Poetry Notebook

1. Your poetry notebook must include the following items and be organized in
this order:
a. Cover Sheet
i. Should include: title – Poetry Notebook, your name, period,
and date
b. Table of Contents (number each page, put pages in numerical order.)
i. Should include: title – Table of Contents, followed by the title
of each poem, author’s name, the poetic device you are
analyzing for this poem and page number.
ii. Notes, directions and rubrics are included in the table of
contents and are at end of notebook. Last page is rubric page
for grading purposes.
c. Ten, (10) self-chosen poems, two of which are original
d. Notes on poetry terms and elements, such as figurative
language/speech and musical devices.

2. Using poetry terms, elements and devices that are covered in class, choose
from your textbook, the Internet, or another source, eight, (8) examples of
differing forms of poetry. You will write two (2) original poems that have
differing elements from these eight (8) self-chosen poems.
a. You cannot use any of the poems that we cover in class.
b. You can use a poetic term and/or device only once. For example,
once you show an example of “personification,” you cannot use that
device again.
c. You may use only one type of poem once. For example, once you use
a limerick, you may not use it again, even if it uses a difference
device.

3. Type (or print neatly) each of these eight (8) unoriginal poems and two (2)
original poems on a separate sheets of paper. They must be legible.

4. List the title of the poem, the author and the page number the poem was
found on. (If the poem came from another source other than your text, list
the source as well.)

5. Highlight the line or words in which the device is used.


6. At the bottom of each poem, respond to the following:
a. Tell what type of poem it is: State the definition. Prove what type of
poem it is.
b. Tell which device the poem uses. Give a definition of the device.
i. Explain why this is an example of this device. Quote the poem
to PROVE it.
ii. Include the definition of the poetic device you are analyzing.
c. Discuss why the poet used this device.
i. Explain why you think the poet used this device. This is a
reasonable guess on your part.
d. Evaluate the effectiveness in the poem as to whether the device works
well with the type of poem and explain why it works and/or doesn’t
work.
e. Your responses to the above MUST be in complete sentences and
follow all spelling and grammar rules. You will have three
paragraphs for each analysis. Do not use circular reasoning!
f. Follow the formatting guidelines given and demonstrated in class.

7. After highlighting and analyzing a poem, draw a colorful picture or decorate


your page in such a way that depicts that poem’s tone, mood, imagery,
theme, or symbolism. Remember, creativity throughout your poetry
notebook, including the cover and table of contents pages will earn you
accolades.

The entire notebook is due Friday, April 22, 2011. It will be worth 250 points.
Please see attached rubric to see how it will be scored. This is a MAJOR Writing
Assignment!
