PUBLISHER'S PREF CE
"Kali is a Hindu goddess with a long and complex history in Hinduism. Although sometimes presented s dark and violent, her earliest incarnation as a figure of annih lation still has some influence, while more complex Tantric belie s sometimes extend her role so far as to be the Ultimate Re lity (Brahman) and Source of Being. She is also known and re ered as Bhavatarini (meaning: redeemer ofthe universe Dakshi eswar Kali Temple), Finally, the comparatively recent devotion I movement largely conceives of Kali as a straightforwardly enevolent mothergoddess, Therefore, as with her association with the Deva (god) Shiva, Kali is associated with many Devis goddesses) - Durga, Bhadrakali, Bhavani, Sati, Rudrani, Pa ati, Chinnamasta, Chamunda, Kamakshi or kamakhya, Uma, eenakshi, Himavanti, Kumari and Tara. These names, if repe ed, are believed to give special power to the worshipper. he is the foremost Goddess among the Dasa Mahavidyas."
Sir John Woodroffe (1865 -1936) "Sir John Woodroffe (1865a€"1936), a so known by his pseudonym Arthur Avalon, was a British Or entalist whose work helped to unleash in the West a deep and ide interest in Hindu philosophy and Yogic practices.

PREFACE
HIS celebrated Kaula Stotra, which is now transl ted from the Sanskrit for the first time, is attribute to Mahakala Himself. The Text used is that of the edi ion published at Calcutta in 1899 by the Sanskrit Press Deposit ry, with a commentary in Sanskrit by the late Mahamahopadh aya Kr~hl)anatha Nyaya-paiicanana, who was both very learne in 'rantra-Sastra and faithful to his Dharma. He thus refused the offer of a good Government Post made to him personally y a former Lieutenant-Governor on the ground that he would not accept money for imparting knowledge. Some variants in reading are supplied by this commentat am indebted to him for the Notes, or substance of the n tes, marked K. B. To these I have added others, both in English and Sanskrit explaining matters and allusions familiar doubtles to those for whom the original was designed, but not so to the English or even ordinary Indian reader. I have also referre to the edition of the Stotra published by Gal)esa-Candra-Gho. at Calcutta in 1891, with a translation in Bengali by Gurun tha Vidyanidhi, and commentary by Durgarama-Siddhantava Tsa shattacarva. I publish for the first time Vimalananda-Sva Tis Commentary to which I again refer later. When in this Intro uction or in the Commentary I have not mentioned these wo works my authorities are the Tantras or Tantrik works wh ch I cite, or. the information I have gathered from those wh m I have consulted. One of the chief features of this Stotra is that it gives the mamroddhara of the oakshlna-Kallka. It not only gives us the

T e words "Svaruparit' (5th sl.) and "Sakalarit' (6th sl.) point to th s VidyiirajfjJ. After the full Vidya-rajfjJ has been given in the fir t five Slokas. the 6th Sloka gives the various other Mantras of Ie s importance and significance-ranging from one syllabled to ni e-syllabled, IS-syllabled, 21-syllabled and so forth. T is Mantroddhara has been made following the authority of Kalika-sruti, Niruttara-Tantra and other Tantras. Many com menta ors, however, have apparently in the view of Virnalananda fa led to consult the above authorities, and have thus fallen into er ors and have given a different Mantroddhara. Some take the 1 Sioka to give a one-syllabled mantra, the 2nd sloka as also th 3rd, two two-syllabled mantras, the 5th a nine-syllabled one and so on: a view which it is contended is opposite to such p ssages as "atha hainam brahmarandhre brahma-svarupinJm a noti b(had-bhtinu-jtiytimuccaret" in the 1st SOkta of Kalikopani~ad; or passages in Niruttara-Tantra (Ch. II) b ginning with "Atha vaksye Kulestini Dak~no-kalika-manurit' and ending with "Sarva-mantra-mayJ vidya s{"$ti-sthityanta/(, ri(1i." The Svarnl further refers me to the end of the Kalikopani$ad where dealing with the various Mantras of the D kslna-Kallka it is said "Atha sarvam vidyam pratbamam ekam yam va travatt: vii namatravatutitati: vii k(tVa iapet:" The gr at Tantrlk PCirlJananda Giri explaining the passage says 1'5 tvam vidyiim-iti purvoktadvovimsatyak$lryiih prathama bJ amv« bJja-dvayamva etc. (vide ~yama-rahasyaril, Rasikamoh n's edition, p. 36.) Fr m the above consideration, it is clear that at the very b ginning in the first 5 Slokas the 22-syllabled Mantra is given and then the others. It may be added here that the fact of M hakala's composing the Hymn in 22 Slokas not more nor Ie s-is also an indication of the correctness of the svamts

To the Pasu, sadbana by nig t is prohibited, for it connotes in Sakta-sadhana, worship with the Paikatattva. The Pasu is still bound by the ptisa (bonds) desire, etc., and he is, therefore, not adhiktifl, for that which, . undertaken by the unfit, will only make these bonds stronger. or him, on the contrary, there are severe restrictions in this m tter, for, as the Saktakrama cited by the commentator sa , "Maithunam tatkathtiltipari7 tadgo$/hrrfl parivarjayet." ( he PaSu should avoid maithuna, conversation on the subjec and the like.) The Pasu should avoid the eight forms of rna thuna known as a?ttiti;Ja maithuno-viz., smara(larh (thinkin upon it), kirtanam (talking of it), kelih (play with women), p k$CJlJ1m(looking upon women), guhyabhti$CJ(1am(talk in priv te with women), sari7kalpah (wish or resolve for maithuna), adh avastiyah (determination towards it), as well as kriytini$Pattih ( ctual accomplishment). The Nitya Tantra, which the comments or cites, says: "Rtitrau naiva yajed devimsandhytiytimvfi'partih ake"-"He (the Pasu should never worship the Devi during th latter part of the day or in the evening or at night," To his, from amongst many other authorities, I may add the Svatantra, which says that the Pasubhava sadhaka should done lakh of japa in day time and that a Wra devoted to his ow Acara should do one lakh of japa at night; Pasubhtivorato mant r diva lak$CJ japari7caret. Svtictiranirato viro fti IOU lak;;a japari1coret. In connection with this verse I must observe that in the notes to verse 20 it is said that the fi t half of the 20th Sloka is meant for "posustidhakas" and t at the 2nd half refers to the "pur(1tibhi$iktavlrastidhaka," as also that the word "pararit' (afterwards) means and ref rs to the time when the 'Pasu' having received abhi$eka en rs vitiioiro and is odhiktirlfor the midnight purascarana. Vimal nanda tells me that this is wrong
