An international environment
Confucius Institute comes to U of R

Students at the University of Regina
will soon have more access to the inter-
national community. Dr. Vianne
Timmons and the University of Regina
announced earlier this month that an
application to have a Confucius
Institute on campus has been ap-
proved.
The approval of the institute came
after months of hard work putting to-
gether the application.
“Both putting together the appli-
cation and partnering with Hunan
University on the application took a
while. We had to meet with the
Chinese embassy in Canada; we had to
do a lot of advocacy work and infor-
mation sharing about the reason why
it should be funded at the University
of Regina.”
Dr. Timmons has been the presi-
dent of the University of Regina for
three years, and she felt that this puts
her closer to the ultimate vision she
has for the University.
“I think it’s a real step forward in
our relationship with China and my
goal to internationalize our university.
I want a student that is from Regina to
come to the University of Regina and
walk away after four years and say, ‘I
had such a great international educa-
tion.’”
A Confucius Institute is a public
institution funded by the Chinese gov-
ernment that supports understanding
of Chinese culture, language, and his-
tory around the world. There are more
than 300 such institutes in almost 100
countries with a small number of them
in Canada. The application must be
submitted and approved by the head-
quarters in Beijing.
For many Chinese students in
Regina it was a comforting feeling to
learn about this announcement.
“Before I came here, China had
said that they had many Confucius

I just wondered when we could get
one here because there are a lot of
Chinese people here and it is a good
way for people other than Chinese
people to know our history,” said
Yinglan Chou, a fourth-year account-
ing student from China.
While the institutes provide many
opportunities for Chinese students, it
is students from every part of the
world that benefits from this.
“Of course, Chinese students will
benefit and will enhance the under-
standing of China among all our stu-
dents, so that will benefit them, but
for our students that are from other
countries and from Canada and
Regina it will provide opportunities

This new collaboration is just one
of many that have been done in the
strong relationship between U of R
and China. Timmons was hoping the
Confucius Institute could be set up in
October 2011 just in time for celebra-
tions marking U of R’s 30-year rela-
tionship with China.
“It will be a very great opportu-
nity for people in Saskatchewan to
learn more about the art, history, and
culture of China and once we enhance
those understandings then we en-
hance those relationships.”
As China is one of the world’s
fastest-growing economies, with over
1.3 billion people, many feel that it is
important for Canadians to know
about their culture – including
Timmons.
“It is a power to be reckoned with
and we do a lot of economic activity
with China. In this province it’s critical
that we all get a better understanding
and build that relationship; both for
our economy, but also our students
should become global citizens.”
From a Chinese student’s perspec-
tive it is also important. “We are al-
ways proud of our long history. We
have a large population and it’s very
us,” Chou said.
Dr. Timmons was confident that
the institute has the proper resources
for this to be a success.
“There will be Chinese language
classes. There will be visiting experts
from China coming regularly to talk
about art, history, culture, language.
So, we will have a constant stream of
experts from Hunan University who
have to be nationally qualified and
seen as experts in their field.”
Over the past few years, the uni-
versity has been working hard under
Timmons to expand internationally.
This semester there was over 800
Chinese students on campus and, in
recent years, there has been a lot of
work done to strengthen relationships
with other countries like Nigeria and
Saudi Arabia. Chou thinks that despite
not having a Confucius Institute previ-
ously, the U of R had already estab-
lished a good environment for
international students to come and
learn.
“I know there are a lot of events
for international students and they let
us communicate with each other. They
have some Chinese language classes
and I’m already impressed about it be-
cause it means some people want to
learn the Chinese language.”
She did, however, admit that more
could be done.
“Sometimes I think it’s not good
enough, but in development you need
some time.”
Dr. Timmons said that the univer-
sity plans on building more relation-
ships and are currently working hard
to try and get more international stu-
dents from India. For the time being
she was excited about the eventual es-
tablishment of the Confucius Institute.
“This has been a real complement
to our campus. This investment will
make a direct difference for students
and that’s exciting for me.”
Here’s hoping this will bring us
closer to a country that is so far away.

Don’t drink and vote

Surprisingly, these people had very astute observations about Canadian politics

On Friday, Mar. 25, Canada made his-
tory as the first nation in the
Commonwealth to have a government
fall due to a non-confidence motion
based on a contempt ruling. The mo-
tion, put forward by Liberal leader
Michael Ignatieff, called Stephen
Harper and the Conservative govern-
ment out on being found in contempt
of Parliament following a ruling by
the procedure and house affairs com-
mittee that the Government was with-
holding vital information – such as
estimated costs on corporate tax cuts,
crime legislation, and the controver-
sial purchase of a fleet of Lockheed
Martin F-35 fighter jets – thus prevent-
ing members of parliament from being
able to do their jobs.
Mar. 25 was also the 39th Keg-a-
Rama, the annual Business Students’
Society fundraiser for the
Saskatchewan Professional Firefighter
Association Burn Fund. University of
Regina students and members of the
community teamed up to raise $19,100
for burn victims across Saskatchewan

The Carillon wanted to know what
students thought of the impending
election. What better time to do it than
when everyone’s drunk? We asked
students, and they responded; in many
cases, they did so with a lot more
vigour and knowledge than you’d ex-
pect from people who’ve been drink-
ing for four hours. Last names have
been omitted to protect the inebriated.
The Carillon: And what are you
dressed as today, Greg?
Greg D.: I’m dressed as Risky Business.

TC: Risky Business?
GD: Tom Cruise, you know?
TC: Okay. So. Parliament was dis-
solved today and we’re going into an
election. What do you think about
that?
GD: I don’t know. I don’t pay attention
to that shit.
TC: Okay. Fair enough. Do you think
you have an obligation to your baby?
[gestures to infant doll GD is cradling
in his arms]
GD: Uh, well, I dunno. I don’t even
know what that means.
TC: Well, thank you very much, Greg.
TC: Sam, what are you dressed as?
Sam K.: The fraternity from Old School.
TC: Sam – today Canadian Parliament
was dissolved and we’re going to an
election next month. What do you
think about that?
SK: I don’t agree because I’m a
Conservative and Conservatives
should stay in power.
TC: Do you think that Conservatives
being found in contempt of Parliament
was an important thing, or do you
think it was something that in the big
scheme of things wasn’t that impor-
tant?
SK: I do think it was an important
thing because I believe that Liberals
are – I don’t know what the word for it
is, but I would say that Conservatives
are the future, Liberals are downgrad-
ing things.
TC: What are you dressed as today,
Teagan? Just so I can remember when
I’m writing it down.
Teagan K.: Uhhhhhhhhh, Troll. Troll.
TC: Troll? Okay. Teagan, were you
paying any attention to Canadian pol-
itics today? Do you know that we’re
going into an election next month?
TK: I heard that because of the
budget?
TC: Right. It’s actually, they voted on a
non-confidence motion after [the
Conservatives] were found in con-
tempt.
TK: So does that go to the Queen then,
or how does that work?
TC: It goes to the Governor General.
And now Stephen Harper’s going to
ask him to dissolve Parliament and
we’re going to an election.
TK: An election. Yup.
TC: What do you think of the
Parliament being dissolved based on a
contempt ruling?
TK: [pause] Oh, fuck.
TC: Yeah. [laughs] Just go with it.
TK: I think it’s good. I think we need
change. I think a good change of gov-
ernor, of government would be good.
Um. Yeah. That’s my opinion on that.
I think we need change. I think
Canada needs to change. I think
Stephen Harper has had his chance,
but I dunno. I don’t think he’s done
very well, but I don’t think he’s done
very bad, either, so it’s hard to judge
on that. Alright, so, I dunno. That’s
my opinion. I’m kinda open to it,
right? So. I kinda go both ways, so. It’s
whatever has. Yeah.
TC: And what are you dressed as to-
day, Michelle?
Michelle: A Troll.
TC: So, um, you heard the question
but I’ll just reiterate it. Canadian
Parliament was dissolved today based
on a non-confidence motion put for-
ward by Michael Ignatieff addressing
the motion of contempt – er, the
Conservatives being found in con-
tempt. What do you think about that?
M: I think I agree. I don’t really fully
trust Harper, you know what I mean?
There’s a part of him that I don’t com-
pletely agree with, like, it’s a democ-
racy, people should be able to say what
they wanna say. But how Harper has
such like a, like his party’s so
whipped, it’s a bit too much, you
know what I mean?
TC: Right.
M: It’s a bit too much in the sense that
they’re not allowed to speak free of
will, they have to go through Harper,
and then speak, you know what I
mean?
TC: Okay, so do you think it’s a good
thing that we’re going to an election
next month?
M: I think it’s good. I think it’s good to
get a change. It’s been – it’s been, like,
enough time, they’ve been in govern-
ment a long enough time for people to
judge whether it’s been beneficial or
not beneficial, so yeah. It’s been
enough. It’s been enough time.
[Note: The next interviewee had what he
said was a “unique” name, and requested
that he be identified as “R.W.” Also, we
forgot to ask what he was dressed as, but
there was tie-dye involved.]
“R.W.”: So, um, first of all, stunned
that the Liberals would even allow this
to happen because of the fact that in
the polls they’re so behind and clearly
Ignatieff is the leader that is not going
to bring the Liberals to new fruition
and they’re not going to win. But on
top of that I’m even more stunned
though the NDP would allow this to
happen because I don’t think with Jack
Layton as a leader they’re ever going
to make up for anything more than
they’ve made up for right now.
They’ve accomplished more in the last
couple terms with Mr. Harper in
power than they will if they were to go
to an election again. I think they would
lose more of their electoral vote. And
at the end I’d just like to say that
Harper is likely going to strengthen
his minority. There’s no way he’s
gonna make a majority but I think that
a lot of people are happy with the way
he dealt with the economic system and
that they’re just actually pumped on
him and they’re gonna continue elect-
ing him even though he is a complete
fascist pig.
TC: Right. I got one quick follow-up
which was you talked about the poli-
tics, like, how you are surprised that
the Liberals would allow it cause
they’re not up in the polls, but the mo-
tion of non-confidence was based on
the government being found in con-
tempt. Do you think that played into
the motion passing?
“R.W.”: I don’t think it remotely mat-
ters. The people who support Harper
are Conservatives and they don’t care
what Liberals say. They were found
on contempt but it was on textu – tech-
nicality unless I’m mistaken so I do
not think they are going to take it as a
serious detriment against Harper. And
on top of that I think that a lot of the
people that support the Liberals are
gonna look at this and go, “Well
done.” But the people who actually
support the Conservatives are gonna
continue voting with the lines that
they had before.
TC: What are you dressed as today?
Simon K.: Robosexual.
TC: Robosexual, okay. So the Canadian
government was found in contempt –
the Conservatives were found in con-
tempt of Parliament, a non-confidence
motion was [put forward] and the
government was dissolved. We’re go-
ing to an election next month. What do
you think about that?

