us the moniker “The People of
the Book.” Of all our books and traditions, however, the finest example

of pedagogy is found here in the Haggada and in the Seder which takes
place not in our seminaries and houses of study, but at home. This is not
ot

coincidental and underscores the educational partnership which must

exist between our schools and our homes, between faculty and family.
A thoughtful application of pedagogic principles is woven into the
script of the Haggada. The Seder is a stage set for an evening filled with
Experiential Learning. Quoting the Talmud, the Haggada teaches us:
‫“ בכל דור ודור חייב אדם לראות את עצמו כאילו הוא יצא ממצרים‬In every
generation a person is obligated to see himself or herself as if he or
she personally went out of Egypt.” The Seder is not to be a history
lesson from a book, but rather, a reflection of personal experience. The
Haggada of Maimonides complements this idea by suggesting that
not only do the Seder participants need to see themselves as going

COMMENTARY
THE FOUR CHILDREN

T he Haggada introduces
the description of the Four
Children with the poetic “Baruch
Hamakom”:

the simple one, and the one who doesn’t have the capacity to inquire.
The Haggada notes the differences in learning abilities and lifestyles

between the various types of children and nevertheless each one is

entitled to a “baruch”, a bracha—a blessing. The word baruch is used

with each of the children, telling us that we must differentiate in our


teaching methods to accommodate children of all backgrounds and
abilities. Each type of child has merit in the eyes of Hashem and is
worthy of blessing. It is written in the Book of Proverbs:
‫“—חנך לנער על פי דרכו‬Teach a child according to his/her way.”
We strive to live up to this motto on a regular basis, to individualize
instruction in order to fulfill this great lesson.

There are those who explain that the Cup of Elijah
set on our tables to honor this great prophet who
visits our Passover Seder finds its origins in this
fifth verse. Elijah the Prophet will herald in the
ultimate redemption, a time when we will once
again live in peace in our land, and thus the Cup

Yet it seems that many of the rabbis actually drank a fifth cup on the
Seder night, and throughout Jewish history there have been those who
have added a fifth cup to their Seder ritual.
