EATING OUT
Summer will arrive in earnest around
mid-May, an event that will have a definite
negative effect on our dining habits. It will
replace dos with don’ts and cans with can
nots. We won’t want to take our usual table
on the terrace for Rivington Grill’s Saturday
roast, Al Badia Golf Club’s new picnic
brunch will go into hibernation for the
summer and a post-brunch tipple on the
Traiteur terrace will not be quite as pleasurable.
So, this month we have asked Asado’s Norberto
Palacios for his barbecue wisdom and rounded
up the city’s best BBQs, so you can enjoy the
temperate weather before it becomes no more
than a happy memory (p48). Enjoy. We also
give our verdict on celeb chef Jamie Oliver’s
new Festival City restaurant (p50), Amala (p53)
and the new Khalidiyah branch of Jones The
Grocer (p55). Plus The Critic’s touching tribute to
recently departed chef Santi Santamaria (p56)
and a couple of new Saturday brunches (p57).
That should keep you going for a while.

grain of truth, then female ears across
Dubai will be pricking up at news that
London luxury accessories store Gina

The region’s Mac lovers are raising a half-hearted cheer for the new Apple concession in Mall

step in the right direction. We just need the iPad 2 now. Jobs and Branson, hear us roar.

What? Signature Shiseido face and body treatment

Country of origin? Japan
Where can I try it? ShuiQi Spa & Fitness
What does it involve? When it comes to Japa-
nese spa treatments you can go one of two ways: traditional or
scientific. Never ones to deny progress, we went for the modern
approach, with new products from famed skincare line Shiseido.
This treatment starts with a footbath while you choose from
various scents, potions and pressure levels, before dead skin cells
are sloughed off with a gentle exfoliator. After a rainshower your
body is treated to a Qi massage with cream instead of oil, which
is much richer. The cream is removed with hot towels (amazing)
and the skin is nourished with a lotion of your choice. Just as
you’re nodding off you’ll enjoy a mini-facial customised to your
needs (ours included a deep cleanse with vitamin E beads), fin-
ished off with an anti-ageing serum, eye-cream, pressure point
manipulation to wake you up, and a nice cup of jasmine tea.
Does it work? Truth be told, the treatment would have been
more enjoyable if the room hadn’t been so cold, so after the
body scrub we lay shivering under a towel. But it left sun-
parched skin smooth and soft, while the facial gave a good
brightening boost. Best of all, the massage struck a perfect bal-
ance between relaxing and enlivening.

Country of origin? Sweden
Where can I try it? Retreat Health & Spa
What does it involve? There’s none of the foot washing
ceremonial flim-flam so common in many of the UAE’s spas.
Oh no. It’s straight down to business, and forget the ridiculous
underwear, too. Having said that, our therapist was ever so
polite, checking the temperature and the lighting were right and
handling our spectacles extremely carefully. And he did offer
us the pants, we just didn’t want them. The massage itself was
55-minutes long and administered at a medium pressure with
enough oil to please a Texan.
Does it work? It wasn’t as firm as your regular Swedish mas-
sage, but the kneading was concentrated on particular muscle
groups and relieved the tension in our shoulders and a lurking
cramp in our leg, which our therapist managed to locate. There is
also a lovely relaxation area with heated beds, Jacuzzi, sauna and
steam room.

Treasure island
Singapore is a pearl of a

you’ll discover a glittering

According to the Chinese zodiac, 2011 is

the year of ‘The Golden Rabbit’: not a time
for prizing unusually-coloured small fluffy
creatures, but rather a period of peace and
prosperity, when we’ll apparently feel more
carefree and eager to enjoy artistic pursuits.
And nowhere is this upbeat, artsy new
year’s vibe more in evidence than Singapore.
Having celebrated the new year in February
with a riot of colourful carnivals, the island’s
now settling in for a year of culture and
creativity – with lucky folk in the UAE (just
half a day’s flight away) ideally placed to reap
the benefits.
The island of Singapore – from the
Malay singa pura, meaning Lion City – is a
prosperous little state off the southern tip of
Malaysia. Having gained sovereignty in 1965,
today it’s a cosmopolitan, tolerant home to a
local population with roots in China, Malaysia
and India, as well as a large expat community.
The result of this melting-pot of nationalities
is a country with an eclectic, but undeniably
charming, character.
The first thing everyone notices is just how
green Singapore is: trees covered in flowers
bloom along every street, while carefully
tended shrubs line busy main roads.
This well-manicured greenery harks back to
a time when nature was in charge of the island
– so for a taste of more tropical times, visit
the famed Botanic Gardens. Entry’s free,
but you have to pay to get into some of the
attractions inside, including the sweet-scented

FOR THE FIRST TIME ON PUBLIC DISPLAY
IN THE UAE. WHITE TIGERS. ONLY AT
AL AIN WILDLIFE PARK & RESORT.
Al Ain Wildlife Park & Resort expresses its gratitude to Sheikha Latifa Bint Rashid Bin Khalifa Bin Saeed
Al Maktoum for the generous donation of two extraordinary White tigers.

The almost two year old White tiger siblings, a female and a male, have relocated to their new home at
Al Ain Wildlife Park & Resort and are now on exhibit. Come and watch them in their new enclosure in
the zoo’s cathouse.

Today, White tigers are reported to live only in captivity. White tigers are ambassadors for their cousins
in the wild (India, South-East Asia and Russia). Tigers are critically endangered with some subspecies
such as the Sumatra tiger almost being extinct in the wild. They are in a badly need for protection and
it is our obligation to conserve them for future generations.