On May 2, for the fourth time in just
over a decade, Canadians will once
again have the opportunity to cast
their ballot in a federal election.
On March 21, a report done by a
committee of Members of
Parliament found that the
Conservative government was in
contempt of parliament. The report
cited the government’s failure to
produce all requested documents or
provide a satisfactory explanation
for withholding them and con-
cluded that the Conservative gov-
ernment’s actions impeded the
ability of MPs to carry out their du-
ties, and were therefore in contempt
of Parliament.
On March 25, the Conservative
Party’s government was defeated in
a confidence vote. The motion,
which was tabled by the Liberals
and supported by the Bloc
Quebecois and the New Democratic

or risk instability.

Immigration Minister Jason Kenney,
Harper and Kenney repeated that

A refugee’s gratitude, a student’s hope

First and foremost, I would like to say
thank you for the people and the gov-
ernment of Canada in general and my
fellow Canadian students and the
Group for Refugees at the University
of Regina in particular. They are not
only sponsoring me to come from the
refugee camp to Canada but also they
support, facilitate, and give me a
chance to continue my further educa-
tion at the University of Regina. As a
result of this, I came to the University
of Regina in 2006 from one of the
largest refugee camps in Africa,
Kakuma Refugee Camp, through
World University Service Canada
(WUSC). Currently, I am a fourth year
student of International Studies at the
University of Regina in the faculty of
arts.
WUSC matters a lot and changes
the lives of those poorest of the poor
Refugees across the globe. It is a non-
profit organization which consists of
individuals and post-secondary insti-
tutions across Canada. Its main goal is
to “foster human development and
global understanding through educa-
tion and training”. Particularly, the or-
ganization supports refugee students,
who are fleeing war or persecution,
in order to continue their post- sec-
ondary education at Canadian univer-
sities and colleges.
I fled from my country in search
of peace and freedom mainly due to
repression and persecution by the
government in my home country,
Ethiopia. For this reason, I have been
in one of the largest refugee camps in
Africa, Kakuma Refugee Camp, for
four years. It consists of over 80,000
refugees from nine African countries.
My life in the refugee camp was very
mixed – most difficult and painful for
various reasons on the one hand, and
full of valuable experiences on the
other.
In the camp basic needs were met
with one meal a day. It was full of
malaria and poisonous insects, had
security problems from bandits, had
very harsh climatic conditions, had
no employment or chance to move
from one place to the other. It was
simply an open prison house. On the
other hand, refugee camp became an
exceptional school for various rea-
sons. The refugee way of life has
helped me to understand, to interact,
and to communicate with various cul-
tures easily regardless of other differ-
ences. Due to firsthand experiences, I
feel and consider the injustices, the
misery, and the difficulties of others
like mine.
Thanks to the people and the gov-
ernment of Canada, particularly spe-
cial thanks to my fellow Canadian
students and the Group for Refugees
at the University of Regina, my life is
saved and changed in a number of
ways. Immediately after my arrival in
Regina, I joined English as a Second
Language for nine months. Despite
my lack of interest in joining ESL at
the beginning, in the end I enjoyed it.
I got valuable knowledge and unfor-
gettable experience from my fellow
students and from lovely instructors.
After ESL, I joined U of R in 2007.
I enjoy a wonderful life at the U of R
due to a family-like way of life from
fellow students and from very helpful
University professors. Currently, I am
very interested in studying
International Studies in the faculty of
Arts. In addition to my interest, I
strongly believe that at the moment
and in the years to come, our major
concerns and interests are global in
nature so I and the rest of my fellow
students will contribute our best for
the betterment of our world.
The last but not the least, it is be-
yond my words to appreciate and to
say
thank you to the people and the gov-
ernment of Canada on the one hand
and my fellow students and the
Group for Refugees at the U of R on
the other for what they are doing for
me and for those who are in need
across the world. At the same time, it
will be one of the great responsibilities
in my life to do whatever is necessary
for the people and the government of
Canada in particular and for the rest
of the world in general.

SASKATOON (CUP) — When stu-
dents know their university is facing
a budget crisis they are willing to ac-
cept both tuition increases and
budget cuts, according to a new
study.
Higher Education Strategy
Associates found that when asked to
consider a university’s situation in
dealing with a budget crisis, most stu-
dents are willing to see their tuition
rise.
Slightly more than 50 per cent of
students responding would accept an
increase in tuition between $3,000
and $9,000. Only one student in six
said they wanted tuition frozen at any
cost.
Over one third of students would
accept a five per cent tuition increase
if it were coupled with budget cuts of
7.5 per cent, and another third said a
tuition increase of 10 per cent and
budget cuts of five per cent would be
acceptable.
Given these facts, it seems
strange that students would greet
each tuition increase or budget cut
with anger, though they frequently
do. Perhaps, then, the issue is one of
awareness. If students do not realize
their institution is in a dire financial
situation, they may think they are
simply being bilked of money they
feel they need more than their school
does.
James Eastham, vice-president
academic at the University of
Alberta’s students’ union, disagrees.
“I would say that the current situa-
tion that we have [at the U of A] with
all of the consultation that we get is
very good at helping us to under-
stand why the university is in the po-
sitions that they are,” he said. “But I
don’t necessarily think that it will
make us happy that tuition is going
up or that budgets are being cut.”
The University of Manitoba’s stu-
dents’ union president Heather
Laube said in a recent email that de-
spite being involved in planning the
U of M’s budget each year, students
“unfortunately are often a minority
voice on the [budget advisory] com-
mittee,” especially when asking for
lower tuition.
Laube said she finds the main
benefit to sitting on the committee is
not in directing policy and funding,
but in “obtaining advance informa-
tion on what the next year’s univer-
sity budget will look like.”
HESA’s study found that “while
[students] think it might be appro-
priate for a university to ask students
to pay more to close a budget gap,
they also want to see the pain
shared,” but as Laube explained, stu-
dents often feel they have little say in
how funds are actually allocated.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, univer-
sity administrators say their budget
planning process allows for ample
student input.
When Phillip Stack, associate
vice-president of risk management
services at the U of A, was asked
whether students are involved in
budget planning, his answer was
simply, “Absolutely.”
He continued by saying that “it’s
critical that students actively partici-
pate in the process.”
At the U of A, the presidents of
the undergraduate and graduate stu-
dents’ unions sit on several commit-
tees that see the budget, as well as
the university’s board of governors,
who approves the budget. There is
also a student-at-large position on the
board.
But on a board that has 21 mem-
bers, the three students would have
to convince several other members to
vote with them in order to achieve
anything.
It appears students – at least
members of students’ union execu-
tives and student councils – are kept
abreast of the changes taking place
in their school’s budget that may af-
fect them. However, whether stu-
dents actually have a voice that can
affect any change in those budgets is
another question, and it appears that
students and administrators have dif-
ferent answers to that question.
Until this is resolved, students
may be left wondering, in the wake of
tuition increases and budget cuts,
whether they could have been
avoided.

VICTORIA (CUP) — Nancy Thomson
can sleep better now, knowing that
the Yukon court system has backed
her decision not to reveal her confi-
dential sources.
The CBC news reporter in
Whitehorse was caught in a battle be-
tween journalists these past few
months, when Thomson aired a con-
troversial series of reports in an in-
vestigative radio series that aired in
2004 about drug and alcohol abuse in
Watson Lake, Yukon.
Local paper the Yukon News
picked up wind of the criticism
Thomson was receiving over the se-
ries and flew to her defence for ex-
celling in real investigative
journalism. But the heated editorial
that editor Richard Mostyn printed,
criticizing the critics and calling for
more action on the issues at hand,
landed the newspaper with a heavy
lawsuit from Watson Lake physician
Said Secerbegovic, who alleges the pa-
per defamed him.
In an effort to prove the informa-
tion correct, the Yukon paper asked
Thomson to provide evidence of her
sources – something she had sworn to
keep anonymous to the individual’s
interviewed.
“It is very unfortunate that a me-
dia outlet is trying to force another
journalist to reveal her sources,”
Arnold Amber of Canadian
Journalists for Free Expression told
media before the case was heard. “It’s
very difficult to do investigative re-
ports if people fear their identities will
be exposed if they blow the whistle on
what they believe are wrongdoings.
We hope that these important interests
will be taken into account in this
case.”
To the relief of the organization
and journalists everywhere, Thomson
was taken to court on March 21,
where the Yukon Supreme Court
sided with Thomson’s journalistic
moral, and allowed her to keep the
identities of her subjects undisclosed
as agreed by the deal struck over the
weekend by lawyers.
“We were able to assist, I think, in
identifying ways in which the appro-
priate facts could be put before the
court without having to imperil
Nancy Thomson or her sources,” Fred
Kozak, president of the Canadian
Media Lawyers Association and
Thomson’s lawyer, told media outside
court.
Thomson had spoken with 11
sources for her report on Watson Lake,
a town of about 1,500 in southern
Yukon. The report revealed that

the time that Watson Lake's sole doc-
tor was also the town’s only pharma-
cist.
“It's very good,” Thomson said
outside court after the agreement was
reached. “I mean, I would be hard-
pressed to do my job at all if I was not
able to protect sources.”

