Allergy Testing at QML Pathology Extended RAST Testing

The burden of the allergic disorders in the community is large. Management of the allergic
disorders requires accurate diagnosis of triggering factors or allergens. QML Pathology provides
RAST/In vitro specific IgE detection with a broad allergen menu from the world-leading Phadia
ImmunoCAP® which is the ‘gold standard’ methodology for in vitro allergy diagnosis.
The detection of specific IgE is relevant in disorders including:
• Allergic rhinoconjunctivitis • Atopic eczema
• Asthma • Food allergy
• Stinging insect allergy • Certain drug allergies
• Certain occupational allergies.
Request Suggestions Based on Clinical Problem Type
A suggested practical approach for allergy diagnosis: For patients who are willing to pay a gap fee we are able to provide more extensive panels of
• Request ‘RAST’ or ‘Specific IgE’ allergen testing which are useful in certain clinical scenarios.
To order simply write the name of the panel from the table below, e.g. ‘Extended RAST
• Medicare funding permits four testing episodes per year and QML Pathology allows for
testing of four allergens, or allergen mixes, per episode. panel 1’ in the ‘Tests Requested’ area of your request form. These panels are not fully
• Allergen selection is directed by the clinical scenario: funded by Medicare and attract an out-of-pocket fee. The standard Medicare rebate for RAST
testing is applicable.
- The most common inhalant allergen sensitivities are house dust mite, grass pollens,
mould spores and animal danders
- The most common food allergen sensitivities are wheat, milk, egg and nuts
- A guide to allergen selection by clinical scenario is included with this publication. Extended RAST Fees
- We will base the selection of allergens for unspecified requests for ‘RAST’ on the
patient’s age and any clinical information supplied. Out-of-pocket fees:
