Executive Summery
In recent past 3G launched in India but still customers are not aware
about use of 3G services. Though it is telecom revolution many mobile
companies are with their 3G dongles in market to provide browsing
facility by 3G speed.
I made one questionnaire for data collection and get it filled by 100
peoples which is the sample of students of management studies and
analyze the data. During this research I found that Indian customers
are willing to use Built-in 3G laptops and ready to pay approximately
Rs. 36000/- for medium size laptop and Rs 25000/- for mini laptop
6
Objectives of study
7
India has seen rapid technological growth in recent times, especially in
the areas of information technology and communication. India is
already one of the largest consumers of mobile phones, with an
average nine million users being added every month. The telecom
tariff rates offered in India are among the lowest in the world.
3G and WiMAX are the latest inclusions to the mobile and internet
communication fold, promising to take user-experience to a higher
level through interactivity, greater convenience, improved access, and
quality of services offered.
Launch of 3G in India
Doors have opened for the much awaited 3G service in India. The
introduction of advanced telecommunication services was proposed in
the tenth five year plan, paving the way for funding and resource
allocation for 3G services in the annual budget of the Department of
Telecommunication (DoT). The electronic auctioning of the 3G
spectrum is planned and done. This fresh initiative pave the way for a
wide range of products and mobile services are made available to the
Indian consumer. 3G will facilitate high-speed internet access through
mobile phones and provide mobility to a large number of services such
as video conferencing, gaming, and large downloads.
The 2.1 GHz band has been auctioned for launching 3G services in
India. License winners are expected to roll out 3G services in 90 per
cent of metro areas and 50 per cent in other areas given to them (with
a minimum 15 per cent rural coverage). This coverage is expected by
the end of the fifth year, after spectrum allocation.
8
What is 3G?
“Third Generation wireless telecommunication technology”, or 3G, is an
advanced radio communication technology which provides a marriage
of high-speed internet access and high-quality mobile telephony. The
technology enables simultaneous voice and non-voice data transfer.
9
How does 3G compare with the available
technology?
3G is a substantial enhancement over the current 2G technology, and
is capable of facilitating high-speed internet access and data transfer.
Adoption of 3G in India would involve substantial improvement in the
existing cell phones to be able to support 3G services. The idea of
launching 2.5G services was also considered due to the difficulty of
moving over from 2G to 3G. But the delay in launching advanced
telecom services and launch of phones with 3G capabilities made the
choice easier.
High speed digital packet switching networks are the source of the high
10
speed offered by 3G. Compared to the traditional circuit switching
technology, packet switching offers better transmission bandwidth
utilization, and hence higher data transfer rates. Additionally, advance
multiplexing techniques add to network speed.
11
acceptability has been good for 3G there, with internet access, gaming
and music download being some of the prominent applications. The
objective of launching 3G in Japan and Korea was to develop an
internal communication network and hence the access charges for
service providers were kept low, resulting in low 3G charges on
consumers, and hence greater popularity and acceptance. 3G has done
well in most countries due to its good features. It has been
successfully launched and is being operated in more than 50 countries
currently.
12
What’s ahead for 3G?
Organizations worldwide are involved in a race to develop the next
level of wireless communication, and hence to grab and maintain a
substantial market share. Some of the possible new areas of
communication standard evolution can be:
WiMAX
13
to consumers.
14
What are the key highlights of WiMAX?
WiMAX has some important features that have attracted the
attention of the whole information and communication community
ranging from internet operators and mobile telecom operators to fixed
line telecom service providers, and so on. The attraction of possible
gains in the future has brought many technology firms into the WiMAX
fold:
17
data intensive services by the substitution of the physical
hardware by wireless connectivity. For example, Internet
Protocol Television (IPTV) can substitute traditional cable-based
TV, backhaul for Wi-Fi hotspots can shift from DSL, evolution of
mobile data TV, emergency response services, wireless backhaul
as substitute for fiber-optic cable, etc.
18
performance in terms of bandwidth, speed, reduced latency,
encryption (noise reduction & security), et al.