Sutherland was not available for com-
ment after the court results, though
he had previously expressed his de-
sire not to argue the case in the media.
He did add, however, that
Thomson had been nothing but sup-
portive with assisting in the newspa-
per’s case – with everything other
than disclosing her sources, of course.
“The information requested [had]
to be relevant in order to be ordered
revealed, but, in our view … it’s so
readily apparent and notorious that
it’s not worth challenging a constitu-
tionally protected right – freedom of
expression – to get it,” said Kozak.
“We’re not talking about secrets
here, but it was information given to
Ms. Thomson by people who said,
‘My story is important but I don’t
want to be revealed because my repu-
tation in this small community is on
the hook.’ And they only gave her that
info after she promised confidential-
ity.”
Now the Yukon News will have to
pay the CBC’s legal fees associated
with the case, according to the
agreement. The paper will await its

When University of Regina educa-
tion student Whitney Blaisdell had
to do a sculpture project for visual
arts professor Barbara Menaley ear-
lier this semester, she took inspira-
tion from Félix Gonzáles-Torres, the
Cuban-American sculptor whose lat-
ter pieces – like a pile of packaged
candy titled “Untitled (Public
Opinion)” – invited viewers to take
parts of the artwork home with them.
Blaisdell also took inspiration from
the story of Sadako, a Japanese girl
who was two years old when the
atom bomb dropped on her home-
town of Hiroshima on Aug. 6, 1945.
According to Japanese legend,
anyone who makes a thousand paper
cranes will be granted a wish. So af-
ter developing leukemia at the age
of 10, Sadako spent the rest of her
days in a nursing home, making
origami paper cranes. When she
started the assignment, Blaisdell got
the paper and set aside the time, and
started making her own cranes.
After Blaisdell’s project was dis-
played for one day in the fine arts
faculty, she suddenly found herself
with a thousand paper cranes and
nothing to do with them. When dis-
aster struck Japan on March 11, how-
ever, she – and her cranes – suddenly
had a purpose.
“[I figured] there’s not much I
could do, I don’t have enough money
to send over to actually make a dif-
ference,” Blaisdell remembered. “So I
just decided to, and it was also with
my manager [at Chapters] who kind
of gave me the idea of giving away
the cranes for donations.”

So Blaisdell began making more
origami cranes, first replacing the
white cranes which had been dam-
aged since finishing the class assign-
ment, then selecting more decorative
paper and making a new set of cranes
specifically for her new project. And
as of 6 a.m. on Wednesday, March 30,
the old and new cranes are hanging
from strings in Atlantis Coffee on
Victoria Avenue, for customers and
passersby to take home. All she’s ask-
ing in return is a minimum donation
of $2 to $5, all of which will go to re-
lief efforts for Japan.
Blaisdell explained that she’s dis-
playing the cranes at Atlantis because
it has more potential for foot traffic
and people who don’t know about
her project to make a donation. “I
just figured Atlantis is downtown.
It’s really accessible, and then not
only would people hopefully go to
see the cranes or to make a donation,
but they’ll also just get a lot of natu-
ral traffic. And maybe people will
just see it and want to participate a
little bit.”
Ease of access to the display was
important for her. Being a student,
Blaisdell understands how hard it is
for people on tight budgets to help
out in moments of international crisis
such the current hardships in Japan.
That’s why she chose a venue that
ordinary people frequent, one that is
already a part of many urban

“My parents and some people
that I’ve spoken to are like, ‘Don’t
put it at Atlantis, you should put it
at-’ and then started naming these
places that aren’t accessible to the
public or students ... I know a lot of
students don’t have, like, $150 to
send away to feel good about. But
this way, even if you make a $2 dona-
tion – if everybody only made a $2
donation and I actually managed to
give away all thousand, that’s $2,000
that you get to feel a part of. And I
think that, like, that just goes to show
that even the smallest donation can
make a big difference.”
In the most popular version of
Sadako’s story – Sadako and the
Thousand Paper Cranes, the 1977
retelling by Saskatchewan-born au-
thor Eleanor Coerr – the 12 year-old
only made it to 644 cranes. Her
friends and classmates finished the
rest. Then they raised the funds to
build a statue of Sadako holding a
golden origami crane in Hiroshima
Peace Park.
And every donation – no matter
how small – helped.
Vertigo Reading
Series soars high
Local writers’ showcase brings authors
and readers together

The Vertigo Reading Series is the only
one of its kind in Regina. In fact, it is
the only reading series in Regina, a
surprising fact considering Reginans
pride themselves on their artistic en-
deavors.
“The Vertigo Reading Series is a
platform for writers to share the work
that they’re doing,” said Kris
Brandhagen, administrator of the
Vertigo Reading Series, in an inter-
view before the show. “If the Vertigo
Reading Series didn’t exist, we
wouldn’t have these renowned writ-
ers coming to town ... We want to in-
crease literary awareness in Regina,
and give authors who are doing book
tours an audience.”
The series takes place once a
month at Orange Izakaya on
Robinson Street just off 13th Avenue,
though a dine-and-dasher at a recent
show has forced the series to move to
an unannounced location for their
next show. Informal and intimate,
Orange Izakaya lent itself nicely to
the small reading series, and it’s a
pity they’ll have to move. More than
one writer stepped away from the
mic that night to read their works to
the small audience of about 20 peo-
ple.
The series is free for anyone to
attend, and anyone to read. “It is for
any kind of writer, emerging or estab-
lished,” said Brandhagen. “People
seem to think that going to hear writ-
ers perform would be dry, but we’ve
had some really amazing perform-
ances come through and it’s been re-
ally exciting ... It’s not academic; it’s
about sharing creativity”

own fairy tale

“Fusion is where I began my profes-
sional theatre career, [and] having
learned these skills as a young per-
son is immensely helpful to me, now,
as a professional,” explained Judy
Wensel, one of the co-directors for
the Globe Theatre’s latest
Shumiatcher Sandbox Series work,
the Fusion Project.
The Fusion Project features a cast
of young people that are between
the ages of sixteen and nineteen. Not
only are they actors, but the writers
of the performance as well. “The
Fusion Project is a collaborative the-
atre creation project that the Globe
does every year for the past seven
years. Over the course of several
months, the group works together
to create a new show that is then
premiered as part of the Sandbox
Series.”
This year’s production will con-
trast youthful innocence with stark
reality. It features children living in
an adultless world. Wensel says that
“inspiration [was drawn] from such
classics as Heinrich Hoffman’s
Struwwelpeter – a collection of cau-
tionary children’s tales and the
world of “Dick and Jane” stories.
This year’s Fusion Project explores a
world imagined, ruled, and influ-
enced by children. It’s about chil-
dren living in a world without
adults, how they manage on their
own, and how these childlike per-

element into the Fusion Project was a
goal of the directors. By constructing
firm, definite characters in the pro-
duction stages, this was able to hap-
pen. “Every ensemble player plays a
really particular character, and then
[the audience] get[s] to follow the
stories of these characters over the
course of the show. Fusion pieces are
typically episodic pieces, but [co-di-
rector Lucy Hill and I] made it a goal
of ours this year to try to have some
really clear stories that we were try-
ing to tell, and I think that we were
successful in that; we understand
who these people are ... where they
are coming from, and what happens
to them.”
What’s so unique to the produc-
tion is fresh and animate character.
Changes to the production “happen
right up until opening night because
it’s a new work, and there’s this
great energy behind it because it’s so
fresh to the ensemble.” This con-
stantly evolving piece makes touch-
ing up and polishing the
performance particularly interesting,
with “some really interesting charac-
ters in the piece [coming] through
in the last week of rehearsal.”
By getting young people in-
volved in theatre, the Globe helps to
build and develop the skills of the
youth here in Regina. Doing so helps
to ensure the growth of the theatre
community in the city; thus, aspiring
theatre artists are no longer being
pushed away to larger cities. “The

artists, and I think the Fusion Project
was part of this goal of theirs to
make the Globe Theatre where

stands up, shakes his neighbour’s
hand, and begins walk to an elevated
platform. He is wearing a black cow-
boy hat, a black coat, and a red scarf.
He takes his time; he high-fives some
fans for a few moments, then gives
up and heads up to the platform. He
hugs Randy Bachman. He turns to a
microphone.
“Is this real?” he asks. “What
year is this?”
It is 2011, and Bachman has just
handed the Artist of the Year Juno
Award to 65-year-old Young, who re-
leased his 33rd studio album, Le
Noise, last year.
The Junos, now in their 40th year,
are meant to be a celebration of
Canadian music. While its previous
iterations have been lauded for an
arguable disconnect from real pop
culture, some saw this year as the in-
troduction of cool to the Junos. After
all, hip-hop giant Drake was to host,
and critical darlings the Arcade Fire
were nominated for a slew of awards.
In that sense, the system worked:
Arcade Fire walked away with four
awards, including Album, Group,
and Songwriter of the Year. Drake
was charming, despite being com-
pletely shut out by the awards – at

But much was missing. Rap
Album of the Year? Given out the
night before at a gala dinner. R&B
Album of the Year? Gala dinner.
Reggae? Country? Aboriginal? Rock?
Alternative? Jazz? Gala dinner, too.
Just about any reflection of any kind
of diversity of Canadian music – both
in terms of creators and consumers –
was left out of the official ceremony
to leave more space for the Justin
Biebers and Arcade Fires.
Of course, the ceremony only has
so many hours it can take up – two
and a half to be precise – and, in fair-
ness, is indeed meant to be a celebra-
tion, which is perhaps best done
through live performances by our
celebrated artists. Most of these were
delightful, though they skewed pre-
dominantly white and were largely
guitar-driven pop and rock, and were
completely anglophone.
The night’s other winners in-
cluded Meaghan Smith, for New
Artist of the Year; Justin Bieber, for
both Pop Album of the Year and Juno
Fan Choice Award; and Young Artists
for Haiti for Single of the Year, for an
adaptation of K’Naan’s “Wavin’
Flag”.

