identification requirements
We are required to verify your identity. As a result you will be asked n EEA or Switzerland national identity card;
to provide the following evidence (a copy of which will be retained for
our records) from either Option A or B when opening an account.
n Firearms certificate or shotgun licence;
n Northern Ireland voters card; or
If you are applying in a branch you must provide original identification
(a copy of which will be taken and retained in our records). n UK national ID card.

If you cannot supply any of the items below, we may still be able to
help. Please call into a branch or contact us on 0845 765 4321 for
further advice.
Occasionally, to comply with HM Treasury sanctions and guidelines
from the Financial Action Task Force on money laundering, there may
be additional checks and documents required if you are a national of a
certain country.
Option A
For each customer applying at a branch please provide one
of the following items:
n Unexpired passport;
n Unexpired UK/EEA or Switzerland photocard driving licence (where
both the date of the licence on the reverse and photograph date
on the front must be in date);
Option B
For each customer applying by telephone, post or internet and for
any customer applying at a branch who cannot provide an item from
Option A:
n Existing Customer – please provide an item from List 1.
n New Customer – please provide an item from List 1 plus a separate
item from List 2. Please note items from the same source cannot be
used twice.
If you are applying by telephone, post or internet do not send
originals; please provide unaltered black and white photocopies of
identification. This must include photocopies of pages that contain the
following – photographs, reference details, transactions and current
UK entry/residence visas. Please also note that certified copies are not
required. DO NOT SEND ORIGINALS.

List 1 n Notification of one of the following entitlements to:

n Unexpired: – State/local authority benefit*
– Passport – Tax credit*
– UK old-style driving licence (not provisional) – Pension from the DWP*
– UK/EEA or Switzerland photocard driving licence – Educational loan/grant*
(date of photo and licence must not have expired). – Other government/local authority grant*.
n EEA or Switzerland national identity card.
n HMRC (Inland Revenue) coding/assessment/
statement/tax credit*.
n Firearms certificate or shotgun licence.
n Birth certificate (under 18s only).
n Northern Ireland voters card.
n NHS medical card (under 18s only).
n UK national ID card.
n Adoption certificate (under 18s only).
n Young persons PASS card (under 18s only).

List 2 n Bank statement (not internet printed)**.

n Unexpired: n Credit card statement (not internet printed)**.
– Passport n UCAS letter (students only)*.
– UK old-style driving licence (not provisional)
– UK/EEA or Switzerland photocard driving licence
n Local council rent card or tenancy agreement*.
(date of photo and licence must not have expired). n HMRC (Inland Revenue) correspondence including name, address
n EEA or Switzerland national identity card. and permanent NI number*.
n Firearms certificate or shotgun licence.
n Pension/benefit correspondence from the DWP*.
n Northern Ireland voters card.
n Utility bill (not mobile phone, satellite/cable TV or
internet printed bills)**.
n UK national ID card.
n Birth certificate (under 18s only).
n Council tax bill/demand letter*.
n NHS medical card (under 18s only).
n Notification of one of the following entitlements to:
– State/local authority benefit*
n Adoption certificate (under 18s only).
– Tax credit* n Young persons PASS card (under 18s only).
– Pension from the DWP* n Confirmation from your work/school/college/university/care
– Educational loan/grant* institution confirming your name, address and details of
