¬spections of farms and processing facilities, which makes her an ideal source for this guide.

Bryan Connolly has a master’s degree in pollination biology from the University of Connecticut and has worked
for the University of Mississippi’s Medicinal Plant Garden, the New England Wild Flower Society, and the Connecticut
Department of Environmental Protection.

Grace Gershuny is internationally known in the alternative agriculture move¬ment and has worked for more
than thirty years as an organizer, educator, author, organic certifier, and consultant, as well as a small-scale market
gardener, and she has written extensively on soil management and composting.

Steve Gilman was an organic vegetable grower for thirty years before retiring to become the managing director
of a USDA regional organic research project called NEON (NorthEast Organic Network). Since then, he has become
policy director for the seven-state NOFA Interstate Council.