Sheen.”

over again. Never before has a fighting game
ever so perfectly captured the correct balance be-
tween accommodating the entry-level fighter
who never learned the correct sequence of but-
tons to pull off a hadouken (i.e. me) and the ex-
pert fighter who can learn strategies, memorize
combos, and essentially kick the ass of beginners
like myself (i.e. James). Simply pushing buttons
will result in shiny rainbow explosions, but for
those who crave a deeper experience, Marvel vs.
Capcom 3 delivers that in spades as well.
Outside of the game’s expert and solid fight-
ing mechanics, the main draw for Marvel vs.
Capcom 3 is the fighting list, bringing together a
diverse list of characters from the Marvel and
Capcom universes. Overall, Marvel’s list is the
stronger one, balancing a good selection of

are bizarre omissions, like the lack of Mega Man.
Marvel vs. Capcom 3 is most definitely a fan-
boy’s (or fangirl’s) game, then, but at least it has
the good sense to play up this aspect in its game-
play as much as possible. Sure, it’s not quite the
curio museum that something like, say, Super
Smash Bros. Brawl is, but it has some really awe-
some references to classic Marvel comics as well
as a terrific selection of alternate costumes. If
you’ve ever wanted to see Captain America
wear a Punisher outfit, well, you can do that
here. There’s not much to see outside of the
fighters themselves (you can unlock artwork
and cutscenes), but seeing the characters at all is
enough.
What will bring you back to Marvel vs.
Capcom 3 is its incredibly tight and fast game-
play, making for a game that’s perfect for high-
level tournament play as well as a fun way to
beat up on friends. Unless your friend is James.

Despite the pages of statistics, thousands of dif-
ferent items to collect, spells to learn, and ene-
mies to slay, Torchlight’s appeal lies entirely in
two aspects: mindless killing and the acquisition
of goods. This approach has its merits, but don’t
go into Torchlight expecting anything to mean
anything.
You name your warrior and choose from
three different classes: the up-close and personal
melee warrior, the ranged weapons expert, and
the mage. From there, you have to set out into
the catacombs beneath the town of Torchlight
and discover the source of the “ember poison-
ing” that is killing both the town and yourself.
This story is told entirely through porten-
tous narration and scrolling text, recalling the
heyday of PC RPGs from the mid-90s. That’s a
very deliberate choice, as Runic Games (the cre-
ators of Torchlight) are comprised of several ex-
staffers from Blizzard and seem to have a real
affinity for Diablo.
Ultimately, though, Torchlight is pretty un-
derwhelming, mainly because of its staunch re-
classic Gauntlet). It’s a completely mindless expe-
rience, as you kill wave after wave of enemy, not
really requiring very much skill or foresight,
only persistence.
That’s not to say it’s not strangely satisfying.
Much like Diablo, the real “carrot” for gamers is
the collection of the various pieces of armor and
weaponry that you gain by killing enemies.
Unfortunately, Torchlight lacks any multiplayer
(an oversight being rectified in the sequel), so
this acquisition is a fairly meaningless affair. It’s
only cursorily tied to your progression, and it ba-
sically turns what should be an epic quest into a
scavenger hunt.
And just like Diablo, Torchlight is defined by
how mindless it is. It’s a really good way to
blow off steam after work. The problem is that
there’s literally nothing in this game that hasn’t
been done better by Diablo, except that Diablo is-
n’t on the 360 (yet). If you’re jonesing for a sim-
ple hack-and-slash, you could certainly do
worse, but don’t expect anything resembling an
intellectual experience.

Over the past 7 years we have seen a
massive shift in the medium by which
information is shared. Written letters
has been replaced by sending email,
CD sales being swallowed by MP3s,
cell phones are better described as mo-
bile computers, and TV is slowly los-
ing ground to video streaming
websites all over the world. The inter-
net has quickly become the go-to
medium for people to express them-
selves through writing, music, and
video.
Our generation has been affection-
ately dubbed by some as the “YouTube
generation”. Millions upon millions of
viewers flood to the web every day to
watch anything from legitimate short
films, to clips captured by a camera

The Homeless Man With a Golden Voice (2010)
Of all the viral videos in existence, this
one has the most heart-warming story
to go along side. Ted Williams, a home-
less man from Columbus, Ohio, was
captured on video performing his
golden radio voice for a videographer
from Columbus Dispatch. The video
displayed Williams doing voiceovers,
much like what you would hear dur-
ing radio commercial breaks. His crisp,
booming voice was shockingly radio-
worthy, and unsurprisingly word
spread very quickly about the home-
less man with the golden pipes.

“Star Wars Kid” (2002)
For most of us, watching someone
make an ass of himself is an irresistible
opportunity to feel slightly better
about ourselves. There is something
oddly satisfying about watching some
obscure event and asking yourself
“what the hell is this guy thinking?”
For people who enjoy the misery of
others, Star Wars Kid is a classic, a pre-
YouTube classic in fact. The video de-
picts a young high school student from
Quebec wielding a golf ball retriever
around like a light-sabre.
The video was filmed in the stu-
dent’s high school film studio.

the world, right behind Google and
Facebook.
Although posting videos online
wasn’t an impossible task before
YouTube’s inception, it was much
more difficult, and therefore much less
appealing and widespread. With its
simple interface, YouTube allowed in-
terested users to post videos online
with relative ease. The accessibility of
the website allowed for anyone, any-
where, to post whatever they wanted
– for the world to see.
The result of this was explosive
and people started uploading like
madmen. YouTube allowed everyone,
not simply the computer savvy, to dis-
play their creative talents or even just
a funny moment in their lives. They
could express their views on a video
blog, or post a video of their kids play-
ing hockey.

quests from news stations around the
US. Next came job offers, a lot of them.
Williams eventually decided to work
for MSNBC and Kraft Foods doing
voiceovers. Not bad for a man who
was homeless just a short time ago.
The media had a field day with
the Williams story, telling the world
about his struggles and his rise to
fame. The attention from large broad-
casting corporations like MSNBC also
allowed Williams to be reunited with
his mother, who he hadn’t seen in

cidently left in the studio and one of
his classmates found it and converted
it to an electronic file on his computer.
The video was then distributed around
the school before one student started to
post it on P2P applications such as
Limewire.
The video became an instant cult
favourite and a huge underground

fact. The student in the video, who has
had his identity concealed, issued a
lawsuit for the emotional damage he
endured during the video’s popularity
YouTube also created an easy av-
enue for millions users to find content
to watch. Not only was it easy to up-
load content, it was easy for people to
access it whenever they wanted. The
accessibility of the content allowed for
popular videos to spread via word of
mouth quickly and easily. A friend
could tell another about something
they had seen, and that person could
view the content within seconds. In
today’s age of smartphones, you don’t
even have to be at a computer to view
a popular video.
The most popular videos on
YouTube are some of the most-
watched content in the entire world,
with some gaining millions of views
over a few days.
When someone finds a hit video
on YouTube, others find out, fast. This
has lead to the popularization of the
term “viral video”, comparing the way
a virus spreads from one person to an-
years.
This might be the best feel-good
story of them all, the world watched as
a man went from a homeless, de-
pressed drug addict, to a man who has
been reunited with his mother and liv-
ing his dreams of becoming a success-
ful voiceover artist. Just a plain old
feel-good story, not to mention great
PR for MSNBC and Kraft Food.
And most importantly, this sends a
message to all the other homeless peo-
ple out there: you need an act.

For almost as long as it was possi-
ble for upload videos to the internet,
people having been capturing what-
ever they see and posting it online for
the world to enjoy. This has resulted in
fame for some, humiliation for others,
and most importantly, entertainment
for viewers.

“The Bed Intruder Song” (2010)
Leave it to the YouTube generation to
turn something like a news report on
an attempted rape into one of the
most popular music videos of the
year. What is now known as “the Bed
Intruder Song” started out as a rou-
tine news report on the attempted
rape of a young woman named Kelly
Dodson. An interview with Kelly’s
brother Antoine was posted to
YouTube as part of the news station’s
YouTube channel. Two days after the
video was posted, a group of musi-
cians who call themselves The
Gregory Brothers remixed and auto-
tuned the interview into a song; it
went viral within days. Millions of
people flooded to YouTube to watch
Dodson’s passionate and flamboyant
interview remixed to a beat. The
video started to make its way into
Billboard charts around the world,
topping at number 89 on Billboard’s
Hot 100, and selling over 100,000
thousand copies on iTunes.
The effects of the video were pro-
found, immediately skyrocketing
Antoine and the Gregory Brothers

around a broomstick like a light-sabre,
or the remixed interview of a ghetto

have the proven ability to eclipse any
mainstream media in popularity and
provide their creators with fame and
fortune in a relatively short amount of
time.
In light of YouTube’s most recent
viral hit “Friday”, a gut-wrenching
pop tune created by “artist” Rebecca
Black, the Carillon has compiled a list
of the most popular viral internet hits
from the past decade. Some of them
are funny, others ugly, and some of
them are downright weird. But, for
whatever the reason, these videos and
Internet memes have slowly worked
their way into the fabric of our pop
culture.
Internet celebrity overnight, doing ra-
dio interviews all over the world and
live performances at events such as
the 2010 BET awards.
In January of this year it was an-
nounced via MSN that Dodson had
begun filming a pilot episode for a
new reality show, following him and
his family on their move to L.A. and
Dodson’s attempt to capitalize on his
newfound fame.
People can now buy “Bed
Intruder” costumes modeled after the
outfit that Dodson was wearing at the
time of the interview, other merchan-
dise such as t-shirts, imitation do-
rags, wigs, and iPhone apps are being
sold to capitalize on the video’s noto-
riety.
Although the massive popularity
of this video has died down signifi-
cantly, the impact it had on the
Dodson family and The Gregory
Brothers has changed their lives per-
manently. If you need an indication of
how powerful a viral video can be in
today’s day and age, you need look
no further than “The Bed Intruder
Song.”

