D.T. Niles, the great minister, ecumenical leader and hymn writer of Sri Lanka and India, once
wrote that “Chrisanity is one beggar telling another beggar where he found bread.” Sharing
who we are during the Lenten season – and in life as a whole – reflects this spirit. It is not that
we are beer than those around us or have more insight; it is the sharing of something we have
learned or experienced, something that keeps us going. We tell others what feeds us, nourishes
us and gives us strength. We share what we are and have, and also share with others in seeking
more.
Giving and receiving – this is what human life is all about. The more we give, the more we
LENTEN MEDITATION
receive. The more we receive, the more we have to give. As a number of people have said, “You
cannot be human alone.”
Oen, we see sharing only as giving. We tell children to share their toys and they may be
reluctant, even though they are surrounded by more than they can possibly play with at one
me. Sharing is seeing life as a two-way street. As we grow older, we learn that our own giving
may be matched by someone else, so that both have gained something new. We may even
discover ways of sharing the same gi and seeing new possibilies.
Being truly open to others, even at the risk of being vulnerable, enables us to get to know
them on a deeper level. Shared needs oen find soluons we cannot find alone. Shared joys
become greater. This two-way street of sharing reflects Jesus’ readiness to share his experience
of what God’s love is all about. It recalls the disciples’ willingness to give up their regular jobs
and rounes and become part of something greater.
Sharing is being fully alive, giving of ourselves and receiving from others. Whether we are
wealthy, or poor beggars, we have something to give and something to gain.
“Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil and aer fasng forty days and
forty nights, he was hungry. And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these
stones to become loaves of bread.” Mahew 4:1-3
Fasng has been used throughout the ages to prepare the people of God for the great things God has in store
for them. As we pray through this season of transion and Divine imaginaon, I am calling, I am asking, I am
requesng that the enre church become involved in some form of prayer and fasng. The following are several
types of fasts that can be used to develop spiritual power and clarity.
Fast #2 – The Daniel Fast (Taken from the book of Daniel). When Daniel was captured by the Babylonians, he
asked of the Babylonians if he, along with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, could fast, eang only fruits and
vegetables so they would be prepared to confront the Babylonian king.
March 9 – March 19 Eat all meals before 6:00 p.m.

Please consult your doctor before proceeding with fasng. If you take medicaon or have any parcular ailment, it

“Well done my good and faithful servant. Since you have been proved trustworthy in a
small way, I will now put you in charge of something big.” Mahew 25:5
A steward is a person who manages the affairs and assets of another. Joseph, as
Pophar’s steward (Genesis 39:1-6), was the manager of Pharoah’s business affairs.
Likewise, God has entrusted the world and all it contains to us. We are responsible as
good managers, for the manner in which we use what God has placed in our hands. A
well-managed team may not finish first, but there is real sasfacon in knowing that as a
manager, one has done his or her best to develop and use the talents of all the players to
STEWARDSHIP
the best advantage of the team.
Stewardship is being a good manager of our God-given talents. Like the man in the
parable, we can buy our talents and not use them, only to discover that we have had
them, or we can invest them in a life of service and see them mulply over and over
again. What are our talents? Our me, our abilies, our whole life! Stewardship is using
all of these things to our best advantage and to the best advantage of others…all for the
honor and glory of God from whom they came.