3G vs. WiMAX
Comparison of existing wireless communication
technologies
The communications space has seen an array of wireless technologies,
each bringing in a new set of characteristics and raising performance
standards. 3G, WiMAX, WI-Fi and Bluetooth, are the prominent ones.
Both 3G and WiMAX have been touted as the next big hopes for the
communications sector and particularly telecommunications
technology. Globally, 3G has been present in the market for a period of
19
time and has acquired a market share, while WiMAX is still a very
recent phenomenon which has had limited deployments across the
globe. A comparative analysis of both follows:
Close scrutiny suggests that both 3G and WiMAX have a lot to offer to
the Indian market, with WiMAX being a bit more suited to the India
condition especially with the delayed deployment of 3G and weak fixed
wire & broadband infrastructure. Opportunities are vast for 3G and
WiMAX in India with the possibility of them co-existing as
complimentary technologies in the wake of strong communication and
coverage needs here. It is likely that both technologies would continue
to operate in India with the market being fragmented between these
two new technologies and other legacy systems.
21
3G devices
3G service is the most prominent service which is provided by the
telecom industry. But to avail this facility we need to have devices
which support 3g services. There are some devices which supports 3G
service and available in market for customer use that are as follows
a) Wireless Phone
b) Home Gateways
c) iPad
d) Wireless Walkie-Talkies
e) Digital Photo Frames
f) Data Cards
g) Mobiles
Data Cards
Data cards and USB devices are used very frequently by Indian
internet consumers. These users are increasing day by day on large
scale. 3G data cards which you use for net access are also termed as
3G Modem. There are various data cards available in the market which
might be in USB device form, Viz.
1. Airtel
2. Reliance
3. Tata Docomo
4. MTNL
5. BSNL
6. Micromax
7. Virgin
8. MTS (MBLAZE)
22
23
These devices are having sim card. Using any of these device you can
access internet anywhere on your laptop the only thing is that you
must get the coverage of that specific user in area you want to use
them. Even if one is new to use it but still it is easy to customers
because these devices are having auto instalation software with them.
So when you attach this device to your laptop or pc it will
automatically install the drivers as like pen drive and to connect with
24
internet you just have to click on connect button on the dialer. The
speed and tariff are depending upon subscriber and the state of use.
Technology Merger
We know from the previous chapter that telecom industry is
having revolutionary change as it switch to 3G. Actually it is late to
launce 3G in India but still there are hopes to grow faster. India is the
country which having largest share of telecom industry of the world.
India is having huge population using mobiles and is the largest
consumer market for mobiles.
This means that when you are using a laptop or notebook with in-built
broadband, you can rest assured that you are getting the fastest
possible connection.
You are not always online even if you have a laptop with built-in
mobile broadband. Almost all notebooks and laptops with in-built
mobile broadband have one-click access to the internet.
26
Built-in broadband is a great development for netbook users. People
who like the light and compact laptops designed for use on the move
will love the added bonus of having in-built mobile broadband.
Apart from cost company will also get benefits from incurred cost.
Company will get optimum profit against its increased market share.
For this profitability company can choose market scheming or
penetration pricing policies. During some early years company may go
for market scheming to recover its losses fast whereas after recovery
of losses company can go with market penetration pricing which will
create hurdles for companies entering in this business. If company
goes for long term benefit analysis benefits are high than cost incurred
for its new business.
28
Market testing for customer acceptance

survey for this, I found that peoples like this idea. I have also taken
there expected price for this kind of laptop. According to customers
Rs. 40000/- will be a reasonable price for this kind of laptop which will
have the following features in common.
1) i3 Processor
2) 2GB Ram
3) 500GB HD
4) Webcam
5) Wi-Fi
6) Bluetooth
7) 14” Screen
To do the above said work I was decided some research process for
this as follows.
Problem statement:
In India there is huge number population who wants to access
internet on laptop. And these peoples are now searching for the
product which will satisfy their need of browsing without carrying
external dongle and without frequent disconnection.
Null Hypothesis: There is huge demand for 3G built-in laptop in
India.