“The Numa Numa Dance” (2004)
This is the video responsible for the
Numa Numa phenomenon. A man
named Gary Brolsma decided to re-
lease a video of himself lip-syncing to
the song “Dragostea din tei” by the
band O-Zone. What was intended to be
a silly waste of time turned into a mas-
sive Internet hit and one of the most
widespread internet memes in history.
The video is a short clip of Brolsma
dancing and enthusiastically lip-sync-
ing to the words of the O-Zone track
before the video cuts off mid-song. But
the short minute and a half was
enough to get the job done; it was a
monster hit.
The video was originally posted to
the website Newgrounds; after that it
was copied to hundreds of others. To
date, it is estimated that the video has
been viewed over 700 million times,
trailing only “Star Wars Kid”.

Peanut Butter Jelly Time (2002)

the song “Peanut Butter Jelly Time” is
now one of the most popular and rec-
ognizable Internet phenomenons in the
world.
The video shows a repetitive, pix-
elated, dancing banana gyrating and
fist pumping his way around a screen
to the tune of the Buckwheat Boyz
song “Peanut Butter Jelly Time”.
Maybe it is the repetitive nature of
the song. Or maybe it’s the idea that
there is a banana dancing to a song
called “Peanut Butter Jelly Time”.

“Leeroy Jenkins” (2007)
With the massive popularity of the on-
line multiplayer RPG World of
Warcraft, it seems like it was only a
matter of time before the game pro-
duced a massive Internet meme to go
along with it.
The video was released to YouTube
by a Warcraft players guild named
“PALS FOR LIFE” and immediately
became famous, not only in the
Warcraft community, but in the main-
stream media as well.
The video depicts the guild mem-
bers carefully discussing detailed bat-
tle plan for an imminent assault on
their enemies; but, one of their mem-
bers, Leeroy, was away from his com-
puter. Leeroy returns, completely
ignorant of the strategy, and runs into
the battle screaming “Leeeeroy
Jenkins!” This subsequently ruined the
carefully planned attack for the others.
As Leeroy dives into the battle, his
guild mates chase after him in a
swirling sea of confusion. Everyone is
America, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,
and VH1’s The Best Week Ever.
According to the New York Times,
Brolsma was turned off by the idea of
becoming a media celebrity and can-
celled several media appearances,
keeping himself out of the spotlight
for several years.
Brolsma reappeared years later in
a Vizio ad during the Superbowl, and
even conducted a band to play the
song at halftime during an NCAA col-
lege football game. “Numa Numa
Dance” has also been seen and men-
tioned in shows like NCIS and South
Park as well. In Brolsma’s case, becom-
ing famous was as simple as turning
on his headphones, a web camera, and
letting his inner nerd run wild on
screen – just like that, permanently in-
grained in pop culture.
Whatever the reason, PBJT was a mas-
sive Internet hit.
The song is incredibly easy to re-
member as well; if you can remember
the title, you can remember the song,
because that’s pretty much the whole
thing. “PEANUT BUTTER JELLY TIII-
IME!” rinse and repeat.
The song’s creators, The
Buckwheat Boyz, turned the song into
some minor success, such as an open-
ing gig for rapper Nas. But the fame
didn’t last, and The Buckwheat Boyz’s
15 minutes of fame ran out a long time
ago.

Armed Forces Journal. “Leeroy” Easter
eggs and achievements have been per-
manently added to the World of
Warcraft game.
Ben Schulz, the creator of the char-
acter, was invited to BlizzCon 2007 to
speak about the creation of the video
and how it all happened. When asked
if the video was staged, Schulz replied,
“No, we were all drinking 40s and

Getting Rickrolled
OK, this isn’t really a single viral
video, but it is one hell of an Internet
meme using a YouTube video.
“Rickrolling” as it is known, is a bait-
and-switch where a user clicks on a

“Charlie Bit My Finger” (2007)
I don’t know what is so funny about
a young baby biting the finger of his
older brother, but apparently 286 mil-
lion people do. The video “Charlie Bit
My Finger” is the most popular ama-
teur video on YouTube.

“Afro Ninja” (2006)
Who doesn’t like watching someone
fall flat on their face? No one! That
would explain why “Afro Ninja”
went viral. The video is leaked
footage of an audition reel for a Nike
commercial with LeBron James and
famous martial artist Jim Kelly. Mark
Hicks, the “Afro Ninja”, is seen in the
some as “the funniest 6 minutes you
will ever see.” That’s up for debate,
but the video is freaking hilarious
nonetheless.
“The Evolution of Dance” fea-
tures a man named Judson Laipply
dancing his way through a progres-
sion of 12 popular dance songs while
link, thinking that it’s relevant, and
boom, they are greeted by the video
for Rick Astley’s song “Never Gonna
Give You Up”. At that point, the user
has been rickrolled.
The idea is simple enough; the
two boys are sitting in a chair, the
younger one bites his older brother’s
finger, and then seemingly grins at
his handiwork while he brother
screams “Charlie bit me!” in a thick
video attempting to do a back flip fol-
lowed by an impressive display of his
nunchuck skills. Instead, Hicks, who
was apparently suffering from jetlag,
botched the opening flip by landing
on his face, not his feet. Hicks, se-
verely concussed and confused, at-
tempted to get back to his feet and

a crowd in the background cheers
him on. The clip is pretty impressive.
The balls it takes to get on stage and
dance like Laipply did is worth some
respect. All of the dance moves in the
video go hand in hand with the time
period of the songs playing, and
Liapply pulls them off quite well.
Liapply’s video has earned him
appearances in BBC commercials, in-
terviews on the show Rude Tube, and
a quick showing in a Weezer music
video. Like Leeroy Jenkins, “The
Evolution of Dance” was used as a
clue on Jeopardy. The popular TV
show The Office also paid homage to
the video when the character Andy
did the dance in an attempt to dis-
tract another character.
Before “Charlie Bit My Finger”,
this was the most-watched YouTube
clip in the world, as well as the high-
est-rated and most-discussed.
The act of rickrolling has made
its way across all corners of the
Internet, and even into public events
such as basketball games and pa-
rades. It is arguably the most conta-
gious theme for a bait-and-switch
ever made. On the Internet, rick-
rolling has become a harmless way to
pull a fast one on absolutely anyone.
The great thing about rickrolling is
that it’s nearly impossible to see it
coming.
This technique has even been
used to illuminate security defaults
in websites like Facebook and PayPal,
to prank call news and radio call-in
shows, and even to make a copycat
website that tricked users with a sim-
ilar domain name to a popular
Scientologist website, then hit them
with some Rick Astley upon arrival.

As the numbers show, this was
another monster hit. Debuting in
2007, the video has averaged six mil-
lion hits a month for the last four
years. The baby-on-baby crime was
ranked as the number one viral video
of all time by Time magazine.
Although the parents of the two
boys have said that they do not want
to commercialize their children by
creating merchandise with their faces
on it, some web experts estimated that
they could have made around 100,000
euros from advertisements played
during the video alone.
The boys now have their own
video blog online. The blog captures
all the riveting drama in the lives of
three-year-olds; and yes, it gets mil-
lions of hits per episode. According to
their mother, the boys are just begin-
ning to learn about what they are a
part of.

he won. He is also making a film ti-
tled Afro Ninja, and has made an ap-
pearance on the Tonight Show to
discuss the video. Although Hicks has
never embraced the video, claiming
that it has only made things harder
for him, it is certainly a viral video
that will be forever etched in Internet
culture.

Taking an in-depth look at the University of Regina cheerleading
team and its amazing season

The U of R cheerleading squad celebrates its collegiate small co-ed team national championship, having added another national title and one international title this season

The University of Regina cheerlead-
ing team has had plenty of reasons to
cheer this season.
And now, with the season
wrapped up, the squad has the chance
to sit back and properly reflect on all of
its accomplishments. This season, the
U of R won an international title, two
national titles, had a couple other top
finishes, raised a lot of money, and
even hosted its own successful cheer-
leading competition.
Suffice it to say, for an organiza-
tion that had previously only won two
national titles since it started up in
2000, this year was one for the record
books.
“I would say this is one of the best
years the U of R has had as a pro-
gram,” said Thomas Rath, the U of R’s
cheerleading head coach. “There have
been some very exciting years before,
but we’ve progressively grown more
competitive each year. We’re definitely
growing every year in talent.”
“It’s so exciting,” said Ashley
Herchak, a rookie on the cheer squad.
“Once you win something on this
level, it makes you feel really good
and that you’re really part of a team.”
The first competition Regina took
part in this year was the 2010 univer-
sity and open national cheerleading
championships in Brampton, Ont.,
early in December. It was an event
which boasted 19 collegiate teams
from across Canada. The U of R com-
peted in two divisions: collegiate small
co-ed team (small schools with both
boys and girls) and collegiate quad
(four members compete). Regina
picked up a national title in each.
In the five-team small co-ed team
division, the U of R racked up 783.5
points to finish almost 40 points ahead
of the next competitor. They scored
83.5 points and finished over 10 points
ahead of second-place Carleton in the
three-team collegiate quad division. It
was not only the first time the U of R
has picked up multiple national titles
during the same meet, but it was
Regina’s second national title in both
of the divisions ever.
“The celebration after was pretty
fun,” said Rath. “It’s always good to
come home with two national titles
under your belt.
“Nationals have always been big
for me – trying to represent your
school within Canada. It’s something
huge for me and something I take a lot
of pride in.”
After taking the rest of December
off for finals and holidays, the cheer
squad began preparing for two inter-
national competitions in February. The
first was the Cheersport nationals, Feb.
18-20, in Atlanta, Ga., followed by the
USA collegiate nationals, Feb. 26-28,
in Anaheim, Cali.
At the Cheersport nationals,
which is the biggest cheerleading com-
petition in the world, there were
around 20,000 athletes and over 1,000
teams this year. The U of R was in the
collegiate co-ed team level 6 division.
Regina finished fourth out of six
teams. Rath was happy with the
team’s performance, especially be-
cause of some of the circumstances
they were up against.
“At Cheersport, we were up
against teams that have 10 or 12 guys
and we only have one,” he said. “A lot
of co-ed teams down there take as
many guys to competitions as possi-
ble. To get fourth is a testament to how
good our team is.
“Also, I don’t even think some of
the schools were schools. There was
the University of Louisville Gym Time.
The Gym Time at the end of it means
it’s an all-star team. They take some
athletes who aren’t in college and stick
them on the collegiate team. It’s a little
fishy.”
Next, the U of R achieved an inter-
national milestone at the USA nation-
als, which included hundreds of
teams. Regina’s collegiate group stunt
team finished first out of three teams,
helping Regina capture its first inter-
national title ever. Regina’s small co-ed
team also broke a record, earning the
school’s highest international team fin-
ish ever, as they finished third in the
five-team divison.
“Winning our first international ti-
tle was a pretty huge victory for us,
but the third-place finish was just as
big in my mind,” said Rath. “Those
teams down in the States can come
from different breeds. They live it –
“ It’s so exciting. Once you win something on this level, it makes
you feel really good and that you’re really part of a team.”

