2 SCOPE OF SUPPLY

2.1 Simulator Scope of Supply

The specified scope of supply is for a pipeline simulator that can conduct steady state and
transient studies for liquid and / or gas pipelines and networks. Simulation Software Limited
proposes to supply their fluid dynamics simulator – VariSim TM for this requirement.

2.2 The VariSim TM Product – Key Features

VariSim TM is a new suite of software applications developed by Simulation Software Limited

(SSL) with a pipeline simulator at its core. For more than 40 years, Hydraulic Analysis Ltd
(SSL’s parent company) has developed and customized the simulation program for the flow of
water, oils, petrochemicals and gases in pipelines and piping systems. It has been used on
both rapid events (burst disc etc.) and slow operations (start up, line-pack etc.) and recent
verifications have shown it to be accurate to within 1% and 2% on pressure variations. Today,
the principals developed over the last 40 years have been taken and re-written to provide one
of the most up to date and accurate simulators on the market.

VariSim TM facilitates the building and running of pipeline simulation models. The models
created with the software can be used for plant design, optimisation and operator training.
The simulator is one that precisely predicts pressure and flow profiles when the system is
operating steadily and when operating upsets occur by solving through numerical analysis the
equations of continuity, momentum and energy. This means that the model accounts for
steady and transient conditions and changes in flow regime. The simulator does not
accommodate choked flow and does not place a restriction on the velocity range that can be
calculated.

The simulator is configured with the following information such that it closely reflects the
behaviour of the pipeline, its equipment and control scheme.

• Site layout and equipment locations

• Pipeline profiles and characteristics
• All equipment characteristics
• Controller and logic characteristics
• Fluid Properties
• Operating Flows and Pressures

The simulator has the following capabilities

• It is capable of modelling any system operation that can affect the dynamic
reaction of the fluid within a pipeline (with the exception of two phase flow
development). ‘Quasi’ two phase flow is accommodated in liquids pipelines where
air is drawn into pipelines and where a gas volume (a vapour pocket) is
determined to have been drawn from liquids. The approach assumes a
perpendicular water / air interface and adjusts the wavespeed accordingly.
• It can fully simulate the complete interaction between the pipeline, the equipment,
the control logic, the telemetry and storage facilities.
• It can be used for steady state and complex ‘What If’ transient studies.
• It is capable of modelling any single fluid.

S11003QUO01r0.doc Page 6 of 12
VARISIM PIPELINE SIMULATOR (GAS and LIQUID)

• It is capable of modelling plant, pipelines and control logic including PID

controllers
• It has graphical configuration and intuitive graphical output with copy, paste, drag
and drop capability.
• It can continually provide trends and profiles of any data for any, easily definable
location or route.
• It can be used for equipment sizing and tuning of control parameters
• It can be operated interactively as the simulation progresses (open / close valves,
start / stop pumps / compressors, change set-points, change PID characteristics
etc) or it can be initiated through a scenario / script editor from which pre-defined
actions control the simulation.
• Time series can be used to define variations in boundary flows / pressures if
required.
• Point and ‘out of balance’ loads can be calculated at any location on the system.
• It can import configuration data from some other simulation packages – such as
EPANET. The import process first converts the ‘other’ simulator format into a
VariSim TM database format which can then be opened by VariSim TM
• VariSim TM uses a configuration database in which all of the configuration data is
held. Data can be viewed and exported as required during a simulation (e.g. profile
data or individual trends), or the simulation can be allowed to proceed to
completion at the end of which a results file will be generated. This results file can
be interrogated using a report generator which can also support export of data into
other formats such as excel. It is up to the user to manage the ‘housekeeping’ of
the files generated.
• As a future option, there is seamless connection to the online environment.

The output of the any analysis is a complete report of any aspect that the user wishes to
consider including flows, pressures, inventory, energy, equipment operating characteristics
etc. It also includes a complete alarm and events report and an envelope showing the
maximum / minimum pressures generated at all locations on the system.

The VariSim TM software is effectively unlimited i.e. there is no software constraint placed on
the number of items that can be simulated. To SSL’s knowledge, the maximum number of
items included to date has been approximately 2000. However, it should be recognised that
the more complex a simulation model, the longer it will take to compute and the more output
that is required from a simulation, the larger the results files will be. Results files are unlikely
to cause disc memory issues especially if compressed.

For a full product description please see the VariSim TM product description documentation.
