Nelson Mandela was a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary and politician who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He was the country's first black head of state and the first elected in a fully representative democratic election. Mandela previously spent 27 years in prison for his activism against apartheid and racial segregation. After his release, he negotiated an end to apartheid and oversaw the establishment of multiracial democracy. He received numerous honors for his leadership and community reconciliation efforts, including the Nobel Peace Prize.