they start it early on and they have
highly competitive teams early on.
Some schools in the States have amaz-
ing teams in elementary school. We
don’t really get highly competitive
teams until high school. The States
breeds awesome cheerleaders.”
A young team
What makes the success of the U of R
cheer team even more unbelievable is
their lack of collegiate experience.
The team is made up of approxi-
mately 23 members, and 15 of these
are rookies. Out of the 15 rookies, 13
are in their first year. In this case, it
looks like youth has trumped experi-
ence.
“Did I expect us to win nationally
and internationally? No, I actually did-
n’t think we’d pull it off that well,”
said Rath. “With so many rookies, I
didn’t think we’d win much. I
thought, maybe if I could retain all of
these rookies for the 2011-12 season
we could win nationals. Lo and be-
hold, they did it this year. It’s a pretty
rocking year for a lot of those rookies
to be on this good of a team.”
Of course, though they are labeled
as a rookie, it does not mean these
members of the U of R squad were in-
experienced. Many of the cheerleaders
had previous experience, whether it
was at the high school level or a club.
Plus, the inviting atmosphere created
by Regina’s veterans helped the rook-
ies adapt.

As a rookie, Herchak certainly no-
ticed it.
“It wasn’t that bad of an adjust-
ment, because all of the veterans were
really nice and super helpful,” said the
18-year-old arts student. “It’s not hos-
tile at all at practice. Everyone’s there
to help everyone else. It was mostly a
fun experience.”
The athletes were not the only
ones on the team with a lack of colle-
giate experience. It was the first full
year of coaching at the collegiate level
for Rath, who was a member of the
cheerleading team as an athlete from
2004-08. The same holds true for his
two assistant coaches: Janessa Rath
(his wife), who was on the team from
05-09 and Jade Baiton, who competed
on the team in the 05-06 campaign.
“I was an assistant coach for the
second half of last year,” said Rath. “I
stepped in last year because their head
coach Nicole Bidwell had to leave
halfway during the season. I stepped
in with her assistant coach at the time,
Mishayla Potts, and we kind of did the
remaining part of the year. It was good
because I got my feet wet and then
was able to overhaul a lot of the inter-
nal stuff.
“Our coaching staff this year has
worked awesome together. We all
have a slight different style. Some are
nice and some are mean. It balances
out quite nice.”
It appears that Regina has sent a
message to the cheerleading world: if
you want to win, go with rookies.

Lots of hard work
If there is anyone who thinks the suc-
cess of the U of R cheerleading squad
has come easily, they are sorely mis-
taken.
It has taken a lot of hard work and
dedication. Members of the team have
to attend practices, fundraise and help
out in the community, all the while at-
tending classes and jobs.
The life of a cheerleader is hardly a
cakewalk, though this is not exactly
the common perception of them.
“I never think we get enough credit,”
said Herchak. “People think cheer-
leading’s kind of like a dance-y sport
and nothing is really involved in it.
They assume we’re like the people
who cheer on the sidelines. We do this,
but most people don’t realize what
stunting involves and how far cheer-
leading has actually come since just
standing on the sideline.
“[Being a cheerleader] can be hectic.
It’s really hard to balance university in
itself, plus cheerleading, plus your so-
cial life.”
Cheerleading is basically an 11-
month season for the U of R. The team
holds several camps and clinics dur-
ing the summer months. Once school
gets underway, they practice three
times a week for a few hours at a time.
Most of the training is cheerleading-
specific. Throw in a couple of compe-
titions during the season, and it is
clear to see that there are a lot of phys-
ical elements to cheerleading.
“We’re lifting people – it’s not like
we’re just dancing around,” said
Herchak. “You need some type of ath-
leticism to do what we do.”
Perhaps an even bigger burden
than the training involved is the
money. While the U of R, the U of R
Students’ Union and various corpora-
tions sponsor the team, members of
the team are expected to each shell out
$1,000-2,000 from their own pocket for
various expenses. Because of this,
many of the cheerleaders have to work
jobs to pay for cheerleading, school
and other expenses.
According to Rath, it comes with
the program.
“[Cheerleading’s] unfortunately
considered a student club. It’s not re-
ally an official team of the university,
so we’re not in the budget,” he said.
“There are no official dollars to go to
us. I’m more than willing to make this
a core program. I would love to be a
full-time coach of this team and for it
to be a full program.”
The expenses would be vastly
more for the cheerleading team if it
did not fundraise consistently.
“We host our own camp for high
school and elementary teams, get
some money for Rams games, make
community appearances, do car-

Rath. “We’re not below anything.”
The team’s major fundraiser is the
U of R cheerleading competition, a
tournament they host for elementary,
high school, club, and other teams
across Saskatchewan and neighbour-
ing provinces. At this year’s tourna-
ment, held in March, around 2,000
spectators and 1,000 competitors
turned up.
When it comes down to it, cheer-
leading is a huge time commitment.
Not just for the athletes, but the
coaches as well. All three have to work
other jobs while coaching.
Rath summed up what it was like
to be a cheerleader.
“I don’t like to call [cheerleaders]
athletes in a sport. They’re athletes in
sports 15
a lifestyle,” he said. “They live it be-
cause they have to. You almost have to
really want to be on the team so much
to offer what they do and sacrifice
some of that extra social time and free-
dom. There’s a lot of sacrifice there.”
Becoming a member
The U of R cheerleading team has
done some great things for Rath.
“The cheerleading team is where I
met Jade. We started dating that year
and eventually got married,” he said.
“The cheer team has given me so
much. Pretty much all of my friends
now are cheerleaders and my wife’s a
cheerleader. It’s in my blood now. “
And, while Rath cannot promise
you will meet your future partner on
the team, there are plenty of other rea-
sons to get involved on the U of R
cheer team.
“It’s really fun,” he said. “These
guys sacrifice a lot, but they wouldn’t
if it wasn’t one of the most enjoyable
things that they are doing in their life.
The team is great, and the sport is re-
ally fun. I’ve been in all kinds of differ-
ent sports from basketball, rugby,
football – the macho man kind of
sports – and this is by far one of the
funnest things I’ve done. I know all of
the athletes enjoy their time. We try to
do as many team bonding activities
as we can and I know a lot of these
girls make friendships.
“There’s a lot of alumni out there
and there’s a good community behind
us. You’re not just friends with the cur-

“We’re definitely a family,” added
Herchak. “Even if you don’t have ex-
perience, it’s fun to come out and learn
something different. Going to places
like Atlanta and Anaheim for compe-
titions is super fun. It involves so
many athletic aspects like tumbling,
dancing and stunting. It’s just a great
experience for everyone ... boys in-
cluded.”
This year, the U of R cheer squad
is holding tryouts for everyone – cur-
rent members included – on April 30,
noon to 4 p.m., at the main gym. A
second tryout is to be held on May 8,
4-6 p.m., at the Rebels Cheerleading
facility at 296 Henderson Drive. It is
possible to make the team as a walk-
on during the season, but Rath advises
attending these tryouts if possible. For

“I definitely agree with that,” said
Herchak “We had a really good year
and we had a lot of rookies on the
team. All of the rookies are going to be
veterans now. Everyone knows their
place and they can help each other
out. The more experience you have,
the better it’s going to be.”

TORONTO (CUP) — Running from
one side of the squash court to the
other, Shannon Cosgrove chases a

