Presenter:    Leo  Cook,  Advanced  Clinical  Coordinator,  MEDITECH
Organization:    MEDITECH
Scheduled:    Friday  June  3  at  3:30  pm

This  session  will  feature  a  demonstration  of  the  clinically  relevant  software  components  for  physicians  in
MAGIC  5.6.4.  It  will  focus  on  enhancing  the  physician  workflow  by  streamlining  workload  with  the
Physician  Desktop  and  rounding  list.  The  session  will  also  cover:  reviewing  patient  data  within  the  chart
utilizing  special  panels  &  the  problem  list,  managing  patient  care  with  physician  documentation,  and
enhancing  patient  safety  utilizing  evidence-‐based  ordering  (CPOE),  clinical  decision  support,  and  the
discharge  process.

As  an  undergraduate  at  the  University  of  Massachusetts  at  Amherst,  Leo  Cook  completed  a  Bachelor  of
Arts  program  in  Legal  Studies.  After  graduation  he  began  work  at  Umass  Memorial  Hospital  in
Worcester,  Massachusetts,  in  the  patient  access  department.  It  was  there  that  he  became  interested  in
the  software  that  was  being  used  by  the  admitting  office  and  the  emergency  room,  and  soon  found
himself  applying  to  work  at  MEDITECH  in  the  fall  of  2004.

Leo  started  at  MEDITECH  as  a  pharmacy  service  specialist,  and  quickly  became  a  strong  resource  for  his
group.  He  trained  hospitals  on  the  implementation  of  BMV,  MEDITECH's  bedside  medication  scanning
product,  and  took  every  opportunity  he  could  to  get  out  on  site,  traveling  to  hospitals  throughout  the
United  States  and  Canada  and  developing  an  understanding  for  the  workflow  and  operation  of  inpatient
pharmacies.

In  2007  Leo  joined  a  new  initiative  called  the  advanced  clinicals  group,  and  was  tasked  with  supporting
the  roll  out  and  optimization  of  MEDITECH's  advanced  clinical  products.  Over  the  last  three  years  Leo  has
been  involved  in  the  assessment,  planning,  roll-‐out,  and  support  of  physician  products  for  several
hospitals  and  hospital  networks  supported  by  MEDITECH's  client  services  division.  He  has  also  supported
the  marketing  division  in  similar  projects,  and  most  recently  has  done  extensive  work  developing
materials  to  support  hospitals  in  the  United  States  as  they  look  to  meet  Meaningful  Use  measures  and
qualify  for  funding  under  ARRA.
