HOW DID YOU GO ABOUT IDENTIFYING
THIS PROBLEM?
 Padare discovered through research that most of

the Care facilitators working in the communities are


women and girls and there is a gap in male
involvement.
 Through Padare’s implementation strategy it was
discovered that to achieve gender justice there has to
be a deliberate engagement of men in sharing the
burden of care work with women and girls.
 When MEN started participating in community
gender dialogues by challenging harmful cultural and
religious practices that further suppress women and
girls.

IS THIS ISSUE IMPORTANT?

 Yes it is important because the burden of care

work is traditionally assigned to women and girls in


most households and communities. Men prioritize
income-paying jobs in contrast to care- work which
is viewed as women’s work’.
 It is important because it brings the need of equal
gender participation in Care work.
 Yes it is important to involve male care facilitators
as it is a direct way of challenging gender
stereotyping

HOW ARE YOU GOING ABOUT ADDRESSING
THI S PROBLEM?

 Identifying ordinary men in communities that are willing to be


transformational leaders.
 Training of male caregivers as a response to the community
need of male participation
 Helping men to understand gender equality and equity
principles through gender training that enables men to deal
with misconceptions that equality.
 By approaching men as facilitators of change in their
communities as compared to oppressors that always violate
women through involving men in community dialogues on
gender HIV & AIDS activities and women’s empowerment
issues.

WHAT IS THE TIME-FRAME FOR THE
PROJECT?
 This pilot project was implemented in three years

 First year was, research, membership mobilization and training


of 100 male care facilitators taking care of 1000 households
 Between first and second year 100 households were receiving
cash transfers & food supplements, 700 households receiving
community home based care,300 households on treatment
vouchers.
 Third year was more on economic drive with 200 household
with low input gardens for nutritional value and 5 groups doing
market gardening , 20 groups of Income savings and Lending
and 15 groups with functional Income generating
programmes,

RESOURCEFULNESS: WHAT FINANCIAL,
HUMAN AND OTHER RESOURCES WERE
MOBILISED?
 There was money needed for cash transfers for 100

households for the first two years of the project.


 Corn soy Blend was distributed to 100 families every
month for two years
 Garden tools, seeds, technical people to train
people on house holds gardens, Income generating
programmes, Income saving and lending activities,
Project proposals, and human resources as care
facilitations

MONITORING AND EVALUATION

 Padare use planning and review meetings, interviews,

workshop pre and post-test evaluations, focus group


discussions and surveys to monitor and evaluate progress
made.
 Activities and programme reports are done Weekly, Monthly,
quarterly, half yearly and annually
 Registration forms, commitment forms and membership forms
are also be used to track growth in membership in comparison
to the numbers reached
 All the programmes activities are captured in a database that
also produces monthly performance reports.

WHAT RESULTS HAVE BEEN ACHIEVED?

Most clients that were bedridden in the

beginning of the programme are now


working for themselves.
People who used to live under a US$ per day
are now affording at least two meals per day
Managed to mobilize and train more than
150 male care facilitators.
Now in the process of documenting
significant change stories

All these activities can be introduced as the
programmes is starting so that a culture or
saving and making more income out of the
little people have can be created.

 This programme is self sustaining as it is a

 People manage there own resources and businesses
 This programme can be replicated to the whole
nation as it also empower the less privileged by
providing income to the unemployed

LESSONS LEARNED
 Men respond well when space is provided where men are
free to explore their fears and anxieties about gender equality
PROJECTS: RESPONSE

and HIV & AIDS. This is key in identifying misconceptions


among men on gender equality.
 Men brings transformation by challenging harmful cultural
practices that hinder men from embracing gender equality and
promoting cultural values and HIV & AIDS responses that
recognise all people as deserving equal dignity because they
are human.
 There is need to conduct consistent research on knowledge,
attitudes and beliefs that perpetuate harmful negative
masculinities among men.