“[Practicing in the squash courts]
really teaches us how to defend and
makes our touches better,” said
Cosgrove, a first-year midfielder for
the Ryerson Rams women’s soccer
team. “It helps us work on out-think-
ing defenders.”
Cosgrove works on speed, pass-
ing, and defending skills twice a week
at the Recreation and Athletic Centre
on campus. Soccer is just one of
Ryerson’s many CIS teams that look
to boost their strength and condition-
ing in the off-season.
In her next drill, Cosgrove has to
dribble the ball around a cone as an-
other teammate does the same on the
opposite side. The goal is to try and
fake out the cone, which represents an
opposing player, with a powerful
sidestep.
“Basically, what we’re doing is
working on a fundamental skill set ...
in position-specific drills,” said Kevin
Souter, assistant coach of the men’s
soccer team, who is currently training
with the women. “The goal is to pro-
vide a strong foundation for the up-
coming season.”
The players on the women’s soc-
cer team train anywhere between 1–3
hours a week.
“During the summer, [the] ma-
jority of them are playing with their
own team like the Markham Soccer
Club,” women's soccer interim coach
Ramin Mohammadi said. “If not, we
try to book a field and try to play
against other clubs with players
which are available.”
Those who are not playing for a
club team schedule training sessions
that focus more on agility, speed, and
strength, as well as body movements.
“It doesn’t really matter where they
do it as long as they can compete
come Aug. 15,” Mohammadi said.
“They need to keep up with the fit-
ness program if they want to stay in
the program.”
Stephanie White, head coach of
the school’s women’s hockey team,
said proper off-season training is a
vital component to a successful team.
“The off-season is the time for the
biggest gains in your conditioning
and overall fitness,” White said.
“During the season, you don’t really
have the opportunity [to train]. It’s
really important that they stick to the
task at hand and it’s only going to
improve their game throughout the
season.”
This year marks the first time the
women’s hockey team will take part
in a serious summer training pro-
gram, as they will officially take on
Ontario University Athletics status
for the upcoming season.
But, unlike most off-season train-
ing programs that have athletes train-
ing two to four times a week, White’s
program will have her players prac-
ticing up to six times a week.
“You do fitness testing to see
where they are at the end of the sea-
son. And then when they come back
at the end of the season, that’s where
you’re going to see the gains,” she
said. “If there are no improvements, it
could be conditions for the athlete not
to make the team.”
While not as intense as White’s
program, men’s volleyball head coach
Mirek Porosa has a very structured
program.
Starting in March, each player
practices three times a week for an
hour and a half. This time is spent fo-
cusing on upper body and lower core
exercises, as well as endurance.
Porosa said 80 per cent of his
team usually comes back in better
shape than they were in last year.
“When they’re coming back, they
should jump higher – like four or six
inches - and they should be faster and
stronger,” said Porosa. “They’re
charging the batteries for the next sea-
son. Some of them go to school [in
the summer] so they have a smaller
load for the next school year.”
While coaches like Porosa have
their players abide by a very struc-
tured training program, the same
can't be said about their eating habits,
as there isn’t a strict nutritional pro-
gram for them to follow.
“They have basic information
that they get during the season, which
is based on some knowledge and
common sense,” said Porosa. “But it’s
hard to monitor their eating habits
during the off-season because they
are in a different environment.
They’re going back home, working
and doing what other people do at
this young age.”
Jenny Young, captain of the
women’s hockey team, said that al-
though there hasn’t been a set nutri-
tion program, her has met with a
nutritionist this year.
“We’ve had meetings with a nu-
tritionist and she’s given us informa-
tion based on what we weigh and
how we should be eating,” she said.
“I’m definitely going to try and eat
well along with maintaining a solid
weight routine.”
Cosgrove is also looking forward
to the summer months of hard train-
ing.
“We have our priorities set and
we just want to work hard to become
champions next year.”

Train like
an athlete
Step 1: Get the right apparel
Before you can start training like
an athlete, you’ll need to dress
like one. Proper footwear is es-
sential, and any sweats will
work, but I would recommend
that you invest in Under
Armour. While a bit more ex-
pensive than its competitors,
Under Armour’s light and
durable material is worth the
extra few bucks.
Step 2: Cardio, cardio, cardio
While you may want to go
straight to the weight room to
work on your gun show, do
yourself a favour and start with
some cardio. You can pump all
the iron in the world, but you
won’t see any results unless you
get your heart rate up. If you’re
not a fan of the treadmill, sta-
tionary bike, or elliptical ma-
chine, go to the gymnasiums
and play a few pickup games of
basketball, soccer, or whatever
sport the other gym goers are
playing.
Step 3: Pre-game
Before you even think about lift-
ing a weight, stretch. Not only
does it lower the chances of you
pulling a muscle and hurting
yourself, but it will also serve
as a quick break.
Step 4: Hit the weight room
Once you’ve broken a sweat
and have your heart rate up,
you can finally hit the weights.
Before you start lifting, decide
what part of your body you
would like to work out. Don’t
sporadically change between
your arms, legs, back and chest.
The more detailed and specific
your plan is, the more effective
your workout will be. During
your workout, remember to
give yourself enough time to
rest between sets and make sure
to stay hydrated. A common
myth about lifting is that you
should lift as much weight as
you can, but doing more repeti-
tions with less weights is more
effective.
Step 5: Cool down
So you’re done your workout,
you are all tired and sweaty and
all you want to do is sit on your
couch and chug a bottle of
Gatorade. Don’t. Resist the urge
to stop by jogging on the tread-
mill for a few more minutes.
Follow that up with a few quick
stretches and you can hit the
showers knowing that you
won’t feel nearly as sore as you
would have otherwise.
Step 6: Drink chocolate milk
It rebuilds muscle and tastes
great. Enough said.

U of A bids farewell to a facility that has housed its sports teams for
over 50 years

EDMONTON (CUP) — Sitting court-
side at every basketball game in the
University of Alberta’s main gym since
1975, Ben and Pauline Janz have be-
come iconic inside a venue that’s wit-
nessed a tradition of athletic
excellence.
The Janz family has been a stead-
fast presence inside the gym for more
than 35 years, with seats reserved for
them with a direct view of the Pandas
bench. The couple has fostered the
growth of basketball at the U of A
through the Adopt-an-Athlete pro-
gram, where community members
provide financial support to athletes
on campus.
It is a tradition that will be contin-
uing at a new venue, as the gym will
close its doors to varsity athletics at
the end of this season, giving way to a
more modern centre on at the U of A.
The Janz family recognizes that
they’re only a small part of the success
of the program. It’s the gym that has
provided the atmosphere that spurs
on the success of all the Pandas and
Bears athletes.
“I’m kind of sorry to see the end of
an era. We’ve seen a lot of good basket-
ball games here,” Ben quietly ex-
plained prior to the Pandas tip-off for
their last regular season game. “It’s
about our allegiance to the players and

“We just know so many of the
players now. It’s been really fun to
come here,” Pauline added. “I just
hope the Pandas win tonight.”
The U of A first broke ground on
the historic venue in 1958 and opened
the facility for use in 1960. Known as
the Varsity Gym at the time, this hub
of campus was built for a capacity of
2,714 people and featured hardwood
floors measuring 108-by-168 feet,
which were considered state-of-the-art
at the time.
While its main purpose has been
for athletics, it has also been used for
day-to-day activity classes, intramu-
ral and recreational events, final ex-
ams, and even a break dancing
competition in the early ’80s. The gym
has also played host to a number of
outside events: Olympic wrestling tri-
als in 1968, the 1978 Commonwealth
Games, and even the debut of the U of
A’s beloved mascot Guba, who was
first introduced at a men’s basketball
game in 1971.
With a rich history, the school’s
varsity legends have fond memories of
the facility.
“My first experience would have
been in the early ’70s. I played in the
annual junior-high Bears and Pandas
volleyball tournament. In 1973, I
played in that tournament as a young
junior-high kid of 5-foot-1,” Bears vol-
leyball coach Terry Danyluk said, re-
flecting on his young experiences in
the facility. “At that time, it was a big

gym and it was still new. It was a really
exciting environment to be on the cam-
pus and to be in that facility.”
Arriving on campus as a freshman
student athlete in 1979 from Tofield,
Alta., the bright-eyed teenager began
to make his footprints on the history of
the gym. Danyluk would go on to
coach the Green and Gold squad that
he looked up to so much as an aspiring
volleyball youngster.
“It’s become a lot more comfort-
able,” Danyluk explained. “The main
gym feels like a home. It’s some place
where you can feel entrenched and it’s
somewhere that I feel comfortable
coming to every day.”
Over the course of his 23-year
tenure with the Bears volleyball team,
Danyluk has claimed 507 wins as both
an athlete and a coach. Even more
amazing are his four national champi-
onship banners. These are gifts that
he’s proud to offer the gym in return
for the support it’s given him over his
lifetime.
“I refer to [the gym] as a corner-
stone in Edmonton,” Danyluk ex-
plained. "It’s had so many different
experiences: from the students who
take classes in it, to the thousands of
students that take final exams in there,
to the student athletes and all the inter-
national events that have happened in
there.”
Former Bears basketball head
coach Don Horwood remembers the
facility as an iconic structure dedicated
to fostering the growth and develop-
ment of not only the athletes who he
coached, but also the community that
surrounds it.
Horwood became coach of Bears
basketball in 1983 and was an anchor
for the team behind the bench for 26
years before retiring in 2009. During
his career as head coach, he led the
team to 11 CIS championship appear-
ances, winning the national title three
times, including the team’s ?rst CIS
championship in the 1993-94 season.
“When we started, it was just a
few families and friends at our home
games,” Horwood reflected. “As a
head coach, I was very nervous. This
was my job now. There were a lot of
nerves and a lot of anticipation. I
wanted to build towards a national
championship and set the wheels in
motion to create a winning attitude
that would not accept second-rate ef-
fort or behaviour.”
Trix Baker also spoke about the
warmth of the facility and its unique
place in CIS competition. For the
player-turned-coach-turned-athletics-
administrator, the gym has been a ma-
jor part of her experience at the U of A.
Having played on the Pandas basket-
ball squad from 1976–81 and coaching
the team from 1991–2006, the dynamic
Baker now oversees a number of the
Green and Gold varsity teams that
have made the gym their home.
“The gym is always warm. That
may sound insignificant to some peo-
ple, but when I was coaching, I froze in
every other gym I went to. Here, it
doesn’t matter if it’s 40 degrees below,
that gym is always warm,” Baker ex-
plained.
“I’m sure it’s because of the actual
temperature in the gym, but it has a
warmness to it. It’s comfortable to sit
in and it doesn’t get so loud. We have
a lot of people who have supported
the teams for a lot of years.
A legacy of winning has been cre-
ated in the gym since its doors opened
51 years ago. It’s a tradition that has
lasted years and brought 40 national
championship banners to hang
proudly from its walls. But it’s also a
tradition that has carried on through
the years for the Baker family.
Baker’s husband Doug played on
the Golden Bears basketball team, and
her son Jordan currently plays for the
men’s squad, attempting to create a
whole new set of legacies.
“I remember in games turning
around looking for my clipboard to
draw a play and [Jordan’s] stolen it –
he’s got it behind the bench and he’s
drawing these plays at four or ?ve
[years old],” Baker reminisced. “One

