SAP Dual-Stack System (SAP Application

Server ABAP+Java)
An SAP dual-stack system has both an Application Server ABAP and an Application Server
Java in the same system. This means, that every application server instance has both an
ABAP stack and a Java stack on the same host. The database instance of an ABAP+Java
system has an ABAP schema and a Java schema. The ABAP stack communicates with the
Java stack using standard RFC calls.

You can install an ABAP+Java system based on SAP NetWeaver 7.0 or higher in one
installation run (new system).

Note:

• If your ABAP system is based on SAP NetWeaver 7.0 (without Enhancement Packages), you can still
install the Java Add-In to an already existing ABAP system.
• SAP dual-stack (ABAP+Java) systems based on SAP NetWeaver 7.0 Enhancement Package 1 or higher
can only be installed with
software unit (usage type) SAP Process Integration (PI) or software unit (usage type) SAP Mobile
Infrastructure (MI).
• SAP dual-stack (ABAP+Java) systems based on SAP NetWeaver 7.1 or higher can only be installed with
usage type (software unit)
SAP Process Integration (PI) .
• See SAP's dual-stack recommendations at http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/landscapedesign.

SAP Dual-Stack System (SAP Application Server ABAP+Java)

New SAP dual-stack (ABAP+Java) systems based on SAP NetWeaver 7.0 Enhancement
Package 1 or higher can only be installed with software unit (usage type) SAP Process
Integration (PI) or software unit (usage type) SAP Mobile Infrastructure (MI).

New SAP dual-stack (ABAP+Java) systems based on SAP NetWeaver 7.1 or higher can
only be installed with software unit (usage type) SAP Process Integration (PI) .

SAP Dual-Stack (ABAP+Java) System Instances

Mandatory SAP dual-stack (ABAP+Java) system instances are:

• Primary application server instance (central instance)

• ABAP central services instance (ASCS)
The ASCS is only mandatory for newly installed SAP ABAP systems based on SAP NetWeaver 7.2 and
higher.
• Java central services instance (SCS)
• Database instance

Optional instances are:

• ABAP central services instance (ASCS)

The ASCS is only optional for SAP ABAP systems based on SAP NetWeaver lower than 7.2.
• Enqueue replication server instance (ERS)
An ERS is required both for the ASCS and the SCS
• Additional application server instances (dialog instances)

Distribution of SAP Dual-Stack (ABAP+Java) System Instances

You can distribute the instances as follows:

• Standard (Central) SAP Dual-Stack (ABAP+Java) System (for SAP systems based on SAP NetWeaver
lower than 7.1, this distribution variant is still named "central system"):

3
SAP Dual-Stack System (SAP Application Server ABAP+Java)

All SAP system instances reside on one and the same host. You can have additional application server
(dialog) instances either on the host of the primary application server (central) instance or on separate
hosts.

• Distributed SAP Dual-Stack (ABAP+Java) System:

At least one SAP system instance resides on a host other than the remaining instances. Each SAP system
instance can be installed on a separate host.

• High Availability SAP Dual-Stack (ABAP+Java) System

A high availability SAP Dual-Stack (ABAP+Java) system is a distributed system whose system instances
are installed in such a way as to protect them against failover. This is achieved by protecting Instances
with critical components by installing them on hardware clusters, and instances with non-critical
components are installed redundantly on several hosts.