time, he wasn’t feeling well and he
wanted to sit on my lap during a game
and I said, ‘No, no you can’t.’ So I got
up and he just stood there and put his
head on where I was sitting, put it
down and went to sleep in the middle
of a game.
“My alumni used to say to me,
‘Oh yeah, we’re going to call social
services,’ but he was just so comfort-
able in the gym. He used to go to sleep
to bouncing balls. He was there in
practice. I’d go pick him up at the day-
care, pack him a lunch and he’d come
and eat and play during the games or
the practices.”
Jordan played a big part in the
farewell for the gym on Feb. 12 as he
helped lead the Golden Bears to vic-
tory in their ?nal regular season game
on the home court.
“It was a great send-off. It was just
a really ?tting way to end our league
games in the main gym with a couple
victories,” Jordan said after the game.
With the move to the new centre, the
time has come to leave behind the
warm recollections and ghosts of vic-
tories past that have emanated from
the gym over the years for competi-
tors, coaches and spectators alike.
Next year, fans will enter the mas-
sive new 230,000-square-foot Go
Center filled with nine basketball
courts, nine volleyball courts, and a
dedicated varsity court for new mem-
ories to be created and new CIS ban-
ners to be lifted into its towering
rafters.
While Horwood has experienced
great triumphs as a coach in the main
gym, he recognizes that the new loca-
tion for the Golden Bears represents a
fresh era for this up-and-coming team,
as they continue to turn around from
their lapses in recent years in the hopes
of regaining the winning tradition that
they once held in the gym.
“The payoff of all the success is
saying goodbye to the main gym.
We’ve made plenty of friends here and
they have plenty to look forward to.”

It’s the happiest time of year
The government has fallen! It’s spring
election time!
I know I sound excited, and I am.
Despite everyone else seeming to be
exhausted by elections (four in the last
seven years) I love seeing the politi-
cians out there pleading their case, try-
ing to convince me why they are the
best person for the position of Prime
Minister (or why their opponents are
the worst persons). Even better is
watching politicians awkwardly parry
questions by reporters.
That’s right; Canada is heading
back to the polls on May 2. Although a
lot of people claim there was no clear
reason to call an election, the Harper
government was found in contempt of
Parliament – the first government in
Canadian history to do so, over the is-
sue of lying about new fighter jet ex-
penses. Even if the contempt ruling
had not been made, all opposition par-
ties opposed the new Conservative
budget, which likely would’ve brought
down the government anyway.
Although the first polls indicate
Canada will get anything from a re-
turn to the status quo to a Conservative
majority, out of the gate both the
Liberals and the NDP look good. In
fact, I am awarding the first election
zinger to Michael Ignatieff for saying
“The person who’s got a problem with
a coalition is Stephen Harper. He’s got
to explain what he was doing in
Toronto hotel rooms with Jack and
Gilles,” an obvious reference to both
the Harper coalition discussions of
2004 and the popular children’s nurs-
ery rhyme.
However, Ignatieff also gets the
lamest remark to this point in the elec-
tion by claiming he is running in the
election because he loves democracy.
What an utterly obvious statement for
someone campaigning for office to
make. Perhaps Stephen Harper, if con-
fronted, would admit that he hates
democracy? That seems very, very un-
likely.
Jack Layton is looking good as
well. He’s campaigning all over the
country and perhaps he will win some
more seats this time, even though it
seems the NDP cannot break the “40
seat barrier”. Unfortunately, it is kind
of painful to see Layton running to be
Prime Minister. Sure, it’s acceptable to
aim high in a federal election, but set-
ting a more reasonable goal – like per-
haps becoming the official opposition –
would be more realistic than having
Layton as Prime Minister.
Harper, on the other hand, is under
attack for being a hypocrite on the
coalition issue. In 2004, when Harper
was leader of the official opposition,
he sent a letter to the Governor General
telling her to “keep all options open”
when considering the minority gov-
ernment of Paul Martin. Keeping all
options open is generally assumed to
mean an NDP-Bloc-Conservative coali-
tion, something which Harper denies
but which Layton and Gilles Duceppe
affirm. It seems for the Conservatives it
was tolerable to work with separatists
in 2004, but it isn’t in 2011.
Further, it seems like Harper is
promising that if Ignatieff is elected
Canada will descend into chaos and
horrors overnight, with a madman at
the wheel steering the country straight
into the abyss. Harper says Canada is
an island of stability, and cites the tur-
moil in the Middle East, the European
debt crisis, and “Disaster in the Pacific”
as reasons why we are so stable and
safe – as if electing a Liberal govern-
ment will cause the Earth itself to split
in two and swallow Vancouver.
However the rest of the election
goes (and I am sure there will be some
faux pas yet to come) I cannot wait for
Election Day. I hope everyone else is
just as excited for the election and that
everyone will vote, even if they ruin
their ballot to make a point that they
hate all the candidates. This is our
democracy, and as annoying as it might
be, there are people around the world
fighting and dying to get what we
have. We should honour their efforts
by exercising our right to vote when
we have the opportunity.

There are still
bunnies out there
As dead as the winter (and spring
in Saskatchewan) can be, there is
always something nice living on
campus.
Cute little bunny rabbits! The
campus of the University of Regina
is home to a number of rabbits that
like to hop around and generally
make this university a more de-
lightful place to study. The pres-
ence of bunnies on campus is a
small thing. It’s something people
might not appreciate that much,
but occasionally it’s nice to reflect
on the rabbits and just enjoy their
innocence.
Who doesn’t like to be sitting
on the green and see some bunnies
hopping around, nibbling on a
shoot of grass? Who doesn’t stop
and say “aww” when they are
walking outside in the bitter winter
cold and a pure white rabbit leaps
across their path? Who hasn’t
named at least one rabbit that they
see on a regular basis? My
favourite rabbit is named Reginald
and he lives somewhere between
the Kinesiology Building and
Campion College.
The rabbits also live in the
fields around campus and like to
hop across the road quite often, so
it’s important to watch out for
them. There’s nothing worse than
seeing a bunny rabbit run over and
killed. I’m always especially care-
ful on the curve in the road nearest
to the Kinesiology Building. That
seems to be the place where they
hang out the most.
Of course, bunny rabbits do
have their problems. They burrow
holes in athletic fields, which are of
great danger to athletes who might
seriously hurt themselves if they
step in a hole. They also could po-
tentially harm the structure of
buildings by burrowing under
them. Finally, although very cute,
the rabbits are indeed wild animals
and can pass diseases to humans.
Their bites can give tetanus to the
unfortunate rabbit admirer.
In fact, at the University of
Victoria, the authorities have had
to resort to culling bunny rabbits
(originally abandoned by their
owners on campus) at night so that
students did not disrupt the work
of animal control agents. Further,
they have designated the campus a
rabbit-free zone and are humanely
trapping and killing the nearly 900
rabbits that were on campus.
Although the university looked at
other options, this was deemed
necessary for the safety of students.
So even though the bunny rab-
bits here are cute and I’ve already
named one Reginald, it’s best to
keep your distance and not feed
them. As much as they add an air
of adorability to campus, they are
still wild animals and should be
treated as such.
Following an intense students’
union election, a winter that just
doesn’t want to end, and all the
chaos in the world, it’s nice to be
able to look outside and see that
rabbits are still cute and we can en-
joy their company. That is, at least
until we start receiving reports of
Rabbit Flu.

Where has the niceness gone?

I came to a stark and depressing real-
ization today. The word “nice” no
longer exists in our dictionaries. Well,
literally it’s still there under N in the
dictionary. But nice has seized to exist
in this day and age. You don’t believe
me? That’s fine, but first tell me, when
was the last time a complete stranger
complimented you?
Whatever happened to giving
high-fives to random people on the
street, or smiling at the people walking
by? What happened to tossing out
compliments to the person sitting next
to you, telling them how great their
hair looks, how you love their shoes,
or how beautifully their eyes shine?
What happened to being nice?
While I was in this depressed
state, wondering what had happened
to the world’s supply of kindness, I
stumbled upon a video on YouTube
that has become my number one
favourite: “Validation” by Kurt
Kuenne. The short film’s main focus is
that the smallest compliment can
change a frown upside-down. So, I’ve
decided to give it a try.
You. Yes, you that’s reading this
right now. You are amazing. You are so
amazing, in fact, that you can do any-
thing. You are successful, and happy,
and brilliant. Why are you looking
around? Don’t look around; don’t
doubt yourself. I am talking to you!
What’s that I hear? You don't be-
lieve what I am saying? You doubt that
you are that amazing? You aren’t suc-
cessful or happy? No, no, no. Now you
are just trying to be modest, aren’t
you? But, believe me, what I say, and
what I am about to say, is true. Period.
You are great. Look at how much
you’ve accomplished already. Every
day, you tackle the challenges of life,
and every day, you battle with any ob-
stacles that come in your way. Every
day, you are successful in doing both.
Life is not easy, it’s a battlefield, and
you are the solider, fighting off all the
enemies. How can you not think you
are great?
You go to school, and you have to
endure countless hours of education
pouring into your brain. You have to
tackle algebra, old English, and learn
the history of the planet. Then, you
have exams and tests and assignments
to write and hand in. There are proj-
ects, and presentations, and readings.
It’s a whole load of work. But you do
it every day, and you do it brilliantly.
And yes, no matter what every-
one else says, I am telling you right
now: you look great. Actually, you
look better than great. And that smile
– is it ever amazing. You really should
show it much more often. You really
must share it with everyone else.
The world is at your fingertips,
and don’t you ever let anyone else tell
you otherwise.
Let’s continue to pass on compli-
ments – send them to the people you
know, to the people you love, and to
random people you’ve never met be-
fore. Go and watch “Validation”, and
as the screen darkens at the end of the
clip, look at your face in the computer
screen. Are you smiling?
Let’s try to make a more positive
environment – your compliment may
be the thing that a stranger needs in
their day. And one day, when you are
feeling hopeless and depressed, maybe
a compliment will come flying your
way and make you smile.
